91st Annual Academy Awards

Black Panther's inclusion smacks of ratings-grab, because if it was a serious contender, it would get a Best Film Editing nod. So it doesn't, so... technical wins are best-case scenario.

Roma getting both Best Picture and Best Foreign Film noms makes me think it'll avoid major wins.

My predictions:

Best Picture - A Star is Born (possible upset by "Green Book")
Best Director - Spike Lee
Best Actress - Lady Gaga
Best Actor - Rami Malek
Best Supporting Actress - Marina de Tavira
Best Supporting Actor - Sam Elliott
Best Original Screenplay - The Favourite
Best Adapted Screenplay - A Star is Born
Best Makeup - Mary, Queen of Scots
Best Costume Design - Black Panther
Best Cinematography - Cold War
Best Song - "Shallow"
Best Original Score - Black Panther
Best Documentary Feature - RBG
Best Animated Film - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Best Foreign Language Film - Cold War
Best Sound Mixing/Sound Editing/Production Design - Black Panther
Best Visual Effects - Avengers: Infinity War
Best Film Editing - Bohemian Rhapsody

Titanic is great and the people still harping on it’s quality haven’t seen it in a long while.

My ex used to make me watch and listen to the sound of his own voice giving commentary (he’s a huge Titanic history buff).

I'm shocked ASIB didn't manage to be a bigger event and slay nominations. It's a romance, it has fantastic songs, it stars famous people and it's a genuinely well done movie

Agreed. That movie has a wonderful film score, wonderful production design, and it's well-written. It's a movie that if I start watching it, I get absorbed into it. That was a great year for films, though. The BP category was STACKED.

That was just it for me though, I didn’t care about the characters and thought their love story was meh.

The visuals are epic and the depiction of the sinking is great, but the main story is prosaic, IMO.

Nice to see Willem Dafoe getting another nom (first as Best Actor), even if he hasn't got a chance of winning this year.

Outside of that, I'm only rooting for Glenn Close and Christian Bale... not too fussed about the other nominees

From a technical standpoint Titanic is a great movie. I just find the dialogue and cartoon cutouts of characters to be laughable. I’m surprised they didn’t give Zane a mustache to twirl.

Cameron’s kind of always dealt in some caricatures. Remember Avatar’s insanely gung-ho Colonel evilly sipping his coffee while blowing up Hometree? He might as well have been twirling his mustache.

Is Melissa McCarthy any good in Can You Ever Forgive Me? I heard she was

She was ok. She falls into that Kristin Wiig and Steve Carell school of dramatic acting where comedic actors think taking on a depressed role means they are serious now.

She was just fine. I wouldn't say she was Oscar worthy at all, but I didn't feel she was Oscar worthy for Bridesmaids either.

For me personally, I'm happy Infinity War is in Visual and Spider-Verse in animated, very happy with all of Black Panther's nominations too.

Cooper missing Best Director is hilarious

Roma is vastly overhyped.

Crazy Rich Asians not being in Best Costumes is awful.

How is this Spike Lee's first directing nomination?

Because years ago, they didn't Do the Right Thing :o

Just realized I haven't seen a ton of movies this year. But I'm hoping Isle of Dogs wins best score.

It’s her best role since St Vincent. I can’t stand her comedy (although it worked well in ‘Spy’)), but I like her as a dramatic actress.

She has an every person quality about her that works well in those roles.
