Yeah, they were.

The "War Over Will Black Panther Be Nominated Best Picture?"

Starts on this page:

91st Annual Academy Awards

And goes to page 13. So much back and forth over this one being those who knew it would and those who swore up and down that it wouldn't be.

Hate to gloat and for others who knew back then as well, but - don't really hate to.

That final speech from The Dark Knight rings so true today, and why the rest of the comicbook flicks can now be nominated for an academy award best picture. DK went through first and had to be sacrificed in order for the rest to enjoy the awards now. lol

I'm glad BP was nominated, but it shouldn't of been the first, which is why it gets so much hate now. Eh. I'm glad for both of those mexican actresses from Roma, I'm glad Olivia Colman got her nom, happy for Spiderman animated flick.

Cold War never played anywhere near me. Goddamn.

Panther with a BP nomination, what a complete joke. More pandering.

Let's discuss the Academy Awards, not other users you have a problem with. Also if you have an issue with a staff member, I'd recommend taking it up with another staffer or an administrator, rather than making coy nameless references.

Nah, don't see it as a joke. But it just adds more hate from folks when you are THE First CBM to be nominated. I've always felt like Dark Knight, Iron Man, Winter Soldier, Spiderman 2, The Avengers (maybe) were all great candidates for some awards.

Well IMO I see it as a joke.

A Quiet Place honestly reminded me a little bit of Shyamalan's Signs, minus the preachy religious overtones. It was well-done but I was a little underwhelmed. But maybe it got overhyped for me ahead of time with people comparing it to the original Alien and such, which IMO it doesn't come anywhere close to.

To each their own bald man. lol

I also would've had no issue if WW got a BP nom, even if I didn't like the film as much. I'm glad Kendrick got a nom!

Also, I'm surprised Cuaron didn't get nominated for craft service either. The man does every damn thing. Goddamn.

Being THE first is definitely part of the discussion we're having here. People are looking at Black Panther through a "Why this one?" type of lens. I am not saying they're wrong for doing that. Just an observation.

I demand justice for Ethan Hawke Goddamn it all to hell!

Wait, Marshala Ali is supporting actor in Green Book? The hell?

How did you know that I’m bald? Haha

Hawke's snub is infuriating.

Dafoe?! OUT OF NOWHERE?!
Not really, at least Dafoe got some momentum towards the Oscar (still a surprise that he got in over John D Washington). Hawke’s chance was dead long ago.

His film literally got nominated in another category and he swept critics awards

Can someone clarify if Best Foreign Award is the equivalent of a best picture nom for that category or what? Kinda feels like double dippin' with Roma getting double nods there and then BP category. No real beef with it, but seems kinda much.

It happens. Life is Beautiful to name one. Usually it means Best Foreign Language is a guarantee. But I don’t think a film has won in both. Yet.

Honestly, that's why I have zero issue with foreign language films and animated films not being allowed nominations for Best Picture. If you want them eligible for the top prize, do away with those sub-categories. As great of a movie as it is, the thought of Roma winning Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture rubs me the wrong way. It has a built-in advantage to double-dip that no other film has.
