91st Annual Academy Awards

The one silver lining to this mess is that I see it as one of the last gasps of the Academy's attempt to prevent a "Superhero" film from being nominated.

This whole thing does indicate to me that a cbm like Black Panther , WW, and TDK will eventually make it into the best picture category.

How and when is anyone's guess, but the genre isn't going away , and one of these type of films will eventually break through.

This Popular Film category will be dropped by the following year's Oscars after they see what a dumb fiasco it is. Mark my words.
Like the dumb decision to deliver Oscars to people at their seats that one year.

In an overhaul of Oscar etiquette, the producers of this year's broadcast - expected to attract an audience of hundreds of millions around the world - have announced that some of the awards will be presented to winners at their seats in the audience.

Yeah I don't see this lasting long. Under 3 years. 5 years tops

I will disagree on this, Black Panther has shotty CGI and the first act and climax are typical Marvel boilerplate (as are most MCU movies) but that second act had teeth. What they did with Killmonger and the internal conflict in the titled character were remarkably nuanced and gripping for a superhero slugfest.

I think a case could be made for Ready Player One or especially Mission: Impossible being better made movies, but Black Panther has a heart the others don't. And that includes Avengers: Infinity War, which is all fan service until a dippy cliffhanger ending.
I thought READY Player One had plenty of heart. But I'd give the award to BP

I would be embarrassed to accept this award in front of my peers. The academy is supposed to have more refined tastes than the Blockbuster Video Awards.

Michael Bay would accept his Oscar running up the stage in slow motion during random explosions.

Think of all the films that will now be able to say "From the Academy Award nominated producers of..."

Anybody here predict the Animated Film Oscar wasn’t going to last?

Suicide Squad is an Oscar-winning film. That should have been the first sign of the coming apocalypse.

Just nominate the movies that deserve it, regardless of genre, is that so hard?

Black Panther is not Oscar-worthy, nor is Wonder Woman, and nominating them would be cheap pandering for outside socio-political factors, and everyone knows it.

Why are that movies not worthy but an uninspired bad-scripted Biopic, that nearly no one watch?
Movies should be honored for an cultural Impact too.

I doubt that you will ever see an Oscar given out specifically for cultural impact.

Ohm every racist/gay movie is driven by culture to sensitive the Population for that Topic. CMBYN with a hetero sexual woudnt never make the Oscars.

All I meant was your never going to see an Oscar category for cultural impact.

I hope this Popular Film Category wasn't just a reason to get Black Panther nominated for an Oscar. I imagine the Academy was preparing some backlash if it wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Don't get me wrong, Black Panther was a great movie, but I don't believe its Oscar Best Picture worthy. I think if any comic book movie were to be nominated it should have been The Dark Knight.

Oddly enough, the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars has had a category like this for some time: it's given to the Canadian-produced film that has the highest BO revenue for that season. Some strange movies have walked away with that award: Air Bud, Porky's, Heavy Metal and 3(!) of the Resident Evil movies.

Shocking no one, the idea was all Disney.

https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/abc-oscar-changes-ratings-popular-film-1202899515/

Disney-ABC executives had for years pressed the Academy to impose changes that would shorten the Oscar telecast and incorporate more widely recognized films. (The 2018 Oscars clocked in at an unwieldy 3 hours, 53 minutes; the nine best-picture nominees this year averaged $78.7 million at the U.S. box office.) But at the come-to-Jesus meeting after March’s show, the TV people walked through the lousy ratings at a granular level, identifying precise moments during the show that prompted viewers to stop watching.

They made several recommendations about the ways that the telecast’s length could be reined in, and proposed a “best blockbuster” category that would reward films that had been seen by larger audiences. They also argued that viewers had become fatigued by the ever-increasing number of televised awards shows — including the Golden Globe Awards, whose viewership has been relatively stable in recent years — and that the Oscars should be moved to an early calendar period.

They should do like the Golden Globes and separate Best Picture for Drama and Comedy. That would open up the field some more.

Cross promotion with pornohub and/or the AVN awards. Most Hollywood producers would be down for that.

Is it confirmed that Best Popular Film will be at the upcoming Oscars? Or it will be the next in 2020?

This season.
While the details for a popular film category are still being finalized, a single film is eligible for an Oscar in both categories — Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film and the Academy Award for Best Picture. The new category will be introduced this coming year, at the 91st Oscars.
