If I had to pick this year so far it would be..

Those last two would probably disappear by the end of the year.

What also sucks about this crass opportunism is what happens when you do have movies that not only deserve to be for Best Picture and will get boxed off and ignored now (your Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight, or even Logan), but also Oscar movies that occasionally crossover and have mainstream appeal.

For example, Get Out last year. La La Land the year before that. Also Hidden Figures. The Revenant the year before that.

Those movies all made over $100 million in America and were quantifiably "popular," which makes their all failing to win Best Picture kind of more amusing, as the Oscars still don't like anything that is too popular. At least not in the last 12 years or so. But do those movies get put in the Popular category? What are the parameters? Or is this really just the "stupid movie" award?

What's baffling is how it's even evolved to this. We've had everything from sci-fi, to fantasy, to horror, to comedy, to historical epics, all big money making movies, being considered as Best Picture worthy up until about 10 years ago. People forget Star Wars, The Exorcist, Raiders of the Last Arc, Gladiator, Dances With Wolves, Lord of the Rings, were Best Picture nominated films that were immensely popular. What's weird is that it's almost like there's a cut off point for being too popular now. You still get films like Gravity, Inception, The Martian, Mad Max, etc, occasionally, but they're usually the only film in the nominee list that's made substantial box office.

So, I guess a movie like Titanic would've been put in that category today?

Titanic is the very definition of popular. It would win both.

My predictions for the upcoming Oscar for Popular Film

Black Panther (lock)
The Incredibles 2 (lock)
Avengers: Infinity War (very strong)
Mission Impossible: Fallout (strong)
Mary Poppins Returns (very strong if actually good)

Deadpool 2 (possible)
A Quiet Place (possible)
Hereditary (possible)
Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald (my dream nominee)

Mamma Mia! Here We Go a again for the popular award! Its already a lock for Golden Globes.

Hereditary is not coming anywhere near that category, the audiences kinda hated it

Hereditary had strong legs. The gore hounds on opening weekend didn't like it, the general audience knowing to expect an arty, downer horror film liked it quite a bit and it had a fine multiplier.

But, yeah, it's not going to end up in the "Popular Film" category. Not when A Quiet Place is out there. That's a virtual lock for the category.

I would not consider Hereditary a popular movie. A fervent fan base isn’t the same as a popular one.

Kane that list looks bout right. I hope they call it something else other than “most popular”, but as a fan of animated movies who still thinks the category hinders the chances of one actually winning best picture I’m not surprised at the creation of this category. Like JMC said it’s crazy how great blockbusters used to get nominated all the time and then at some point it became rare for them to get nominated. Before the Best Animated film category was created only one animated film (Beauty and the Beast) had ever been nominated for Best Picture which is insane. I’m interested to see where they place this category when the awards are given out.

I heard that it is going to be something like Best Achievement in Popular Film.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Walhberg:

If only there were the popular category at the Oscars when “Transformers” or “Ted” were released.

“Maybe if they’d had the category before, we’d have won a couple of them,” Mark Wahlberg told Variety on Thursday night at the premiere of “Mile 22.” “We’ve had some really commercially successful films that we think certainly warranted that kind of notoriety. We make films that we want people to enjoy and if we get those kind of accolades, fantastic. If not, we make the movies for audiences to enjoy.”

I’m surprised he has time to make those kind of movies when he’s busy potentially averting another 9/11 type disaster.

But hey, he forgave himself for that guy he half blinded, so it’s all good. I guess.

I would switch out Game Night for Incredibles 2, assuming an animated film can be eligible for both Best Animated Feature and Best Popular Film. Since movies like Up and Toy Story 3 were up for Best Animated Feature and Best Picture in the past, that same rule might apply here. But the first four you mentioned are probably a lock for the category.

I feel like Jungle Book warranted an Oscar for fx work alone.

Not to mention Beauty And The Beast which is responsible for inspiring The Animated Film category because the Academy freaked out that it was nominated for Best Picture.

Beauty and the Beast was nominated 10 years before the Best Animated Feature category was introduced. It factored into the inception of the award, but it wasn't the sole reason for the category being introduced.

But even then, was anyone really up in arms about Beauty and the Beast getting a Best Picture nomination? It really was one of the best of that year, so fair's fair.

Why not be honest and just call it "Best Ratings Bait Motion Picture"?

The only reason they're creating this category is to get more people to watch the show and make the sponsors happy.

I honestly think this won't move the needle that much in ratings. They would be better off getting a host that will get people excited, like Eddie Murphy or Dave Chappelle. This category will probably make more tune out than in.

They hired Murphy but he quit when The Academy dumped Brett Ratner who was going to produce the telecast that year, but he got in hot water for some ill timed comments.
