Bale strikes me as someone who will campaign up to a point so that the movie gets seen by a large audience. I know he used to hate doing press, and probably still does but he seems more accepting of its role in getting films seen, and as he hasn't done a blockbuster since 2012, I think he enjoys getting smaller projects seen.
But when it becomes about campaigning for himself, he doesn't give a fig. I read that he didn't attend any of the parties after nominations went out while people were snarking that Rami Malek was at every one of them. Sadly that played a role, I'm sure.
Yeah, Bale's 'campaign' is really more for the film (press junkets, interviews, etc.) rather than himself. Notice how he's never had a tribute for him when he's ripe for one. The closest one is the one at Telluride but that one is partnered with the premiere of Hostiles. He usually does the bare minimum required but I noticed he does a bit more when he likes the director/project and there's no one but him to do the promotion (see Out of the Furnace, Hostiles). I feel like his co-stars (like Amy bless her sweet generous heart) campaign for him more than himself.
