93rd Annual Academy Awards

Seyfried got a lot of positive buzz for her role but I do agree it is kind of odd. I thought she was good but she is not really in the movie much and the movie doesn't really have a powerhouse scene for her. I kinda doubt she gets a nom but really not sure, guess it depends on the Best Supporting Actress competition.

I thought Oldman was great and if you've seen pictures of Mankiewicz in his 40s, Oldman honestly doesn't look that far off. The film joked about it at the end, though, ha, with the Welles comment to Mank about someone of his age and Mank was like, "I'm 43." But yeah, alcoholism really did a number on Mankiewicz. Of course the earliest flashbacks are a stretch but I can suspend disbelief enough for that if I can watch a MCU movie with a straight face.

All that aside, yeah, Oldman and Seyfried might just barely squeak into the acting nominations, if at all. I think the only decent shot that Mank has at wins are Cinematography, Editing, and Art Direction. Outside chance at Original Screenplay, I am trying to think of what the other contenders are there.

Oh, and I don't really know what the race looks like for Best Original Score but Mank at least has to get nominated there, as that score was phenomenal. Wonder if Reznor & Ross will be competing against themselves between that and Soul.

Seyfried was fine and did a good "1930s actress" impression and had some good scenes/dynamic with Oldman, but to me I agree with @Prison Mike that Lily Collins and Tuppence Middleton stuck out more to me. Maybe even Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer.

The "Oldman is too old" criticism doesn't really matter to me, given Mank was a hard-living alcoholic who looked older than he was. Oldman doesn't specifically look anything like Mank just as a person, but plenty of actors don't look like the real people they play, and most people don't know what Mank looked like anyway, so that's kind of irrelevant.

Oldman was good but personally I thought more of his performance as Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Do we think Chicago 7 is going to do much? I know most of its buzz has subsided a lot but Hollywood loves this kind of movie. The acting is probably too split up to get any nominations there, but I think it might still get noms for Screenplay and Editing.

I think if it gets anything acting-related it'd have to be Best Ensemble. There's not really one standout, though everyone is good.

Maybe something like Screenplay? Hollywood likes Sorkin.

It got a lot of positive mentions about the editing and I do think that is probably one of the most effective aspects of the movie. So I am thinking at least a nomination for that.

I am super curious to see how the Academy handles the Small Axe movies.

I really don't think there's much of a path for Oldman as best actor. Boseman, Hopkins, Ahmed, Lindo, and Yuen seem to have all the buzz.

Score and Art Direction are categories that Mank could contend in. The cinematography was good, albeit I was kind of confused that they went to the lengths they did with the score and then they shot it widescreen and digital.

I would be so incredibly happy if this was the line-up. And a huge step forward for representation in Awards Season.

I think Amazon is sending it to the Emmys as an anthology?

Trial of the Chicago 7 feels like it's fallen a bit buzz wise, but I still hope it ends up with a lot of nominations. I really enjoyed it.

As for Seyfried, she was the only thing I found interesting about Mank. I'm all for her winning a nomination. Please don't give one to Glenn Close for that horrid Hillbilly Elegy movie.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Co-Host Golden Globes on Separate Coasts - Variety

The 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards is going bicoastal. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, returning to helm the the ceremony for the first time since 2015, won’t be in the same room together: Instead, Fey will broadcast live from The Rainbow Room (at the top of Rockefeller Center) in New York City, while Poehler will host from the Globes’ usual spot inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

This marks the first time that the Golden Globes has been beamed from multiple locations in its 78-year history, but not the first time an awards show has been simultaneously held in both New York and Los Angeles, as the Oscars did it for several years in the mid-1950s. The decision to station Fey on the East Coast and Poehler on the West Coast comes as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC and Globes producers Dick Clark Prods. continue to iron out plans for this year’s awards show and adjust to the realities of mounting such a telecast during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among details still to be revealed: Whether presenters and nominees will be invited to participate in person, by remote means or via a mixture of both (which is what the Primetime Emmys did last September). By having two production bases on both coasts, that could allow for more opportunities to include talent working on the East Coast or in Europe who might not otherwise be able to travel to Los Angeles. It also presumably allows Fey to remain put in her home base of New York.

The ceremony will air live on Sunday, Feb.28, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on NBC — pushed back nearly two months later than normal due to the pandemic. Television nomination ballots were due on Jan. 12, while motion picture nomination ballots were due on Jan. 30. Final ballots will be mailed to all HFPA members by Ernst & Young on Feb. 10, and will be due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 23.

Seeing Palm Springs on the Independent Spirt list has renewed my hope that it can score some Globes noms for Comedy. Because it deserves it, without a doubt.

Also, so happy to see Paul Raci become a top contender in Supporting after being on no one's radar. Honestly, Sound of Metal in general came out of nowhere in the prediction game. (I'd been hyped for it ever since the trailer) That's really a testament to its quality, that it forced its way onto these lists alongside all the other big shots predicted to dominate a year in advance.

Tom Pelphrey better get a nom at least for Ozark. Not sure if he was considered a guest star rather than supporting actor

Da 5 Blood floped. Poor Lindo :csad:

Happy to see Queen Colman is nominated for Father and The Crown. Im a little bit surprised about the King nomination and the praise for Promising Young Women.

A little bit sad about the missed screenplay by Im Thinking of ending Things.

No Delroy, damn! Hope he gets a nomination for the Oscars at least! :csad:

Yay for The Crown (superb season), Ozark, and, Vanessa Kirby, and Emily in Paris.

Pretty bad overall, I expect that from the GG though.

Just some thoughts...

Wild that Minari was shoved into Best Foreign... with La Llorona? A horror movie I didn't hear about from Shudder of all places???

Happy for Regina King, Chloe Zhao, Riz Ahmed, Chadwick Boseman (even though I kinda prefer his performance from Da 5 Bloods), Anya Taylor-Joy, Andy Samberg, Ramy Youssef, and Leslie Odom Jr.

Delroy Lindo got snubbed.

James Corden and maybe Jared Leto being nominated for sure will get people upset.

And I guess I need to add The Mauritanian to my list?

Everything else is pretty much expected.
