I saw Tar yesterday. I was definitely confused about the ending (had to google an explanation) but Cate definitely should win for it.

Was it about where she was performing?

I will admit, without knowing much about that particular series, I had to find out what it was and why she was performing there.

Yeah. When I read the explanation, I was like “oh”. I know nothing about the series so yeah I was pretty confused.

In light of the short lists, I'm ecstatic for The Quiet Girl making it to the next round of international films.

No Batman in Score, no EEAAO in VFX or Hair/Makeup and no Nope in Sound are standing out as exceptionally egregious snubs from the shortlists.

And it's not like they didn't watch Nope - it got in for Score and VFX. How do you watch it and NOT fast-track it to a Sound nomination?

How is Babylon getting all these nominations when the reviews haven’t been as kind?

It's not uncommon for that to happen, take Bohemian Rhapsody for example, although that one was more well-received by audiences. I'm guessing Babylon is skirting by on the goodwill that Chazelle has.

The Academy has never had qualms with praising divisive or outright bad films that they took a fancy to before (Bohemian Rhapsody being a prominent recent example). But also it's important to remember that these are technical awards. The guild members are voting on what movies best represent their individual crafts. A movie can be a mess as a whole, but still feature great technical artistry. That's how Suicide Squad '16 became an Oscar winner. Trash movie but amazing makeup.

I don't expect Babylon to be in play in the "above-the-line" categories. But it appears to be technically marvelous, so it will carry a lot of weight in Costumes, Make-up, Production Design, etc...

Having seen Babylon, it's one of those movies that people and critics will either really love or really hate.

It is a technical masterpiece no matter where you land on it.

I just saw Babylon last night and as a production, it's amazing. I hope it gets a ton of nominations. My only issue with it was that the script was quite bloated, but everything else worked for me.

Even though we're still about a month out from nominations being announced and having now seen The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin I feel comfortable in saying that in addition to Everything Everywhere All At Once and Top Gun: Maverick, it'll be one of those four that takes Best Picture. Maverick could pull off the surprise win and be the first blockbuster to win since Return of the King.

Maverick winning best picture? That would be interesting, i didnt like that film at all. I also really dont know wich other film would get it to be honest. I find this one of the weakest film year in a long time to be honest.

I also bet on Maverick this year. The field for dramas is very weak this year and Maverick is the more conservative choice the academy will vote for, instead of Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Although, the academy loves movies about movies, so maybe Fabelmans has still a chance. There is zero buzz nor passion on decent dramas like The Banshees of Inisherin.

It could become Fabelmans just to give Spielberg a oscar and put the Oscars in the news in a big way after their Will Smith debacle.

I think Everything Everywhere All At Once is the frontrunner for the time being, but I hope The Banshees of Inisherin sees a surge now that's it on HBO Max and more people can see it. I love that movie so much.

Banshees was great. I'd honestly be happy with any of the four I named winning Best Picture and I'm pretty sure that's how it'll go down.

I think that Maverick winning would do that more than Fabelmans if only for the sort of shock of "Oh wow, the Academy actually gave it to a blockbuster that wasn't a typical Oscar-bait film for a change".

True, also that could bring the oscars back in the picture for the large audience.

I didn’t care for Banshees but I won’t be mad if it wins. Maverick I liked but I have a hard time seeing it win. I really want Fabelmans or Everything, Everywhere to win.

GoldDerby has Fabelmans and EEAAO with 7/1 & 15/2 odds

link

  1. The Fabelmans
  2. Everything Everywhere All at Once
  3. Top Gun: Maverick
  4. The Banshees of Inisherin
  5. TAR
  6. Women Talking
  7. Avatar: The Way of Water
  8. Elvis
  9. Glass Onion
  10. Babylon

I think it wont happen, but Triangle of Sadness is the best film ive seen this year, hope it gets at least nominated for best film.
