Fantasy A Harry Potter series for HBO?

There is no ethical consumption. Everyone's tolerance is different.

I don't see anyone saying that the original books and movies need to be burned away from the public consciosness. Just that maybe, that is enough. She doesn't deserve anymore money or support. Or, perhaps the most likely, given they way she tripled down when faced with criticism, worry about what she will try to put in future projects.
THAT I can agree with. I just hope WB's breathing down her neck to make sure she doesn't sneak any transphobic or bigoted **** into those last 3 Fantastic Beasts movies or they'll boot her off and have someone else write them. Hell, why don't they just do that ANYWAY? They've had enough controversy to deal with as is!

They can't. Rowling has major control over her IP. WB cannot boot her like they would 99.9% of other creators that they buy rights from. Rowling has veto power of the entire movies.

Those films (as in the plot) have been inoffensive to a fault I think, if she did somehow sneak a trans dig in I think it would be safe to say she's lost the plot.

Hence why I still like HP and the Wizarding World stuff in general. At least she KNOWS she can't sneak or force her idiot beliefs into what's supposed to be mostly lighthearted material for general audiences.

The Fantastic Beats films, when viewed with the knowledge of who she is, is not quite as inoffensive as you may think. Even the original stuff has enough to make me side eye it a bit.

But a lot of beloved literature has racist stuff in it.

Yeah even the books have stuff that doesn’t quite read the same now that I’m an adult. You could argue that she was an inexperienced writer and everybody makes mistakes and “oh it was the 90’s”. And if she had acknowledged it, learned from it and been more inclusive in her later work, maybe that excuse would’ve worked. But here we are instead .

Bloomberg News - Warner Bros. Nears Deal for a New Harry Potter Television Series
The author [JK Rowling] will be involved in the series to ensure it remains loyal to her original material but will not run the show day to day or serve as its primary creator, the people said. She has at times generated controversy with remarks viewed by some as trans-phobic.
Each season of the series will be based on one of JK Rowling’s seven books, said the people, who asked not to be identified since the deal hasn’t been announced, suggesting years of fresh fare from the popular stories.

Intrigued against my better judgment, but I do wonder how much more into the idea I’d be if Rowling hadn’t done the full Orson Scott Card.

It’s a good enough idea to better flesh out the stories that need it most (looking at Order of the Phoenix).

If they don't think this will be constantly controversial and drowning in negative PR for the entirety of its existence they are so very, very wrong. I'm sure it will depressingly be a huge success but it will be Hogwarts Legacy x1000.

Would be super excited if Rowling wasn't Rowling but I don't know if I could even watch this. Way too tainted and depressing.

Also, isn’t the first Harry Potter book like 300 pages? How are you going to make an entire season out of that? They tried making 9 hours out of The Hobbit and look how that turned out.

Oh good lord. That has to be the kiss of death. How desperate are you do this after what happened with the Fantastic Beasts films. And I am getting flashbacks of how George Lucas made all the Mandos in the capital city white in the Clone Wars.

I’m sure they’ll handle the “slaves who love being slaves” and Hermione being viewed as a joke for realizing how wrong this is with tact and grace.

She is absolutely going to insist on Hermione being black this time, as that seems to be one of her go to defenses. And let me tell you, having your black character being called "mudblood" on screen is going to go over really, really well....

As much as I hasten to give too much thought to this one, when you’ve got a story set over the better part of a year, I think there’s room to embellish.

I wouldn't be so certain. I said this in the HBO Max thread but even if you take away all the controversy surrounding Rowling, the Harry Potter films are still widely beloved and way too recent for people to get onboard with a remake, regardless if it's a series.

I could maybe see the appeal for adapting everything that was left out of the larger books like Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince but even then it's way too soon for any kind of remake. Besides, what else needs to be said with something like Chamber of Secrets? The extended cut of that movie is nearly three hours and the book is 341 pages. It adapted nearly everything.

I am a casual Harry Potter fan, but looking forward to this.

I hope it focuses more on the day to day life at Hogwarts.

I always wanted to see the more day-to-day aspects of the books translated and a decade ago I would’ve been 1000% on board with this. Now I’m totally apathetic to this news.

Have to say, desperate as they are, WB is really playing with fire here. Whatever level of involvement Rowling has, this show will be drowning in controversy. Everyone involved is going to be asked about her. And assuming she herself does any promo for this, it’s going to turn into a ****show real quick.

Given how big this IP is, it’s definitely going to be getting the blockbuster movie budget that later seasons of Game Of Thrones and Stranger Things got. Pretty stoked for this as I think tv is usually the better way to adapt series like Potter anyway as they’re not restricted by the usually condensed run time of a movie, so they’re less likely to cut stuff out in the tv format for the sake of adhering to the stringent two hour plus running time of a movie.

That being said, Potter has been quite tainted by Rowling being a bigot and I fully understand those who would refuse to watch this series out of principle because they don’t want to support the terrible human being which is J.K. Rowling.

Noone mentioned the episode length. I can see 40min episodes with the last 8min of it being credits. Sure it will have some fat here and there.

I am just already tired of the inevitable race swapping characters and internet meltdowns.. My guess is Hermione becomes black and Trunks a transgender. Maybe they will discover Dumbledores sexuality here in it with some flashbacks as well.

It’ll be hard to recreate the chemistry of that movie cast. Also, I thought the films did well with cutting the fat that’s not necessary for an adaptation. The show will throw everything from the books in but that doesn’t necessarily make a better adaptation.

They probably wanted a TFA style sequel with the original cast, but Radcliffe and Watson want nothing to do with Rowling, so this was thier next best idea. Still a terrible one.
Are they that bereft of ideas?
