Fantasy A Harry Potter series for HBO?

Oh my god, they even used the Williams score.

what the hell are we even doing here?

lol I noticed that!

Check out our brand new reboot of the books!

And here’s the movie theme.

10 bucks says they actually keep the Williams theme for the series.

its one thing to do a tv reboot of a popular movie series, but 7 books? Like good luck recasting everybody and doing the entire story again.

In a world where JKR isn't a morally abhorrent monster there's a wonderful series to be made of these books. But, like, what's the point if you're going to be stuck with all the imagery and branding of the movies? You have to assume they're gonna use the music and the castle and the basic aesthetics since they have such an industry built around those.

...just imagine how many re-castings are going to happen, during it's run.

Also, why is the TERF loser still attached?

Because she still owns the IP, and WB can't do anything without her approval. And after the rejection of her last attempt in this world, she is still needs to be heavily controlling.

A world of no to this.

It's not just the iconic imagery of the movie series (plus the casting) but there are things that work beautifully on the written page that don't translate well on screen. Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Deathly Hallows are probably the most faithful book adaptations in cinema (and omit minor characters like Peeves) -- having a series adaptation of each book is overkill. And how do you replace Robbie Coltrane and Alan Rickman in roles that JKR basically entrusted to them?

$10 says Max will kill the series after 3 seasons. JKR should take her millions, get off social media and go back to a quiet life with her family in her Edinburgh mansion.

I'd wager that most of the adult cast will be made up of relative unknowns who need the work/exposure. A lot of established actors won't want the smoke and I'm assuming most of the budget will be going to the technical stuff.

What a dumb waste of time and money.

[looks at surprising amount of english actors who at bare minimum don't think Rowling should be villainized]

Yeah, I don't think it is going to be rough to fill out the adult cast.

I feel bad for the kid actors. They will not deserve being in this ****storm.

Yeah I forgot about that aspect of it all. Although I doubt they'll be going for bigger name actors anyway. I think they'll aim to take the Rings of Power route: going for lesser known names so they can blow the budget on VFX and locations.

Fully agreed about the kids. Social media is going to rip them apart. I feel sorry for them already.

Let’s see how long they’re able to use that excuse.

Oh I didn’t even think of that. They probably won’t change the aesthetic too much because they still want people to go to the parks. This is going to be derivative as hell.

Calling JKRs views on trans people nuanced is like calling Mel Gibson’s relationship with Jewish people complex.
Or Trump's with black folk, brown folk, Asian folk, trans folk, indigenous Americans, gay people, those with disabilities, those who don't get enough sleep, those who get too much sleep, the lactose intorlent, foodies...

What an absolutely miserable decade of unending controversy and strife this project is going to be for everyone involved if it goes its full run.
Social media for the next decade - **** them kids.

TBH it's not JK being involved that bothers me as even she will recognize a number of her HP characters can be tweaked to reflect today, and that's without losing their inherent character traits.

What concerns me is whether they can elevate HP beyond your countless amount of awful YA shows on streaming today. Especially one where they can't vague their way through their age.

It all depends on the Show runner. Ideally they would be thoughtful of today's issues while being passionate about the source.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The showrunner is JoAnne. Anyone who is nominally the showrunner is subject to her whims. She will be the one with the power.

She is going to make Hermione black, thinking it makes her look good, much like making Dumbledore gay, and then going to keep in how she is a pest for protesting slavery and will definietly keep in calling her slurs. She is a ****ing idiot, like you usually get when money means nothing to you anymore.

You are aware she's a bigot, right? Not like an undercover one either.

Yep. She'll want a veneer of progress, but she's also too vain to actually consider her problematic book material is anything but perfect.

I’ve been rereading the books and they really only left out stuff that wasn’t important IMO. I’ll watch the show but this is the definition of unnecessary.

I actually think some of the movies are borderline incoherent nonsense if you haven't read the books. Like, Prisoner of Azkaban is the best movie but there are some shocking omissions of key details being clarified that rob the story of a lot of its richness unless you've read the novel and are projecting that information onto the film. Deathly Hallows, which I also really like, has a number of major issues like that as well just as a film.

So in an alternate world where JKR isn't terrible and this isn't going to be a gigantic uncreative waste of time I do sincerely think this could be a great idea.

There's definitely room to tell a much richer story with fully fleshed out characters, particularly from Book 3 onwards. Remus, Snape, Sirius, Ginny and Ron are just a few that the movies barely scratched the surface on.

Fair enough on the Book 1 and 2 adaptations, they were more or less complete. I imagine the corresponding seasons for those books will be puffed up with new elements from the past such as following Harry's parents and their friends. That's assuming each season are the same length, maybe they won't be. That would be certainly interesting.
