The fact that they've removed the dashcam video just adds to the sketchiness of all this.

The cop stopping her was petty. He u-turns, speeds up behind her, she moves out of the way, and stops her for not signalling.

I didn't even notice they took down the video. That is sketchy as f***. This really does seem like some very shady stuff is going down with this case

This is the reason body cam footage needs to be stored and monitored by a public oversight committee, not the police themselves.

Well, they say there's another video out with the glitches taken out.

Some are speculating that her mugshot was taken after she died.

UPDATE: Cops Say Sandra Bland Told Guards She Had a History of Suicidal Behavior

A Texas sheriff says Sandra Bland—the 28-year-old black woman found dead in her jail cell last week—admitted to her jailers that she had tried to commit suicide the previous year. Still, her guards say they still declined to put her on a suicide watch because she “didn’t seem depressed.”

Bland was arrested June 10 after failing to signal while changing lanes. The seemingly routine traffic stop reportedly escalated when Bland refused to put out a cigarette, infuriating the officer. She was arrested and found dead in her jail cell three days later.

Officials say she self-asphyxiated using a plastic trash bag. Her family has challenged that assertion, saying that they are confident Bland—who had recently accepted a new job at her alma mater—“was killed and did not take her own life.”

But according to the New York Times, which obtained a copy of the jail’s intake form, Bland did admit some history of suicidal behavior, indicating that she had attempted suicide in 2014 after having a miscarriage.

The Waller County sheriff, R. Glenn Smith, said in an interview that Ms. Bland had mentioned a suicide attempt during interviews with two officials who processed her entry into the jail on July 10. Sheriff Smith said that jailers had elected not to place a suicide watch on her cell after she told them that she was not depressed at the time, but was just angry about her detention.

In addition, the authorities late on Wednesday released the 15-page jail-booking screening form, which included questions about Ms. Bland’s mental health. On the form, the “yes” box was checked in response to the question, “Have you ever been depressed?” On whether she had ever attempted suicide, the form noted “yes,” in 2014, by using “pills” because of a “lost baby.”

A lawyer for Bland’s family tells the New York Times they were unaware of her alleged attempt and have “no evidence” to indicate she was depressed or suicidal. Her death is currently being investigated as a potential murder.

Well, the loss of a child is completely different than this situation. Although anything is possible. This is such a weird case

Still such a weird case and it's TX so I'm inclined not to believe anything they come up with anyway.

So why was she arrested and jailed?

Basically the cop pulled her over for no reason then got pissed she wouldn't put out her cig and get out of the car and when he was trying to force her out she resisted and was charged with kicking the officer. The officer has already been put on desk duty and his dept has come out and said he violated her rights

I am very sorry that this happened.
She was a very beautiful woman.
It always tugs at my heartstrings to see such a striking photo and to hear that something terrible happened to that person .
My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

It really ticks me off the that DA is trying to blame Sandra's death on cannabis altering her mood.

Yeah because people who are stoned often kill themselves. There's no scientific basis for this accusation. This tool can just make ridiculous claims simply because cannabis happens to be an illegal drug.

These people are only concerned with absolving themselves of responsibility even if it requires deceit and baseless slander.

FL has def been involved in some shady stuff over the years haha. Hell, anything run by republicans makes me wary

I used to be at least open to the idea of Republicans in charge of anything involving the government but now I'm honestly afraid of the kinds of things they would do if they had their way.

Jeb Bush had to recently backtrack his promise to end "entitlement programs" when the (strongly leaning Republican) older voters realized this meant an end to Medicare/Medcaid type programs. He rephrased it to mean phasing them out and tried to pretend he wasn't looking to pander to voters who see government assistence as entitlement.

Because not being rich enough to afford medical treatment (or food, or clothing, or basic necessities) is an entitlement. :whatever:

Given Bland's history, I could believe she committed suicide but the circumstances around her arrest and then subsequent death make it impossible to accept at face value she did commit suicide.

Texas is not a state where I would trust the authority to be honest and forthcoming if there was anything improper behind the scenes which is why they should be pushing harder for more transparency in their actions.

LAPD cop gets 3 years in jail for beating suspect caught on dashcam

There is some justice here but the woman who was beaten later died from primarily from "cocaine intoxication" so the beating part itself was not relevant enough to warrant a more serious sentence according to the justice system.

A Los Angeles Police Department 18-year-veteran was handed a three-year jail term Thursday, six weeks after being found guilty of striking a handcuffed female suspect in the crotch and throat. Much of the 2012 incident was captured on a police cruiser's dashcam.

Officer Mary O'Callaghan, was convicted of felony assault under the color of authority. The 35-year-old victim, Alesia Thomas, died later that July evening. The medical examiner concluded that cocaine intoxication was a "major factor" in the death of the Los Angeles mother of two, so the officer was not charged in connection to the woman's death.

The sentencing comes in the wake of high-profile police beatings nationwide, prompting both police departments and the public to call for officers to be outfitted with body cams and to have dash cams inside patrol vehicles. In this instance, O'Callaghan's conviction underscored the cameras' value of providing the public a level of accountability that likely would not have existed without the surveillance technology.

During the Thursday sentencing hearing, the victim's mother, Sandra Thomas, said from the witness stand that "I have asked God to help me learn how to forgive her."

The 50-year-old officer, a mother of three, cried when it was her turn to address the judge. "Mother to mother, I am extremely sorry for the loss of your daughter," she said.

Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta suspended 20 months from the 36-month sentence. With good behavior, that means the officer could be released in five months.

The dashcam video sealed the case, jurors said after convicting the officer in June. "It played a big role," Deedra Garcia, the jury forewoman, told reporters at the time. "It gave us a lot of evidence."

The LAPD is in the process of outfitting 7,000 officers with body cams.

I've done a lot of coke in my time as well as been around people doing copious amounts and I would venture a guess that she wasn't doing Scarface amounts of pure good yayo so that leads me to believe the beating was more substantial than they are letting on in regards to her death

Yeah where's the evidence she would've died of cocaine without being severely beaten.

If any of us beat down an old man with a heart condition and he dies after we beat him up, are we going to get off lightly because he had a heart condition?

Heck no.

That is why I put it in here. There is enough question as to how much her being hit in the throat contributed to her death. I have been hit in the throat before (without malicious intent such as this case was) and that really hurts and can impact breathing for hours afterwards.

To say it did not contribute significantly to her death makes me wonder just how much cocaine this woman must have been taking.

A post from a facebook friend of mine that I think is appropriate for this thread:

The boss wants things done and middle management wants to please the boss. Middle management wants to please the boss so much, in fact, they seldom admit the boss' expectations are impractical. Instead, they patronize the boss and pressure the employees. The employees, then, will do whatever it takes to achieve the impractical and management is fine with this. But once employee behavior reflects negatively on the organization, the boss, management and the employees will circle the wagons. If the heat continues, the employee will take the fall and his or her actions will be labeled as an isolated incident. But it isn't an isolated incident, it's just business as usual. Now take that scenario and apply it to law enforcement. Certainly, not all cops are bad cops. But the system provides almost a disincentive to be a good one

That pic is messed up in so many ways.

And DJ Kidd......your admission to coke use so casually is kind of disturbing. I'm hoping you mean cherry coke and not those white girls. :o

Haha man I've been DJing for over a decade. I don't know of any DJs that weren't big in the party scene. Only thing I never did was stick needles in my arm. But I'm sober now, I'll have 1 year on the 27th. I'm not bashful about my past or ashamed of it

Congrats on you upcoming anniversary.

and your honesty is refreshing.

People get so used to wearing masks they can't recall their true face even when they try.
