Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents of SHIELD - 3x02 - "Purpose in the Machine" - Discussion Thread

Eh...I'm just bitter that it seems like we're getting a retread of the same story they've already told twice, when SHIELD vs Nu-SHIELD would have been a great story to save for the Civil War tie-in.

Not to bash this episode...I liked it more than last week. Ward instantly makes every scene more interesting.

It doesn't seem like a retread at all.... people act like the Nu-shield was a season long store... it was like 6 weeks. Why can't we wait and see what they have planned instead of complaining in advance.

I'm actually enjoying that book

A HYDRA operative named Agent Ward appears in the Secret Wars storyline Hail Hydra.

http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Hail_Hydra_Vol_1_1

Strucker Jr. is Werner, his father is Wolfgang. Ward even said that Wolfgang von Strucker was one of HYDRA's greatest leaders (which is very strange because he had maybe ten minutes on screen time) but then he died a meaningless death (killed by Ultron).

BTW, did no one notice that Ward brought tacos to Werner just like John Garrett brought tacos to him?

Good episode. I was surprised that they resolved the Jemma situation so fast.
Lets hope that they will show some cool stuff in flashbacks.

I don't think he being back means her situation is resolved. I think that was the point of her waking up ready to defend herself. something happened to her there.. .we just don't know what yet.

I'm not sure that Jemma came back. Fitz may have brought back a shapeshifter.

Great episode, so glad this show is back. Needed my marvel fix

Simmons demonstrated too much emotion to be a shapeshifter, I'm afraid. What she faced during her stay in that planet is likely going to be the story later on in the show.

Yeah, but it still had her off the map because her relationship didn't work out, causing her to run home and take care of her father as if to prove she can handle domestic, 'normal' life. It wasn't too painful since pretty much everyone called her out on it, but then again everyone who called her out on it and eventually sparked May into returning to action all happen to be men. And her return wasn't for the sake of Simmons, Bobbi, Daisy, SHEILD, or her own realization that she doesn't need to fit into this normal lifestyle to be happy but rather about getting revenge on a guy who slept with her and then turned evil. So that ha a lot of unfortun-

I think she's done with revenge. Agent 33 is dead, at Ward's hands, because of SHIELD trickery.

May was accused of acting out of fear this episode by her father and Hunter. This is not "GRR KILL BETRAYING EX-LOVER" but fear for her family. And Ward is completely capable of that kind of depravity. She was guarding the roost. :)

Going after Ward with Hunter is proactive, the best defense is a good offense type thinking.

The guy we saw WAS Werner von Strucker, son of Wolfgang von Strucker. Werner is his name not his father's. Also, it seems you're thinking of Andreas maybe?

::facepalm:: Argh. I'm so happy I've gone back to forum browsing, I recorded the episode and watched it TWICE and I missed that. So imprinted on Fenris, the Strucker twins...

Also, I remembered Strucker being captured by the Avengers, I didn't remember him being killed by Ultron. My hatred of the Bruce/Natasha romance has made me unwilling to rewatch the movie.

Well, he's a lot prettier than his comic book self, so thats good.:gngl:

Hey, it's the kid from Unbreakable. Hi, kid from Unbreakable.

I liked the twist with him being a Strucker. Great ep all around. 4/5

Solid follow-up. I was very surprised at how quickly they got Jemma. Fitz is proving to be quite a badass. And Daisy is getting better and better with each episode. I'm also quite looking forward to the Hunter/May interactions. Those should be fun.

VonStrucker might as well have been Col. Klink in AOU, I question why they even bothered using the name. Either way it won't take much for AOS to do a better job with his progeny. Still such a waste.....

Maybe the use of the Time Gem in an upcoming film will resurrect a few of the characters Marvel wasted in previous films. Just as long as it makes more sense than DOFP.

Good episode looking forward to the next.

Great episode. The scene with Fitz struggling to get Jemma back was nerve wracking. I loved it. Glad to see that subplot resolved(?) so quickly. (Yeah, I know it's not over yet) I'm so glad this show is back.

Yeah, I'm glad they didn't drag saving Simmons. Doing so would've made Fitz an annoying wreck each week.

It's a huge waste. We didn't even get enough time to really enjoy the guy. I know we're not supposed to dare question Whedon's decisions around here but come on.

I think there was some self awareness form the writers about that because didn't Ward say he died a meaningless death?

I knew I recognized that kid, thank you

 Also Mystic River, Gladiator, and much more recently The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake. I didn't realize how much stuff he's been in over the years.

I believe so. :sly:

Well, that's not really "self awareness"... if anything, more like a punch from Jed at his brother^^
AoU has only Joss Whedon credited as writer, and he's not on the writing team of SHIELD.

I don't think it was a shot at anyone. He died murdered in a cell so Ultron could tie up loose ends. It wasn't supposed to be a death filled with meaning.

It was pointless too. If they wanted a first act villain for them to fight, they could have just had Strucker get captured and end his role in the film there. Killing him him served basically no purpose.

A surprisingly emotionally charged episode. Some great character work in there without sacrificing any of the action and thrills. AOS is just going from strength to strength. I can't believe how much I'm looking forward to new episodes on a weekly basis.

I like that they got Simmons back, but now that she's back, I'm wondering what the impetus will be to explore more of the Death-Punishment planet's mythos. I'm thinking we're in for a couple of Simmons' flashback that will somehow reveal a threat that will compel them to either find a way to get there or at the very least uncover more knowledge about it.

I honestly find myself looking most forward to Jemma's story arc. WHAT HAPPENED?!?

I also want to see what happens with Joey. I really hope they don't set him up to die... that would suck especially since he seems like a cool guy.

it wasn't a waist, it was to show the mindset of Ultron. that killing was a second thought. and if he didn't have a use for you then he will just kill you with no thought
