Comics Amazing Spider-Man#560 The Return of....

So... anybody else dig the story?

The fight scenes really reminded me of some old 60's Ditko fight scenes... they should give Martin a regular art position on this book, or at least give him a high profile Marvel book to work on...

With the obvious Ditko influence, it's no surprise that his ASM issues, as well as the Doc Strange "The Oath" mini, were great.

Of course, it helps when you have great writers, like he did in the aforementioned comics.

:yay:

I really liked McDuffie's run on FF. Pair them up on something, and I think you got a winner. Once Millar finishes sucking FF up, they can put him back on there with Martin.

And I liked all the touches that Dan the Man is putting in there. The Cap Warhol, the movie poster that made me think "Mr and Mrs Smith", and sure enough, one of the stars is Angelina Jolie (or enough letters to make you think so.)

OH. MY. GOD. Some of you people are still whining about the JMS-Verse not being addressed?!

Brand New Day has been GOLDEN so far, I hope it's NEVER changes back.

The new villains are great (specially PaperDoll and Screwball, it's about time Spidey has some female baddies), Harry being alive rules, Spider-Man will never grow older than you, give it up, this is great stuff.

Zoom.

Aloha,
Well said,well said.

ummm....ok?

anyways over all....I liked the story.
can't wait for the next issue. which is when I'll be jumping back in.

and it's been ALONG time since I've said that for a spidey comic. :yay:
Paper doll was UBER creepy and Spidey has no clue how to beat her.

559 and 560 have been the first two issues of BND that I've really liked. I like the story, love the art, and like the new villains.

And this Martin guy is an AWESOME artist!!! :word:

Yeah, I was really surprised to see Martin doing the art on Amazing. I didn't know he was one of the scheduled artists. He did the latest Doctor Strange miniseries with Brian K. Vaughn that is where I really fell for his art. And it was definitely spot on in the past two issues.

Everytime Slott does an issue of Spidey it just feels so perfect. He was made to write this title. I really like the new Paper Doll character as well and the big reveal at the end was pretty cool. I kind of figured it out but it was very cool to actually see it. It definitely feels like old school Spidey again but with a new twist on it. Great job all around.

Another great issue. Loved that last page, and have never been happier in my Spidey-reading life than I am right now. Thanks Spidey-braintrust!!

Also, did anyone else buy the first Brand New Day Premiere Hardcover that was out this week?

Aloha,
Yes I have it on order because I collect Spidey HC/First Editons. But it is just reprints and maybe some commentary.
So is it confirmed that Paper Doll is a mutant?

Sucking the life outta the people she wraps herself onto isn't a villainous enough power?

:wow: :wow: :wow:

:yay:

I'm just glad it's a female. Spidey needs more of those in his life. Female villians, that is. :yay:

AAAAGH! I really hated the artwork in 559 &560! It was horrid for a Spidey title! I understand that some folks are Martin fans, but on a Spidey title? This is AMAZING Spider-man, not mediochre, cartoony spider-guy! What a bust. I've been buying Spider-man for 16 years and have never seen it this bad. I posted a critique on Marvels threads, but, of course, they pulled it off. I am happy to see that Jimenez is coming back soon. It was AGONY! Marcos Martin should stick to Dr. Strange and kiddie books. That's all I got. I'm done with my gripe.:bh:

It wasn't pulled off... it was transferred to the Amazing Spider-Man thread...

And I've seen some bad artists on Spidey over the last 16 years, and Marcos certainly isn't one of them...

But to each his own... glad you're still reading the books.

thanks, Bat, but I meant the actual MArvel.com blog site. not here- actually I was hoping that this site would be more conducive with critiques. MArvel wants to sell books, so I understand why they would remove a post criticizing their top book, but my intent was only to see if others agreed.

I think the balance is split 3 ways around here, with a third supporting it, a third against it, and a third sitting on the fence seeing how things play out...

And there are good debates here with the nay & yay sayers, as long as it stays respectful... there are the big-mouthed types that talk tough and show no respect for the other guys opinions, and that's not right... once on a while, even when the respectful debaters get into it, a jab or a dig gets thrown, but it's usually pretty cool around here as long as you keep a level head and respect the other guy's opinion (no matter how much you disagree with it).

good deal. so far though, I've only had dirt slung at me, but we'll see. So I throw it out again- Can anyone explain to me what the appeal is on Martin? Looking for real feedback here- why is he on Amazing Spider-man? Opinions, please!:spidey:

It's the opinion of several people that the art is good though. I kinda get what you're saying by it being cartoonish, but I don't think that takes away from a book like ASM. Adds to it would be closer IMO.

Doc, you know you want to see Toomes O face, don't lie.

I think I responded to this question in the ASM thread in the Marvel Comics Forum...

Still playing ASM catch up, here's my feelings on #559-560.

559-

So..Dan Slott returns, who wrote that OK first BND arc, which seemed cooler than it was because of the amazing McNiven art.

I'm not loving the Marcos Martin pencils, but they do have a certain flair to them. Having said that use of panels on pg 8 in which Spidey reclaimed his camera from a building was really cool. Petey getting the paparazzi gig was a no brainer considering how good he has been at getting Spidey shots all these years. Bobby Carr seen at speedtrack with Kirsten, heh.

I was starting think this issue was pretty unremarkable, being host to a lame super villain, when I got to the scene were Petey started his paparazzi career. I enjoyed Pete's cockiness until he got caught. About the camera- the muscle would have made sure they got the memory card, So that was kinda dumb. Also Bennet continuing to get Pete's name wrong is wearing very thin, but it was good to see him get paid. The stalker weirdo Paperdoll does not seem too interesting to me and overall I thought this issue was pretty whatever.

560-

After last issue, the unusual pop art stylings of this cover (which like all covers we get too see months in advance) now make sense.
Cool.

I am immediately impressed with the panel layout on pg 1 and as I progress through the first few pages I come to realize that Marcos Martin's style is not only growing on me, but is also pretty slick. However nifty pencils alone is not enough to make me rate this issue.

While reading the scene with Pete and Harry at the Coffee Bean I wondered if they are ever going to attempt to address Harry's presence in the book, you know, why the f**k he is alive?!?! I find it pretty damn annoying, and one of BIG reasons I am unable to fully enjoy ASM now.

So the big ending- MJ being Bobby Carr's fun piece for the weekend.

It will be interesting to read #561 and see what, if anything gets revealed about MJ's background, more specifically what she believes she has been doing for the last 5 or so years instead of being married. I take it everything is as it happened in real time 616, except after MJ returned to NYC in ASM#242 her and Peter did not reunite. Ok that's all fine, but does this mean she has no memory of any romantic relationships for 5 or so years?... Wouldn't this be a bit weird?.. Same thing for Pete- in his mind has he been a social ****** for 5 years? ...

Unfortunately I get the feeling her perception of the past, and Pete's, will not be addressed any time soon. Meanwhile the writers will try to figure something out. We have had some cool new villains, Spidey being funny again, some cute easter eggs, but when you get right down to it there is no foundation to any of this. No logic, No sense.

Haha, this book is such a piece of crap..
