Annihilation Conquest

I've heard some good stuff about that book. I may check it out one day. For now, I'm perfectly content to avoid the Authority, it's countless spin-offs, whatever incarnation of Wildcats Jim Lee is doing these days and Gen-13.

Shouldn't be hard too avoid Wildcats and Authority since they never come out.

I was pretty disappointed to hear that Jim Lee was taking Wildcats back. It really thrived under Alan Moore in volume 1 and Joe Casey in volumes 2 and 3. Then we got one issue of the Morrison/Lee take and that's it. That's one of the major reasons the Wildstorm imprint is doing so bad in sales. They had some great titles after the reboot a year or two ago, like Stormwatch: PHD and the aforementioned Welcome to Tranquility, but not as many people are likely to buy fringe titles like those without the major, core titles like Wildcats and Authority anchoring the line. It'd be like taking Spider-Man and the X-Men off Marvel's publishing block and then pushing Immortal Iron Fist and The Loners; both are great books, but without the core titles a lot of readers who aren't really deep into the universe as a whole are just gonna jump ship altogether. ****in' Morrison, Ha, and Lee. :(

Can Ha really be blamed? Isn't the delay on that book Morrison?

You know it's going to happen, though. I mean, that's basically what all the signs are pointing towards. And it wouldn't necessarily mean that Rich is the ultimate savior. I'm sure that once the Phalanx are shut down, Ultron will separate himself from them and the remaining heroes will have to stop him on their own.

Eh, maybe it'll be a bit of both. Like Star-Lord's crew is tasked with the mission of taking down the Phalanx spire and then they're overwhelmed but Nova shows up to save them before "dying." Then Peter's all, "Oh shnap, he's infected! Here, let me give him this cure I've been carrying around for this entire mini-series without dispensing to anyone!" Then Nova joins the others and they all take down Ultron together. While holding hands and singing.

Yeah, I can see this sort of stuff happening.

I hate the Groot-is-now-******ed nonsense. He NEVER talked like a small child in the Star-Lord mini. Why is he speaking like one, now?

I don't like it either. I agree with your sentiment that it is amazing that DnA can get so much right yet seem to strike out with a near no-brainer like Groot. Not to undermine Giffen or anything, but there are harder characters to write (Sentry, even). They've helped get and maintain Nova as a near A-List class character and fumble so badly with Groot? It can seem irksome.

Giffen is DC exclusive so I don't see how he could return for an AC spin-off. Considering AC is selling worse than it's previous installment, I doubt we will get any more ongoings from it, but I could be wrong. NOVA is the best selling title of the bunch. I am enjoying these space epics, even if they can't always top themselves. And while Kang wasn't behind this francas, he easily could show up for a third...

Bah. Groot's not exactly going to make his way into an ongoing anytime soon.

I want to see Annihilus return for another romp and maybe bring the Shi'ar in.

It shouldn't matter how popular the character is, to be able to portray an accurate characterization, or at least keep up with the most recent characterization.

Writers' difference. Groot doesn't seem likely to survive this intergalactic epic either.

Groot's on Ultron's list I'm telling ya. He won't survive this encounter any more than Bug will. The reason why he's been dumbed down by DnA is because neither writer has an attachment to the character. That all points to the death of Groot.

Can the Phalanx assimilate plants? I not, DnA should totally play that up and give Groot a more important role.

That's what I thought, too. I just don't think I've ever seen them assimilate any sort of plant life.

But on the other hand, if they diminish his role, no one will care about his death.

I mean, sure, they killed off Gabe, but that was after at least trying a few pages to note his growing rapport with Peter Quill, Quill narrating that Gabe was a good soldier, and all that. Groot has had none of that. I mean, that doesn't mean he WON'T die, but such would be a meaningless one.

It is presumed that the Phalanx could assimilate all organic matter, but I haven't seen them assimilate plants. Phyla & Moondragon visited the Cotati or however you spell the sentient psychic alien-plants and the Phalanx didn't bother to assimilate then, least on panel.

I agree with the sentiment that DnA aren't handling Groot well in dialogue. Just because he's a background character doesn't mean he can't be handled decently. I mean, we tore Millar to shreds for stuff like that in CW, which at times had a cast of dozens.

Warlock of the New Mutants could use his transmode virus on plants and absorb their energy.

Thanks for the factoid. I wasn't into the New Mutants so Warlock wasn't on the top of my mind.

The Phalanx was an "offshoot" of the Technarch race that Warlock hailed from, so maybe there are differences. Or, the Phalanx are the same and simply haven't had to assimilate plants. As they are being run by Ultron, they may be adhering to his hatred of humanoids.

Another factoid or two for you. Warlock was Prince of the Technarch and the son of the Magus who was a Galactus level being.

Hey Dread, you're usually the guy in the know, what's this I hear about Giffen writing a DC-Wildstorm crossover/fight title?
