Antje Traue IS Faora in The Man of Steel - Part 1

I thought she was great, she had some great action scenes with superman and I actually found her character more menacing than Zod was.

I think that was the intent. Zod was supposed to be more sympathetic than scary. I also think that Zod got scarier as he lost his mind.

Can you explain the sense it makes?

I would respond but it seems you have covered it elsehwere:

If she had said something like 'evolution is inexorable', or 'I am the superior being; you are a relic', or something like that, it would have made some sort of sense.

It is the idea of evolution 'winning' which is problematic, because it puts the cart before the horse. Better adapted beings will thrive while those less so will not, so evolution is a result of the 'winning' rather than its cause.

And history doesn't have anything to say about evolution. She meant something like 'evolutionary theory suggests that evolution is inevitable'. Not a good line, either, but not actually wrong.

It seems you are just playing with semantics seeing as it appears you completely understood what Goyer was saying, you just didn't like the wording.

No, with respect his 'wording' doesn't mean the same thing as what I wrote- or anything at all.

You wouldn't be able to analyze if if you didn't understand what he was saying. He seems to have communicated his point just fine.

This "Evolution always wins" thing is turning into something almost as bad as the "FOR YOU" crap from TDKR, I swear. :D

As noted:

Faora-Ul said:
You're weak, son of El, unsure of yourself.

The fact that you possess a sense of morality - and we do not - gives me evolutionary advantage.

And if history has proven anything it is that evolution always wins.

When I see the actual text of her statements I take it to mean this:

She knows she's genetically engineered and understands it, she's also keenly aware that because of her genetically engineered "profile" that she will do whatever is required to ensure her role is fulfilled which removes her necessity to consider things before acting (that dreaded morality crap, at least in her opinion most likely) or doing things that we "lesser evolved beings" would find immoral or outright wrong based on our societal rules.

He's unsure of himself for an obvious reason that many people still miss: it's the first real fight he's ever been in over the course of his whole life, and he's got a lifetime of unconscious self-restraint going on that can't just be switched off in the blink of a Kryptonian eyelid. Add on top of that level of restraint another one that I'm confident Jonathan would have imbued into him:

Never hit a woman. ;)

That right there would surely make him act completely differently towards Faora as well, and in their entire battle he never directly punches her straight to the face or even attempt it. After she says "unsure of yourself" he tosses a body blow - not at her face/head. Then he tries to body check her and she catches him mid-air and choke slams him into the ground.

Outside in the street when the other Kryptonian and Faora double team Kal and he spends most of his time just pushing her away while directly trying to attack/punch/hit the other Kryptonian - I say "other" because I still don't have any 100% confirmation that it's Nam-Ek even in spite of many people making the claim (that character isn't listed in the credits but Dev-Em is, go figure).

And the final "hit" comes from Kal slamming into her with another flying body check just as she's about to slice and dice Hardy and face-planting her into the pavement to a degree that damages her suit's helm.

But Kal never directly goes for a solid in-the-face punch on Faora, and that's probably because of his human upbringing more than anything else.

As for her actual "evolution always wins" statement I take that as pure Kryptonian genetically engineered arrogance which she has in spades, nothing more. She more than likely knows Kal is a natural born Kryptonian and like Zod she considers it heresy and probably even a major negative, especially after fighting with him for just a few seconds in that scene inside the IHOP.

He doesn't do anything to impress her, aka he doesn't put up a good fight, so she figures he's just another weakling because of being a "pure birth" or whatever.

For someone that's never been in a real fight before catching her in mid-air, I'd say he does pretty well. :)

the only thing I didn't like about Faora, was that they changed her name from Faora Hu-Ul to simply Faora-Ul, that doesn't sit well with me.

Now I've already had this conversation with others so let me get this part out of the way, its not a sexist thing, it's simply if your going to have it for one, have it for all, don't pick and choose.

Lara is still Lara Lor-Van, not Lara-Van or Lara-El, and Kara from the prequel comic is still Kara Zor-El, the women take their fathers full name as their last, that is clearly how most (hey 2 out 3 that we know of is most lol) of them have it.

No, his 'point' remains unknown; ArmsHeldOut and I have just tried to reconstruct what might have been intended. Objectively, the line that Faora delivered is meaningless. It doesn't serve its purpose 'just fine', because the effect is to imply that Faora doesn't understand evolution or that she is unable to construct a sentence properly. As Kryptonians are supposed to have an advanced intelligence, this doesn't really mesh with her character.

But, let's not get things out of proportion: it was one of a few crummy lines in an otherwise enjoyable movie, and Antje rocked.

I don't know, I understood it fine.

But yes, it's a minor point in a good movie and she was great. I hope to see more of her in the future.

Nice attempt, though there seems to be a prohibition on pirated material here, so be careful.

I thought she played the role brilliantly. My favourite female in the film.

I think we can all say that Faora was the dark horse of MOS, since she is clearly (and justifiably) proving to be a fan favourite.

Faora was the best thing in MOS (every line from her was like heaven sent)...

Russell Crowe was superb too... a distant second to Faora.. hoo hooo

I found her very threatening and very sexy at the same time, which I really loved.

The question is, Antje, can I get yo numba?

I wish there was more of her in the regular black suit.

Me three.

@TheFlamingCoCo

I'm totally on the Antje for Wonder Woman train. With her hair grown out, and the fact that Faora was wearing that huge mask that obscured most of her face for most of the film, I think most audiences would have no clue she was Faora in MoS.

Antje for Wonder Woman! Lets start the campaign now.

A few years back I made a video on YouTube, campaigning Bridget Regan as Wonder Woman. It had a fair amount of views. At least enough that I hope the actress became aware of it at some point.

Maybe it's time for a change of candidates, and a new video by me?

I'm open to ideas. As in... lines/quotes/pics I can put in.
