The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Anyone else worried about Sony rushing the Sinister Six?

I mean, Spidey's existence in his own little world is part of what makes him having his own cinematic world sound like a great idea to me.

Sony's just freaking greedy. There's no reason to try to build a universe around Spidey.

Any multi-billion dollar film studio is going to be greedy. I think it's silly to say, "there is no reason for them to build a universe around Spider-Man." It can't be as big as the MCU of course, but I see no reason why they can't do some spin-offs and ensemble films with villains.

Any chance that they go "Dark Avengers" with this movie?

It's possible. It's a risky direction to go but you can't do something revolutionary without taking risks.

Why is there no reason? He can't be part of the X-men universe, can't be part of the MCU. So why is there no reason to build a universe around him? Your comment makes zero sense dude.

I mean, there are just so many stories to be told. Why not keep it going instead of rebooting every decade?

Agreed.

My guess for Sinister Six lineup = Lizard, Goblin, Rhino, Doc Ock, Vulture, and Mysterio. Here's why: Sony doesn't care about the property.

Lizard, Goblin, and Rhino are easy selections because they have already been introduced in previous films and thus make it easy for the writers to throw them into the film with little character development.

Doc Ock and Vulture make sense because their harnesses were introduced in ASM2, their faces are visible - thus making the roles more appealing to the actors - and the effects can be more practical to offset cost of Spidey, Lizard, and Rhino VFX.

Mysterio will be the 6th guy because Sony will see the success that Whedon has with the Scarlet Witch next summer and will then immediately want to copy this idea. This (plus trending fan enthusiasm for Dr. Strange) will convince them that Mysterio is a "magic" guy with Sinister Six history that they can easily drop into the film with little to no character development like Rhino. They'll debut a killer-looking costume for whomever they cast, and will immediately proceed to write and direct him as some jokey fake guy who utters awful one-liners.

(I'm especially bummed about this possibility because I think Mysterio is one of the coolest, under-utilized supervillains in the MU.)

I'm worried about it. Especially since Webb has said many times he is likely gone after TASM3, and Garfield has said he may go as well. I am seeing TASM3 might be the Sinister Six film, and I think that has potential to rush it.

Didn't they already hire a director for the Sinister Six spin off? The guy who directed Cabin in the Woods I think?

I believe they did, but I still see no confirmation on when the spin-offs are coming.

Disagreed

Alright, let me amend that - Sony doesn't care about the history of the property. They do care about the revenue that ASM films generate, and they care about their investment. That makes total sense.

However, they don't seem to care about making a GOOD Spider-Man movie - only one that is good ENOUGH to be a PROFITABLE one.

Drew Goddard. Also affiliated with World War Z. I forget if he wrote or directed it though. Haven't seen it.

Edit :

Okay, here's his notable work.

Directed :

- The Cabin in the Woods

Written :
-
World War Z
- Cloverfield
- Lost

I think Sony needs to desperately find another cash cow franchise because they're gonna milk Spidey until people are sick of it.

I'm not saying a Sinister Six movie won't be cool, it could be awesome but Sony's whole "OH WE'RE GONNA DO THIS AND THIS AND VENOM AND KRAVEN WILL HAVE HIS OWN MOVIE AND SPIDERMAN 4 AND 5 ARE COMING," they're jumping the gun way too soon.

I'm aware that I'm exaggerating a bit but you know what I mean.

Being a guy that works at Sony, I agree. It's our biggest and only gun, really. Well you can also count the Bond franchise. That was the biggest grossing film we had in 2012. Second was Spider-Man.

I don't see how the eight Spider-Man movies over 16 years can be seen as milking but Captain America being in six movies over just 6 years and all in a row is seen as not.

Sony are simply using their available characters. That is no different than Fox using X-Men or Marvel Studios using The Avengers.

Why speed up the S6?

You can easily do 6 films about PP/SM. The Sinister Six is awesome but please please just focus on making great Spidey flicks and villains for the line up.

The problem with a SMCU is that supporters contradict themselves.
"Spider-Man doesn't need cross-overs, he's fine on his own"
"SMCU yes existing in a bigger universe=great idea Sony"

Why not just be apart of the biggest universe yet? The SMCU seems pretty similar to the MCU after the announcment of S6, Venom before ASM4.

Maybe Sony doesn't care. But the creative team has DEFINITELY shown their passion. It's very obvious that they want to make a good Spider-man movie. They care about the character.

Cabin in the Woods is a great film. I am sure the future SMCU movies will be good. I am down to see more films centered around the faces in Peters life.
