Assassin's Creed III was confirmed to have another ancestor assassin a few weeks ago. I'd love to see Ninja Assassins vs Samurai Templars.
Ninja are fairly obvious as Assassin territory; I couldn't make the same translation for Samurai as Templar, though. And I like medieval Japan and all, but it's been done to death in games for decades now. One of the neat things about AC is that they explore realms of history that are virtually untouched in gaming --- The Holy Land from the POV of both Crusader and Saracen; Renaissance Italy; Ottoman Turkey. I'd be willing to bet that ACIII continues that trend that bucks the trend, and we'll see someplace entirely new....not medieval Japan, WWII Europe, ancient Rome, or the modern world. Maybe Revolutionary/Napoleonic France, Russia on the eve of the Revolution, Moghul India, Imperial China....a place and a time rich in intrigue and politics, a place where assassins thrived, a place that other games haven't dared to go.
I think it kind of works (Templars being Samurai) because the Templars are usually in government positions, and the Samurai held high positions of power or directly worked with/for people who were in high positions of power. I think I remember from history class that they were basically warrior families, or like ancient Japan's special forces. Ninjas are more like mercenaries.
Now I'm not saying the Samurai necessarily have to be Templars, but it could work, or they could just be controlled by Templars.
I personally think it'll be 1780's France, though.
But there's less of a direct war between ninjas and samurais, unlike the eternal war of Assassins and Templars. And the traditional samurai code of bushido doesn't necessarily corellate with the Templar philosophy of order and science.
Revolutionary France was always strongly hinted at in the series, with direct allusions to symbols of the Revolution like the Phrygian cap (and some others that I can't remember right now).
If they did some sort of cross over with The Count of Monte Cristo, I would LOVE that. In the book, there are a lot of references to Assassin's and the whole Assassin/Templar war would fit in VERY well.
I've said it before but I'll say it again: I'd luh-huv to see ACIII take us to Revolutionary Paris (with an up and coming Bonaparte waiting in the wings), *and* move the action overseas to a young America. Paris and Philadelphia, with Washington DC in its first stages of construction. If anybody embodies the Templar philosophy and symbolism, it's the Founding Fathers.
