Assassin's Creed IV

In the same vein as the above question, are huge portions of the world blocked off like previous games in the series?

For the most part the map is wide open. I'm 50% through and still run into areas that say "this area is unavailable during this sequence".

So to be blunt, no, the whole of the world is not open to you.

When you're in a mission no but besides that yeah you can go anywhere you want at any time once you've acquired the hull upgrade in the mission for it which is pretty early in the game

So, the dumb/awesome justification for why you are in the animus this time around is probably enough to get me to check this game out, when I wasn't that excited for it previously.

I know it's a super small part of the game, but it's so meta that it's amazing, haha.

a Slightly late review

There are some areas that are just off limits for one reason or another. Like I said, I'm over 50% through the game and still run into areas that are blocked. This isn't during any kind of mission either.

Oh weird, I haven't run into anything like that

Yeah, I encountered that very briefly at one point. I think it's only a few key locations, like settlements or environments that are significant story locations.

I like the game a lot. So here are a few small gripes.
No rowboats or small boats you can use. The rowboats are just used to fast travel. You hit O and fast travel to your ship or across the map. AC II had gondolas and I expected canoes in AC3, but no. So this game being all about the sea I expected to be able to use a rowboat freely.

I still want a musket or rifle as a permanent weapon. Hunting with a rifle would be so much better. Not to mention better range. just picking a musket up for a limited use is not cutting it. If you climb anything you drop the musket.

Looting a pile of bodies in a previous AC, not sure which one though, was better. You could loot near a pile of bodies and it loots them all at once. Now you have to loot each body individually.

Oh and earlier I remarked that the legendary pirate outfit wasn't good. I was refering tithe picture in the shop. When I put it on it actually looked different and I liked it. I would really like a custom suit for single player. at least choosing various colors

It's funny you mention canoes in AC 3.

Anyone else remember this screenshot? So much for canoe travel.

Yea I wonder why they cut that? Guess they felt there wasn't a need for it?

If AC IV has done anything for me, it's highlight how empty and void of character AC 3 was. Such a vast, beautiful frontier and bloody nothing to do in it. Such a shameful waste of a great setting.

One thing I DO wish had carried over into AC IV though, is the homestead missions. I'd love to have something like that with the Jackdaw crew. It would have been great to get to know each member personally, you like you do Adewale. Really make the Jackdaw feel like it has some character and flare.

Another thing I'm noticing, from a story perspective, is the games are coming too reliant on historical figures. In the Ezio games, sure you had the villains and a few key people, but some of the strongest and most important characters were people like Claudia Auditore, La Volpe... People who were more fiction for the narrative than plucked from history. I wouldn't have minded if Edward had a few more close crew members etc to help him up. Or at least give Adewale more to do as his offsider.

Anyone try out the aveline story yet? Isn't she from the future, like the same time as connor ? Didn't play the vida game. Also I think Connor had better fighting and running. I liked the little cutscenes during a double counter attack with Connor. So far Edward doesn't counter 2 opponents at once.

I think the idea and look of a full blown pirate game is great but I just could never get into the animus future aspects in the AC franchise I could just not care less about those aspects in the game and that's sort of the raison d'etre for the whole franchises universe.

If there's one thing I hope is that maybe this game will spark other teams to take on pirate themed games, ideally i'd love rockstar to.

This has easily been my fav AC title so far. The only complaints I have are tiny nitpicks that I'm sure the majority of ppl don't notice. Would deff not mind them doing a "brotherhood" or "revelations" with Edward and this setting. Love the hell out of this pirate setting. Really don't see them topping this.

They could do Spain, France or China. Lots of ships between them. France seems like a no brainer since its ubisoft. I'm liking the Mayan stuff though. Maybe a Mayan or Aztec setting, leaving colonial times. Maybe some conquistadors.

Anyone know what community challenge 6 is? There is an outfit you unlock by doing it.

Wow they really butchered Desmond's character in this...

Loved the fact we've finally got an AC game with an actual ending. The game was great all over. I don't see the need for the modern day stuff to be FP and would've preferred it where third person with a random character.

Did anyone see those Starship Troopers-esque Abstergo propaganda videos on Altair, Ezio and Connor? They where hilarious.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The AC1/AC2 Altair/Ezio era focused on Mediterranean Europe and the Middle East (Italy, Turkey, Israel, Syria), and the AC3/AC4 era so far wants to focus on the Americas (New England, Louisiana, The Caribbean). So I think a Conquistador-era AC 4.5 would be a natural fit, with maybe a Spaniard (trained by Ezio Auditore, no less, who would be a contemporary of Hernando Cortez) Assassin who defects to the Aztecs and tries to teach them the Craft, and leads an uprising against the Templar Conquistadors.

Tenochtitlan would be an amazing city to explore --- it could easily be the biggest city to ever appear in AC (and easily dwarfed any city in Europe in size and population in the 16th century), and would be absolutely fascinating....lots of color and beauty and majesty, with exotic weaponry and warfare, coupled with horrific images of human sacrifice and true death cults.

Sounds fantastic! I still want a Victorian Era London game but, I really wouldn't be opposed to seeing Mayans or Aztecs.

Sounds great. Spaniard to Aztec or Mayan assassin would be really fun. Spaniard is the Master Assassin who trains a native either Aztec or Mayan to Fight Templars. starting a new brotherhood of natives. The armor and weapons would be so cool.

Finished the story tonight. Fantastic all the way through. Really loved the ending. Besides the Adewale DLC, which i can't wait for, i hope they do some sort of AC 4.5. Edward has been my favorite protagonist and i really don't see them topping this game. So much so that i have a feeling this could be my last AC purchase. Just don't see room for them to go anywhere but down.

uuugh can't wait to play. Just upgraded my processor so I can run this baby on max settings.

Too bad I have to wait through November. :/

Wow that's going to be a beautiful game to look at it.

My only complaint about this game is way too many tail this person missions. It seems like every other mission was tail this guy and then eavesdrop on his conversation and then infiltrate and kill him anyways or kill someone else. Eh it was just too much of the same mission

Agreed 100%

Luckily they were pretty easy and they game didn't make you work too hard, but yea, wish they woulda changed it up some way.

That sounds eerily like the first AC game (the tail mission every other mission, I mean).

I really like the Mayan suit. Looks like something from Thor, kind of like Odin's armor.
