I can only imagine this pitch to the board.

"So, we want to build a console, with digital purchases in mind."
"The hard drive is only 500 GB?"
"Yes."
"And it can't be upgraded."
"Right."
"So it can only hold about 20 games?"
"Assuming we don't let people also store movies on it, in which case it would be even less. Plus games will only get bigger, so...."
"So people will have to think twice about buying stuff digitally, since they only have so much room?"
"Exactly."
"And you want to call it the Xbox One?"
"Yes, and it has to be hooked up to the internet at all time."
"Well, it still sounds better than Windows 8."

I really don't think HDD size is an issue. Externals aren't that expensive.. I think 4TB is less expensive than the 500gb HDD add on that I bought for my 360.

People act like MS screwed over X1 owners as if there is no way to expand HDD space when things get full. The fact they went and allowed for external HDDs makes this entire issue a moot point

It really is. I feel people are grasping at straws now when it comes to bashing the X1.. Meanwhile Sony has a 500gb HDD and bundles too...

Can you use external harddrives with the PS4?

EDIT: Apparently not. Now I don't understand bashing XB at all on the HDD space issue... PS4 has 500GB bundles, and although they allow replacing the HDD with a bigger one while XB1 does not, the fact that the XB1 supports oob external harddrives means you could essentially have an infinite amount of storage (through the use of RAID enclosures).

It could be that the HDD space is one of a looong line of problems with the X1, while the PS4 has had significantly less issues. The PS4, while not supporting external hard drives, allows you to replace the internal one while Microsoft says you can do the same, but you have to use THEIR licensed HDD, which is grossly overpriced.

huh? You can use any external HDD for the X1.. Also the long line of X1 problems IMHO are fluffed up by gamers and mostly consist of 1080 vs 900 p.

I have both and would easily take my X1 over my PS4 currently.

So exactly how much does that grossly overpriced MS licensed HDD for the X1 cost?

:shr:

X1 ability to use external drives > PS4 only able to use internal drives and with some (although basic) technical knowledge.

And largely fluffed by Kotaku which does nothing but ****-ride the PS4. Even the 900p argument is more an issue with dev's being lazy than the X1. They have deals with Sony to create games on Sony platforms, resulting in poor rendering on the X1 if they just port it, instead of doing a proper game-export specifically fitted for the X1.

AC is a perfect example of a game backed by Sony that gets lazy when porting to Xbox and blames it on the console.

It's the same thing as doing a ****** conversion from NTSC to PAL and blaming it on the European broadcast standard instead of just spending the extra time/money to do the conversion with a teranex and have a proper presentation of your video in Europe.

Huh? This game has been lying in MS' bed
The AC games have been dev'd using a Sony console since AC2, and almost all console-exclusive rewards throughout the franchise have been on the PS3. I don't know for certain which console they used to dev' ACU, but I feel like it was dev'd on a PC like Watch Dogs was (which let's not forget, was toned down on the PC for console releases, reportedly at the demand of Sony).

Yeah Sony and AC had to have had a bad break up. They were super besties last gen.

That was past games, not Unity. To bring up the whole 900p argument and say the devs are too lazy to do better on the X1 bc the game is being backed by Sony, is false and makes no sense. Ubisoft has been closely linked with MS ever since this game was announced. Regardless of what may have been done in the previous years, there is no indication that Sony is getting any preferential treatment here, which isn't too surprising given how visible Ubisoft has been with MS in terms of promoting the game

No I think he was saying the ports of the past AC games on 360 were substandard due to Ubisoft being "in bed" with Sony at the time.. At least that's what I'm getting. Either way the whole 900p thing was (I use was because its gonna be patched) lazy on Ubisofts end because every other dev out there can get 1080/60 on the X1.

But AC ports weren't substandard on the 360. The only advantage the PS3 versions had was extra content but on a technical level, they were near identical. The sentence I quoted, came right after mentioning 900p, which was a HUGE issue among the gaming community just recently in reference to Unity. He specifically states X1 and talks about the laziness when it comes to porting to the system and then cites AC as a perfect example of that.

and I wouldnt say every other dev can get 1080/60 on the X1. Many still struggle with that

Those struggles will go away. Look at the time devs had with the Cell. The PS3 was apparently "doomed to fail" within the first year. Now it's MS and the P's.

That's right. I was thinking of the 360.

Yeah the 360's HDDs were stupid. I think I paid near 300 for my 500gb. Which is why grabbing a 4tb external for 100 is... Nothing next to that, lol.

speaking of 900p, today, Bioware did another stream of DAI.

I looked at it briefly and thought the graphics looked pretty good. figured they were running the PC version using Xbox controls.

but then I found out they were showing the X1 version.

so, if the X1 version is running at 900p, then it looked pretty damn good to me.

I'm sure Unity will look good, too.

and on the subject of internal vs external drives, I used to be in the internal camp. but now I've come around to how much easier and more convenient it is to use an external drive.

true, I still wish the X1 offered the option to replace the internal drive. but plugging in a small, portable 2tb external drive is a heck of a lot more convenient than opening up your console, unscrewing stuff, worrying if the internal drive is compatible, etc.

Dude I've worked with, on and around TV's for 10 years. You're not gonna notice 900p. It's honestly a drop in the bucket. Now 720 vs 1080 you'd notice.. But hardly anything is 720 anymore. Again tho I don't think the problem was it being 1080.. It was that Ubi was just so damn lazy about it and then the excuses given.. Wow.

If I get Unity and DA.. I will get them both for my X1.
