Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

These movies take a really long time to make. They're not going to wait two more years until Avatar 3 is released to start production on the other two. The plan was to see how 2 would perform and then do the rest back-to-back to bank on the franchise's momentum. The Way of Water is making amazing numbers so I'm guessing production for the sequels will go full steam ahead at some point this year.

Thinking that 2+billions is in any way disappointing or concerning numbers is absurd. The movie is overperforming, exceeding everyone's expectations once again. Of course it won't make 3 billion dollars. No one in their right minds was expecting it to surpass the first film, even more so with no Russia and in a post covid world.

The original film was a phenomenon that you can't replicate. That doesn't mean that the franchise is in decline. In that sense the MCU will always be dropping from now on, because, realistically, no film will ever reach Endgame numbers again and Disney should be worried. And yet they still are investing full time on Marvel. Each of their films cost 250 millions this year. It doesn't seem like they're worried over budget reasons for future movies at all. And to be fair, a big part of Avatar 2's ballooned budget was due to covid.

The truth on the matter is that these movies don't need to make impossible numbers like the first one. As long as they're making profit, the studio will be more than satisfied. Even if one was to lose some money it is still a long term investment on their part. They certainly wouldn't want to compromise their relationship with Hollywood's biggest piggy bank, James Cameron. And right now it seems like the smartest choice.

Nobody is arguing that the film isn't massively successful, nor did anyone say there won't be more Avatar movies LMAO...

The discussion is about cost to profit ratio, which is low for a film performing at this level. And that can be directly attributed to the production & marketing budgets.

I'll say it again. If Avatar 3 shows further signs of box office erosion - and based on historical precedent that's not only possible but probable - Cameron won't be allowed by Disney to spend as much as he damn well pleases for the fourth and fifth installments. The man as much as said so himself in the article that prompted this entire conversation.

You read it here first :D

I think Cameron owns the avatar IP through Lightstorm Entertainment company and Disney is only a distributor. If this is true Cameron can take avatar to other studios.

Good point. I know that Lightstorm is the producer but I believe the IP itself is owned by 20th Century Studios (Disney).

"Lightstorm Entertainment is an American independent production company founded in 1990 by filmmaker James Cameron and producer Lawrence Kasanoff. The majority of its films have been distributed and owned by 20th Century Studios. It has produced several films including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, Titanic, Alita: Battle Angel and Avatar film series; Cameron has employed other filmmakers to produce and direct films under the Lightstorm banner."

This suggests to me that Cameron can't just take the Avatar franchise to another studio, or even if he could there would be legal issues involved that could take years in court to iron out...

Who knows...

Haha, wow. Just cruising to these huge numbers. Now we get to see if the rest of the run with everyone back will still have unusual legs or start reverting to the normality of standard hood blockbuster legs.

Disney is going to make 4 and 5. It is currently their only movie that they can get into China. The economics of movie making is much more complicated than profit/loss. Disney also has a whole ass theme park based on Avatar. They are going to want to keep that as relevant as possible.

I didn’t know anything about this theme park! Which country is it in? Will have to look that up.

It's at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I visited it a couple years ago and had a blast. It's insanely cool.

The Flight Of Passage ride is by far the most state of the art ride I've ever been on. You're literally on Pandora, flying on a Banshee. It's pretty next level.

It was easily the most popular area when I was there. The lines were insanely long.

Sounds great! Thanks for the info.

Will check out some videos.

So $45m estimate for this weekend. That’s no.3 all time for 4th weekend if it holds. Slightly ahead of Maverick and $5m down from the first film. American Sniper opened wide later so I don’t use that as a comparison.

Also, Lightstorm holds the Avatar copyright. Not Disney. Same goes for Alita: Battle Angel and Terminator (w/Skydance).

Daaamn. That’s not a normal drop off whatsoever. 700 million domestic might be in play. o_O

I also remembered the US dollar is incredibly strong right now. It would’ve made even more money with better exchange rates.

imagine this movie with more favorable exchange rates, Russia/Ukraine markets, and a covid free China. It could’ve come close to the first movie!!!!
