Warner Bros. Games Montreal has taken the mantle of the bat from Rocksteady Studios this time around for Batman: Arkham Origins. WB Montreal has full access to Rocksteady's custom modified Unreal engine to capture the look and feel of the Arkhamverse. As the title suggests, the game takes place years before both of the previous Arkham titles when a young, unrefined Batman encounters many supervillains for the first time.

On our full cover image below, fans will recognize the assassin Deathstroke, who appears for the very first time in a core Arkham game.
Heading up the vision for Arkham Origins is creative director Eric Holmes, known for being the lead designer of open world action hits The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype. A self-professed lover of comics, Holmes even wrote the miniseries Transformers: Megatron Origin for IDW.
Gamers won't have to wait long to experience Batman's lastest adventure. Batman: Arkham Origins releases October 25, 2013 on Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Story

- Takes place on Christmas Eve
- Years before the previous two games
- Mob boss Black Mask will give a fortune for Batman’s head
- Top assassins and supervillains from the DC Comics universe are out to get Batman
- Cops on the take from the mob join the manhunt as well
- Batman needs to outsmart his enemies, find out why Black Mask wants him dead, and prove to what good cops that he’s on their side

General

- Porting Arkham City to Wii U let the team get familiar with Unreal 3
- Doing a prequel lets the team carve a unique territory if Rockstar were to move the Arkham timeline ahead down the road
- Rocksteady’s project is tightly under wraps
- Younger Batman also “gives us the opportunity to refresh things a bit”
- Combat system still in place
- Will have “new layers, new opportunities, and new tactics”
- New enemy types
- Batman not as finely honed as in the previous games
- Won’t control the Batwing directly
- Batwing will figure into story sequences and acts as a universe-appropriate form of fast travel
- Has the traditional predator mode in which players swing from perch to perch, glide kick, string guys upside-down, etc.
- New remote claw that is like the grappler in Just Cause 2
- Batman targets two objects and fires out a claw
- This hooks into the first object and launches another claw and rope to the second object
- Can then pull the two objects together
- Use this to knock enemies together, slam heavy objects into foes, string objects or people under a perch
- Can string up an explosive barrel under a perch, lure enemies with a sonic batarang, then cut the rope with a normal batarang, dropping the explosive on their heads
- Team knows Black Mask isn’t the most popular villain
- Old Gotham is only half of the game world
- Another new entire is across the bridge called New Gotham
- New Gotham is classier and has much taller skyscrapers
- New zone doubles the size of the game world
- Players can dismantle the hacked tower network
- Towers emit a jamming signal that prevents the Batwing from flying into the area, meaning no fast travel
- It also halts Batman’s sensors from placing points of interest on the map
- Taking down the towers are varied and require all of Batman’s navigation, puzzle solving, and combat skills
- Some can be taken down quickly, others must be returned to later with an upgrade
- “Crime in Progress”: ex – saving some cops from a group of thugs, rescuing a snitch from being tossed off a roof
- Activities give Batman a chance for experience point bonuses
- Completing side quests also contributes to the GCPD’s understanding and appreciation of Batman
- They will begin to know Batman and which side he stands on based on how much you take on the optional missions
- Most Wanted system gives players a chance to go after villains outside of the core storyline
- These optional side missions can be tackled when you discover them
- Many optional missions offer upgrades
- Batman’s butler Alfred may notice that he had a tough time in that situation and give him a new gadget
- Dark Knight system is slightly more behind the scenes, though it’s still important
- Dark Knight system provides a lengthy string of tasks that slowly goes up in difficulty as the game progresses
- The team wants to avoid boring tutorials while still training players to be masters of predator and combat systems
- Complete a certain number of counters or silent takedowns to receive XP rewards or a specific upgrade
- Dark Knight system doesn’t replace challenge mode
- Team wants to make challenges more meaningful

Game demo

- Takes place about an hour into the game
- Batman is perched above Jezebel plaza
- Black Mask’s assassins have stirred up the local thugs
- No towering walls keeping villains in check and many citizens call Arkham City home since there isn’t a prison
- Amusement Mile hasn’t been flooded
- Batman is looking to find out why Black Mask is trying to kill him
- Batman decides to go to the party to track down Penguin, who hears about everything
- Eventually, Penguin gives some intel on a murder at Lacey Towers
- Claw grips Batman’s ankle and drags him out of the room before he can finish his questioning
- Batman reaches for the door, but his arm is stomped by a mysterious figure
- Batman ends up suspended upside-down from the rafters
- Deathstroke circles Batman with a drawn sword
- Batman blocks and disarms Deathstroke, using the sword to cut himself free
- Thanks to Penguin’s tip, Batman goes to Lacey Towers
- The cops say it’s a double homicide
- One victim is supposedly Black Mask
- Inside the apartment, Batman sees Black Mask’s girlfriend strung up on a chandelier
- Black Mask’s assumed body is laying face up across the room
- Batman goes into first-person detective vision to examine the situation

That was fast, a bit slower than I expected, but pretty fast

So some of you seem stoked for this despite it not being made by Rocksteady...is there something/s you all know about this that you could let me know that's making you hyped regardless. I mean I really want to have high hopes for this but I dunno... :/

Read the GameInformer article (in the magazine), in its entirety; that's all it took for me.

I think this has the potential to be even better than Arkham City.

Well, I just keep reminding myself that Rocksteady was pretty unknown, before they knocked it out of the park with Arkham Asylum. And the game's writing already started to slip with Arkham City, so I'm not going to pretend that Dini is irreplaceable.

WB Montreal seems to have hunted down many talented people in the gaming biz, they've got all of Rocksteady's tech, so the game will look at least as good as the last two games, and the premise of the game simply sounds fantastic.

I'm pretty optimistic they'll deliver a good game.

well Sheffton hill said that during city on attack of the show durin E3 and that was to please fans cause they wanted to put in multiplayer and they made nightwing and the others of cat woman and robin with that in mind, but they chose story that's all fine. cause they weren't used to making co-op and multplayer and they needed time to learn how to do so. but the point is they had plans for it already. eventually and they will have to have it done on one of the games installments be it the third sequel or the third game even if it's prequel. and they do have enouh money to pull off resource wise cause this is the larger wb game studio's

so please let them learn how to do so.

"Rob the bank and evade batman"

You have to set the explosives to the bank vault etc etc. Maybe add some trophies too.

A gateway chase would be fun too
I likes how you think

ok that's too early to say. we'll see. That looks perfect spuzz

That's saying a lot coming from me... a crazed Catwoman fan.

I was hyped after the seeing some pictures but reading up it I hope it does. (I still love AA & AC though.

I don't know if it'll be better than Arkham City. But, I'd be happy if it's as good or almost as good.

I feel like there's a good enough blueprint left by Rocksteady, that if Origins follows it enough (ie: the exact same combat) while adding some things to the mix, that I'd be happy.

I'm not expecting a train wreck, though. That would be surprising.

We need a trailer though so I can watch it over and over to see what it will look like.

That's exactly what's happening. They're even re-using Old Gotham (Arkham City).

I can't wait to see those tall buildings in New Gotham!!! :wow:

E3, I'm guessing

Story wise it wouldn't be hard to pass Arkham City, that was such a disappointment factor.

I will always like AA best you felt like a caged animal unlike City.

Interesting developments regarding the latest rumours. It could have potential, but I'll reserve judgement until I see how it turns out.

But, I wish the sequel to AC was a court of owls/night of owls game.

That could be interesting. Though I hope they go with Scarecrow like they teased. Plus I'd like to see Hush appear as well as a sidestory and not just be a teaser of sorts like AC was.

Did you read every collected info two posts above you?

RS has their hands full with the sequel!

they told the daily post they were working on justice league game. now until they say other wise please stop telling others that please. other wise they 'll be alot of disappointment when it turn's out there was no sequel by them, when they are done with what every they are working on. The only people that say they are working on the sequel are posters like you when they have said otherwise. and that's not good to keep seeing this be said. it's one thing to hope. and there's nothing wrong with that. But until they say so just lay off that for bit.
