Batman: Arkham Origins - Part 2

How many actors have played both the Joker and Batman? Is Troy Baker the only one?

Kevin Michael Richardson has played both characters... The Joker on The Batman and Batman on various DC Nation shorts.

Jeff Bennett also played The Joker on Batman: The Brave and the Bold and a Michael Keaton-esque Batman on Tiny Toons.

I love Roger Craig Smith as Batman. He needs to be Batman a lot more. Like permanently from now. Although he's not a very good replacement for Conroy in this series because he sounds nothing like him nor does he sound younger. From the few very short clips we have seen from him, it sounds like he has some actual genuine emotion in his voice. Something Conroy was seriously lacking in these games although in fairness to him Batman was written horribly in these 2 games. His lines were often cringeworthy, they're trying to hard to make him sound badass

I think it also has a lot to do with the direction. Origins Batman seems to be more hot tempered, angrier. Alone the way the model is animated during cutscenes, there is just way more emotional range in his facial expressions. Batman in Arkham Asylum/City, was always cold, distant, with a not give a crap attitude, and there was really nothing that shook him up in the game. And I guess when your in-game model shows barely any emotion, it's difficult to apply any emotion yourself. Might probably have been even more jarring, if Batman in-game looks completely cold, yet his voice actor tries to give him some emotional range, that you just can't see expressed in the character itself.

Am I making any sense?

Oh yeah I agree. It's hard for Conroy to give a good performance when they gave him nothing to do. Batman had so much bad dialogue it was unbelievable. I can't count how many times were I shook my head at the lines he was saying.

I totally agree...

The Arkham games have done more damage to Conroy's reputation than anything else in the past few years. Batman dialogue was downright awful at times. He tried his best but there was no saving some of those lines.

Personally I'm throwing the blame at Paul Crocker as opposed to Paul Dini for that.

Batman has a better model and (by the sounds of it) personality in Origins giving Roger Craig Smith alot more to work with than Conroy ever did.

My problem with the Conroy thing is just that people seem to think it's him or nothing... I don't think one actor should have the monopoly on any character. I mean, I've grown so used to Steve Blum ALWAYS playing Wolverine, I'd be thrilled to hear someone else play him. Not because I don't like Steve Blum but because I've grown so used to that version, it's time for a refresh.

Younger Batman is the perfect opportunity to try out another voice actor. And I agree about Conroy in Arkham City. I love the way he sounds urgent but there was a total lack of emotion in his voice at key times that sounded odd... Like when he tells Alfred that Strange knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, he doesn't sound panicked or ANYTHING. Just matter of fact. It sounds odd at times. I don't think that would work for a younger, inexperienced Batman.

I know what you mean. People do the same with Hamill/Joker. I love Hamill as the Joker as much as the next person, but he can't play him forever.

From what I've seen in that trailer, Baker does a great job. It sounds like Hamill's Joker but a few years younger. If I didn't know it wasn't Hamill, I honestly wouldn't have thought it was someone else. Just that he was trying a slightly different approach at the voice.

But regardless of how good another VA does Joker there always will be some biased people saying it's not good enough.

In response to a question about Black Mask being playable:

that's too bad. I don't know what Black Mask would have brought to the table but the more characters the better

Yeah as much as we love Dini, guy doesn't know how to write a good video game story

Ok not that I care too much, and I wont after this. But which of the two were senor for the Arkham series as head writer? and who had final say besides the creative director / designer ? of which says what stays and goes after the writers done?

cause who ever was senor writer was supposed to be doing this kind of thing
example purpose only

right? it's the "designer" that has final say from what I/ most know of how this process works. and that's according to the writers of these games that are made.

He's been overall very successful imo, but it also certainly has noticeable room for improvement. Reminds me a bit of Goyer in that it's overall a very cool story, but the dialogue is sometimes straight up bad and takes you out of it. Still I definitely had great experiences with both game stories. Wouldn't be against a new mind working on it though.

That's a lot of blind bias right there.

Yeah, it's tiresome how people have to safeguard Paul Dini from critism and blame everything on Sefton Hill and Paul Crocker, all are to blame really whetever it's the quality of the story or dialogue.

Actually if any did bother to answer or quote I was about to say the latter of what you said. But still those that have final word on what pass's in the game are the final word too. It was unfortunately what the head of the Mass effect series was/is dissed for and I find that annoying at times, but I under stand why some times also. especially when the other writers told the press what he told to them to have as ending when he sat down with the head writer and told them what he wanted out. which set that stupidness off.

In this case it's more then one person at fault. but for the most part I don't have the same issue of trying to find some one to blame for a flat performance which may also be due to bad script that could have been worked on by a go over. And there must have been a go over with the lead designer..

If Casey Hudson did it with his head writer for mass effect 3 (and I'm sure he did the same with the rest of the series prior to that ) that lead to his unfortunate mistake that had people sending unnecessary death threats etc cause of how it ended. I'm sure it's the norm for all other franchises with other studio's. same thing that was kinda said with recent DMC too. he said ok to every new thing that was done with that ip(fans didn't take to it.) And not every one is always going have a hit as that video I put up said that same writer for "Rachet and clank" series wise he wrote for Fuse formerly over strike. Who knows what really happened there?

I'm completely aware of how writing process works in studios, still, you don't think it's abit funny how Batman fans give all the positive credit to Paul Dini, but when it's some dialogue they deem bad, they give all negative points to Paul Crocker and Sefton Hill?

I did say their all to blame didn't I? We just don't what fully happened. I don't care the argue who did what? I rather the people involved them selves set things straight for us. what I Do know of Dini right now. He's working for marvel as they stated in their marvel.com live stream During SDCC and he's on their animated and possible video games works as well. what he'll be working has yet to be said. Besides as I said there's been worse with other ips of other studios of resent. Not an Excuse just saying.
