Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 4

Hummmmmm interesting. A young batman isn't much on our minds then.

Batman has always seemed older to me too, 30s and 40s. I guess it is because he has mentored younger heroes. Even in the Superfriends cartoon and the 60s TV show he seemed like an older guy, always lecturing Robin! Plus Bruce Wayne is often portrayed as the bachelor who won't settle down, so he's getting older and still not marrying. Also being a businessman to a huge corporation...I do find younger portrayals refreshing though, like Bale and even "The Batman" animated show.

I've started considering Tom Pelphrey for the part lately. He has elevated mediocre writing on Iron Fist for two seasons now, but the thing he really impressed me in was the TV series Banshee. He played a former skinhead who tried to atone for his sins by becoming a Deputy and trying to bring down his former gang. Pelphrey showed some real intensity and rage, coupled with a vulnerability that I think would work well for Batman.

Interesting suggestion. He was one of the best parts (well, one of two good parts, the other being Jessica Henwick) of Iron Fist season 1. Speaking of Banshee, what about the lead guy (Anthony Starr) for Batman?

I have only seen Starr in Banshee, so I can't really judge his acting range, but he was good in it so I wouldn't be against it. He had a cool low-key intensity about him.

Now that’s one suggestion I could really get behind.

All we've heard is that WB asked for mock-ups of him in the cowl a few months ago.

Taking into account what he already said about the "mysterious" actor in question (i.e., he's something of a surprising or left-field choice for Batman given his age and additional factors despite his also being a popular fancast for other DC roles), I've gotta once again echo Batfan5191's sentiments. This is Hamm.

Jon Hamm said in an interview today that he'd be interested in the role!

Ok, THAT's intriguing, because he usually has expressed the opposite in past interviews.

And I'm not commenting on Kit Harington because that ain't ever happening, lmao.

I rather have Hamm as Superman, but he wont be either.

I feel like filmclickbait covered the Hamm News pretty succinctly...

Sam Heughan from Outlander struck as someone who could take over from Cavill, but he might also make a decent Batman.

Yeah, I think he'd be a good fit for either one. Though I have no idea how good his American accent is.

I still want him for He-Man though. Dude looks like he was born to play that role.

My counter to that would be that Joaquin Phoenix said he never had any discussions about the Joker role, and Paul Rudd said “it’s All rumors, man!” Days before being cast as Ant-Man.

Not saying that it’s a sure thing or even likely, just that it’s interesting that he flipped his tone on superhero moves dramatically within the last year, and couple that with earlier rumors that Jon was campaigning hard for it behind the scenes AND MFR from Revenge of the Fans mentioned there was a name he was hearing that more closely fit the “Affleck mold” and was someone who had been repeatedly fancast in DC movies. Jon fits the bill IMO!

I always imagine a Batman with a Robin or Batgirl at his side. Since he acts as a father figure to at least Robin, that puts him at around 30. That said: I have zero issues with a younger Batman.

The potential problem with Hamm is the exact same problem we ended up encountering with Affleck: longevity and commitment. Hamm is 47 now. He'll be 48 by the time this movie starts shooting, best case scenario. Are we really getting a trilogy out of him, or would his hiring signal to us that any plans for a trilogy are no longer in the cards? My thoughts on this remain unchanged. I'd rather have a new series of Batman films. If hiring an older actor prohibits that, then I'd much rather they skew younger.

Personally, I have zero problems with a mid-late 40s Batman.

Just not sure Hamm's the guy, in any case. As Bruce? Totally. Not sure he's remotely ideal for the other side of that coin though.

Somehow don't even buy he's actually a contender, it's really seemed from every rumor from every source so far that Matt's wanting to go relatively young for it.

Agreed! Jon Hamm has just always been my personal choice for the role ever since TDKRises days, so if any whiff of that comes around I can't help but be excited!

I like Hamm a lot as an actor but I've never been able to see him as Batman. Maybe as Superman... 10-15 years ago.

I'd chop off my left pinky to see in Hamm in the role in a serious noir-driven Batman movie. That is literally my dream. And when I think of Batman, I think of BTAS. To me, that's a Batman who is well into his 40s. Batman to me is Atticus Finch meets Sherlock Holmes meets Don Draper. So... yeah, that's Jon Hamm to me (for whom Ethan Peck would be a more than suitable younger version of). Seems like Alex Ross agrees...

I love Alex Ross but didn't he also say Jon Hamm should be Captain America and Tom Welling should be cast as Superman in a movie? I don't put a lot of stock in his casting ideas.

Anyway, I would probably get on board with Hamm as Batman but I just think he's too old for it now.

I thought Ross based all his work on Patrick Warburton.

I got the impression that it's a couple of different factors that has him confused, so you might still be on the right track. We shall see.

Also, here's the podcast if interested. He talks about Batman, and later Superman right at the beginning.

Hmm... interesting.
