Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread

Probably depends on the actor, but I can't imagine it would be "Okay, New Batman? New Alfred and Gordon too!" If Pat Hingle and Michael Gough could span three different Batmen and Judi Dench could be M to two different Bonds, I don't think they have to go just because there's a new actor under the cowl.

Most popular picks, ranked:

Josh Brolin
Michael Fassbender
Jon Hamm
Oscar Isaac
Ryan Gosling
Jake Gyllenhaal
Armie Hammer

Okay, Brolin isn't popular. But he should be. :woot:

Brolin's still got more Cable and Thanos ahead of him, I doubt he'd be up for this.

Fassbender also has more Magneto probably. At least one more? And one or two from the Alien franchise. He's going to be hard to lock down. Oscar is busy with Star Wars probably around the time they want to get this started. Too short and doesn't scream Bruce to me. Hamm and Brolin are too old. Hamm wouldn't be a good Batman but a good Bruce. Brolin is too busy and turned the role down a few years ago. Gosling works well but there's no way he's signing a multiple film deal for something he only might be interested in.

Hammer and Gyllenhaal are the only real choices in my opinion. One is the safe choice that I'm fine with. The other is a jackpot choice that is edgy and almost guarantees something classic.

Brolin, absolutely not. It's even more of an age issue than Affleck. Same with Jon Hamm. Why is anybody bringing up Oscar Isaac? Absolutely nothing about him says "Batman"; he's not white, too short. Hammer could be okay, but the only exposure I have to him is The Social Network. Certainly ten years younger it feels like he would have been totally wrong for the role when he was originally cast. Fassbender already has too much of an identity as Magneto to go to a hero role, although he probably would have been an okay choice if he hadn't done that role.

Finally some sense.

I think Oscar Isaac would make a phenomenal Batman. His Guatemalan ethnicity is besides the point. His skin color isn't so different from caucasian that it'd be as drastic a change as casting someone like Idris Elba as Bruce Wayne. Likewise, height is something that can easily be worked around via camera tricks. Like Gyllenhaal, Isaac has a certain gravitas and electricity about him as an actor that I think would benefit him tremendously in the role.

That said, I completely agree with you on your points against Brolin, Hamm and Fassbender.

I'd be okay with Hammer too, but from the looks of it, I'm guessing Hammer's already been cast for another role of some sort in the DCEU. But yeah, I completely agree with you on Gyllenhaal. He'd bring something tremendously special if cast as Batman.

After seeing JL, I don't even want to a single second of Batfleck anymore. I've changed my tune completely on any semblance of a segue into a recast.

Give Reeves his Batman franchise and close him off from the rest of this universe. Start off brand spankin' new. I'd even risk Margot and Simmons if this assures the series' individuality.

After seeing JL, i would be fine with recast. I want reeves trilogy to be completely seperate and brand new. Bvs was incredible and i did not want to recast but JL made me okay with recast.

Affleck wasnt as good this time. I want to see what reeves would do without any requirements. Let him do whatever he wants. His apes movies are spectacular.

Hahahahah great minds think a like.

Was it how the character was written or did Affleck turn in an apathetic performance?

Yeesh, talk about mirror sentiments! Yeah man, I'm so done with Batfleck. I really do appreciate his contributions to BvS, but after all this outside drama, his clear lack of enthusiasm, and this lackluster turn in JL...I'm ready to wash my hands of it all.

No looking back!

More so the former, which probably informed the latter. I wouldn't go as far to say as he sleepwalked through the role, but he wasn't given much to work with and it shows.

There were two scenes made for laughs which broke the camel's back. Nothing momentous in content, but the presentation and the audacity to relegate the character to that...I genuinely felt offended as a Batfan.

I genuinely asked myself, "what would Keaton and Bale think of what you just did in this cowl, Ben?"

:funny:

I know exactly what you are talking about. Especially those two sequences

I completely 100% agree.

How would you assess the performance against Bale in TDK? Many say that he phoned it in That flick.

It's better have a Bruce Wayne Batman who is too old instead of one who is too young.

and Arm & Hammer is too tall.

Who wants a Batman who towers over Superman?

Bale is leagues better. I've been way too harsh on him before. I recently watched TDK again after years of not viewing it at all...he's damn solid for what the part asks. My problems with him are more so in his approach to the character (as an everyman) and that annoying growl. But those are admittedly huge nitpicks and are a luxury thanks to everything else in those films being so AAA.

Nothing Bale did (in TDK anyway) made me question his integrity like I saw with Ben in the aforementioned sequences. I really wish I could talk about them, because it is so miniscule on paper. But it really set me off as someone who loves this legacy.

Well, who knows at this point if Reeves' Batman will even interact with Superman. I doubt Supes will show up in the Batman solo films and it might be a long time before we see another JL film.

But I don't want Hammer either. He's a decent actor but (IMO) he fits better into the Superman/Shazam superhero archetype. He'd be better as Adam Warlock or Apollo (The Authority).

I always got the impression that Bale did a generally good job in TDK. The issue was more that TDK was where Nolan really went overboard with Bale's Batgrowl. It's not as top-notch as Bale's performance was in Batman Begins, but he hardly phones it in either.

Jim Caviezel is possible but not for how many films they want to do. Isn't he older than Affleck, like 50 or something? Also I've never been a fan. He's always been extremely one note and boring to me as an actor.

Haha, I don't really get that at all, but to each their own I guess.

And the age thing, I dunno, only 4 years older than Affleck and 3 older than Armitage. If they want to skew to a younger interpretation than Affleck's going forward, fine, but I dunno that 49's gonna make that much difference than 45, for "Affleck's version" of Bats in the DC verse.

Dude nails the "cold, driven, focused, lonely damaged guy" vibe though.

The Jake news is pretty interesting, assuming it's true. Love the guy as an actor, he certainly has the chops for it, and the look. Not sure I'm loving the idea of a Gyllenhaal Batman though, don't know why. Might be the "big name" thing again, like Affleck, or the jarring nature of jumping from Affleck's grizzled veteran dude who's been through so much horrible crap in his career so far to...36 year old (and looking younger than that) Gyllenhaal.

If it was a totally new, fresh take, unassociated with the Snyder stuff so far, I'd say hell yeah. Just seems a little odd at this point in the game. Though yeah, can totally buy he's someone Reeves would have in mind for it, seems the type.

So wow, he would have only been 24 when testing for Batman Begins then? Guess that would have fit just fine for that version though, makes sense.

And if Gyllenhaal's indeed in consideration, what would this say about the DC verse going forward? Maybe that they're potentially...well, not "rebooting" things, but might be doing a sort of soft-reset on things and changing up dynamics and tone going forward? Might be for the best to just let Matt off the leash and do things entirely his way, not worry too much about trying to fit things in with what's come before with Affleck. Jake would work way better in that type of context, like the broader events of the DC verse so far have happened, but they're turning a blind eye to the details and sort of veering in another direction going forward.

Basically: Jake for Bats, totally. Jake for AFFLECK'S Bats? Ehh, that's going to be a little irritating. Make it a whole new beast, but just acknowledging the stuff so far in broad general terms.

EDIT: Height-wise, 6'0" seems fine too. Wasn't that what Bale was? *Shrugs* Not sure it's that valid a complaint, Affleck's been the only guy of comics-Bruce height we've had so far, it doesn't seem to matter.

Go watch the party scene again. Look at how his manner and performance completely alters from playboy Bruce to ‘real Bruce’ through the shotgun dismantling sequence. Not phoned in. Subtle.

The bat voice is canned arse though. He even admits that himself.

I feel like Gyleenhaal is just more of the same. Does every batman have to be white? Surely if you wanted to see a white batman you could just see the last ten guys who got the job

Jake G. wouldn't be a bad pick. He's younger and closer in age to the rest of the League members which is a good thing and he's a good actor.

The dude got ripped for Southpaw so he can get the physique down

Batman comes from old money. It makes sense why he would be a white boy.
