I don't think it needed to be a big case. Look at the pilot. Just a very generic case. As was episode 2 and the second episode of the second series. All based around fairly simple cases with character moments woven in, for example with Hounds you had that great bit in the Inn with Sherlock slowly going crazy and declaring Watson wasn't his friend. I think back on S2 with fond memories off great overall episodes.
So far with S3 I'm thinking back to great moments not necessarily strong episodes. I sound far harsher than I'm meaning as I do really really like S3 I'd give episode 1 8/10 and episode 2 9.5/10. In both episodes though it's lost that element of intrigue. There's no mystery really so far. Or ohhhh how are they gonna solve/get out of this? As all those things have been pushed aside. Like I said the majority of these episodes have just been the characters... doing stuff. Strangely enough that's exactly how I feel with Doctor Who's last few episodes. I know Moffat likely has barely any inclusion with the last two episodes but he will have some, some dialogue in particular has screamed Moffat. But in DW there's been barely any plot. Things have just happened. And so far I'd say the same for this season.
Except the overall writing, acting and production has been stellar and the final product still highly watchable.

Is anyone here following the blog of John Watson website? The last entry chronicling their last case of course (The Sign of Three) was not written by John at all... I'll let you read it by yourself.
