State Of Play, Hollywoodland, The Company Men: three recent movies (when he started making better choices and turning his career around, basically around the time he made Gone Baby Gone, The Town, etc) where he's not behind the camera, and he is excellent in those.

Don't forget Chasing Amy.

Its interesting to see the waves in pop culture that this announcement has made. He does bring a lot of baggage which is why he's the butt of jokes on Twitter and in newsrooms over this announcement. The problem is that we have 2 Ben Afflecks . One Affleck made horrid films like Pearl Harbor, Gigli, Daredevil, Dogma, and was lampooned for his tabloid and film life. The other Affleck is the indie writer,, filmmaker, activist, and acclaimed Oscar winner and Hollywood power player. The question is, which Affleck will show up in July 2015?
Considering that the difference between those two afflecks is that one of them is the one in front of the camera and the other is the one behind it....it seems rather clear to me.
Yeah, directing good films and writing interesting stories for films.... doesn't make the guy a better actor.

Affleck gets to be a tentpole actor again without the tentpole actor risk. After a run of big movies that cast his tentpole future in doubt (Paycheck, Surviving Christmas, Daredevil -- no offense, sir). Affleck reinvented himself as a smaller-scale filmmaker, and proved his ability to direct himself along the way. And while he's recently nabbed the prestigious role of starring in Gone Girl, which paired him with the well-regarded David Fincher, the Batman role allows him free rein over one of the no-brainer success stories of July 2015.Because since it’s considered a sequel to Man of Steel and not a Batman movie, any potential underperformance issues won't ultimately land on his shoulders.

I get the feeling that this is like a "suits" casting. People aren't really seeing what this is. This is WB trying to set itself up, trying to retain its stars, trying to prop its name. I end up with the feeling that this casting had nothing to do with the movie itself, just business deals.

And that is why I find it perplexing. I mean he's cast now. So we'll see how he does. But WB seems to have went about in a very weird way. I still think they did not give a rat's ass about the script/character and just happily signed him as soon as Affleck showed interest.

What I find hilarious is that for the better part of the last year, anybody and everybody has been *********ing over Affleck's work in Argo, "Oh yes, he's at the top of his game, he's the greatest, he's our anything and everything" but THE SECOND news about him being cast as Batman came out, Argo ceased to exist in the minds of the internet community and all that was left is, apparently, Gigli and Daredevil. :o

save for maybe gosling or fass, whoever got cast was going to get **** thus is the will of the internet.

If you see the above, I am criticizing WB, not Affleck. WB seems to have went about this entire thing in a strange way.

Marvel has almost never cast stars, they trust the material. WB is like we got a star now **** the material, whatever it is the movie will be a hit.

Had a genetically engineered clone of Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender, Jon Hamm, Matt Bomer, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Josh Brolin been given the role, there would still be arguing and grief over this.

I just don't see how you can say this is terrible OR perfect. I like the casting, but other than saying, "Let's see how it plays out," there's nothing else one can do or think at the moment. Expecting the worst seems excessive. Give the guy some credit and some benefit of the doubt.

Seems to me that they're trying to hit two birds with one stone. Get a big name for Batman AND keep Affleck in the WB family.

they wanted and needed a feige/whedon. they have one who can act now. i do feel bad for zach if this was done behind his back.

That might explain why WB does it, But I don't think Affleck does this unless he thinks he can really bring his A game on this. I don't see Affleck going for Cash grabs like this.

Did you even read the link?

Snyder and the studio already had ideas for a follow-up, and Snyder reached out to Affleck to check the star's interest.

Yes and nothing about this seems to me like they thought about the script requirement or any of that stuff. They will NOW write and structure the movies with Affleck in mind because he's the big star.

The character would be WRITTEN to suit Affleck to hide his flaws and highlight his strengths rather than casting the character right.

Affleck is a very big deal right now. And none of what I am saying is Affleck's fault, it's just the way things are.

Even though I'm not a fan of the casting, I actually do hope that they prove me wrong and come out with an amazing performance. I just personally can't see it happening, especially with the caliber of Bale/Nolan still fresh in people's minds.

But, like I said, I hope they make it awesome. It's not like I want to see it crash and burn just because I think Affleck is a bad choice lol.

With all due respect I think Affleck is not that. But god knows, let's see. We don't even know yet if directing is officially part of his deal.

But Batman has a tradition of being played by recognized actors. It's a different situation to Hawkeye or whatever.

what's there to complain about if they haven't written it? shouldn't we be screaming hallelujah at this point? that means affleck will have a say in it.

Come on dude. Affleck is not a saint. People get so romantic about a business like Hollywood. This will EASILY be the biggest pay day of Affleck's career. He'll be rolling in money.

I'd bet my house WB offered him a **** ton to say yes and Affleck must have used all his power to land the most lucrative deal he could.

I just hope he's grown a bit since the Daredevil days. God, that movie was horrendous and I wish I could erase it out of my memory. Maybe this will help redeem him, but to be honest I don't like the concept for the film in the first place.
