I was in Edinburgh for the Book Festival over the past couple of days, and after staying at a friend's house last night, I got up about 9am and went in for a shower. I'm just out of the shower, getting ready, when my friend bashes the door and shouts "AFFLECK IS BATMAN!" Certainly a memorable start to the day!
To say the response has been vitriolic from the fanbase is an understatement. There is already a petition with over 50,000 signatures demanding he be removed from the role. At first I was too scared to go on SuperHero Hype for fear of the hate-wave. Me? I think the hate is absolutely predictable, but overblown and unfair.
Honestly, I'd have had a much bigger thrill of excitement to news he was replacing Zack Snyder as director of the film than to news he's starring in it as Batman. As a director, he's never made a bad film, and is on a whole class above Snyder.
But though I wouldn't have leapt to cast him as Batman, I do think he's underrated as an actor. Yes, he had a famed bad period with some of the highest profile turkeys ever back in the late 90s/ early 00s. But over the past decade he's had much more good acting roles than bad. I'm not just saying this to be an apologist, it's stuff I've been saying for a while now, like back during ARGO's release when I asked when people would finally forgive Affleck when he's already more than redeemed himself.
And actually, though I never considered him, he does tick a lot of boxes as Batman. He has the black hair, the square chin. He's old enough to fit the "older Batman" type the producers wanted, but he has one of those youthful faces that makes him look about 10 years younger than he actually is. If he can get in good enough shape to be convincing in fight scenes, I think he's a good enough physical match. And, though many disagree, I think he has the talent to pull it off. He's not Christian Bale - as an actor, he's more solid than spectacular - but the choice is far from disastrous.
I'm keeping an open mind. For me, the worst thing about Affleck's casting is the hard time the guy is going to go through from fanboys over the next couple of years, but I hope come 2015 he proves them wrong. The big thing to take from all this is... WE HAVE A NEW BATMAN!
