Justice League Ben Affleck IS Bruce Wayne/Batman - Part 6

I think we’re all on the same page that we’re ready for a detective Batman. A Batman thats not so much a superhero but a nocturnal vigilante thats solving crimes the police cant or wont handle handle.

Agreed. Even when he was talking about not cracking it you can tell he's like "****, this again..". Talking fast, hiding annoyance, etc. "They paid 80 million to have that digitally removed.." hah!

Burn.

So long, Batfleck. He was a straight up GANSTA in BvS and NAILED IT imo. Truly a brooding comic book brawler and he looked unbelievable in the cowl. Justice League was ass.

affleck did really well as bruce wayne.

my best to worse bruce waynes are probably:

1. bale
2. affleck
3. kilmer
4. keaton
5. clooney

and for batman rankings, it's probably:

1. bale
2. keaton
3. affleck
4. kilmer
5. clooney

In terms of power level and things like that, Begins really felt like the start of us getting a badass Batman who would only get better as the years go by.

Now clearly that wasn’t the way they went creatively, opting for a more grounded approach... but the pieces were there in Begins. I definitely think Begins is the blueprint for a great Batman movie and not just a great movie that just so happens to have Batman in it.

Affleck did in one scene for me what no other live action Bats could accomplish across multiple pictures. That 1% scene is muh Batman. His body language, his intensity, the way he subtilely slips into the Batvoice. And how it's all wrapped up in this real-world, Cheneyesqe paranoia. It made the costume and the set pieces just icing on the cake.

Yes, JL was disappointing. But for me, so was TDKR and Bale's performance as Batman in it as well as TDK. But that doesn't detract at all from what he did in Begins. So Affleck's performance in one film is enough to solidify him as my definitive Batman in the same way Bale's single performance plants him comfortably at #2 haha.

I just felt disappointed with Bale's Batman as more movies came. He seemed to be physically smaller after BB. His suit got worse, his voice worsen, the fight scenes didn't help him, his Batman was too stuck in Nolan's realism imo. I felt he got outshined by both Hardy and Hathaway in Rises, and both Two Face and Joker were mvps for me in TDK. If I want to watch a great movie then that is Dark Knight, but a better Batman flick is BBegins for me.

yea, that one scene where affleck's bruce tells alfred the 1% speech is very good.
that was some good acting there - and that is bruce wayne at his lowest point.
and now that u mention it, i notice he does slip a bit into his batman voice there.
it's a subtle way to show the monster that is batman is starting to consume him.

yea, bale is still best batman for me...but i do wish he toned down the batvoice in the sequels.

it was mostly perfect in begins.

somehow he got carried away it and it got ridiculous in the sequels - esp in rises, it almost sounded like a parody at times. lol

Don't get me wrong, I liked Affleck's Batman and I actually dug BvS. But anybody else could have played the role and the result of what we got would have been, essentially the same.

You can say that about almost any iconic role and performance. There's no role that there aren't dozens or hundreds of actors who could do justice to it.

Doesn't mean he didn't nail it.

For Wayne I'd say;

1. Keaton
2. Affleck
3. Kilmer
4. Clooney
5. Bale

For Batman;

1. Bale
2. Keaton/Affleck
3. Kilmer
4. Clooney

Overall I prefer TDK, but yes I agree with this.

It’s bizarre how much he lost his way with the role. Have you seen him in the Batman Begins video game? That’s another one-off voice performance that doesn’t match any of the live-action films. And that was done a year after he filmed BB.

I remember reading Keaton also had trouble getting back into the groove for Batman Returns. He had to train himself to approach the role from scratch all over again because he felt like he was going through the motions of copying his performance in B89.

It shows with Bale. His performances in the sequels feels like amateur impressions of himself.

yea, the begins suit actually looked scary and intimidating.
and also looked good in silhouette.

it's probably the best movie batsuit, after the bvs suit, for me.
Batman Returns suit is my fave, very closely followed by BB for the exact same reasons as you

yea, i felt like bale's bruce wayne was consistently good for all the movies.

but his batman was never as good as it was in batman begins.
i guess batman's not as easy to act as people think it is.

the one thing that's really good about the burton suits, especially the returns one, is how good they look under burton's lighting.
there's a very cinematic quality to them.
it's that german expressionism quality that he tried to infuse in his batman movies.

There were little facial ticks and looks too that Ben gave where you could tell he really mentally invested into playing Bruce Wayne. Theres one scene in the beginning of BvS where Alfred chides him playfully about something (i cant remember) and Ben gives Alfred this side glance, this “seriously?” look, but its so subtle and played in such a grumpy, brooding way that I felt captured Bruce’s character. In fact, I felt Ben and Iron’s repartee in BvS was some of the best Alfred/ Bruce stuff we’ve gotten onscreen.

Christopher Nolan wearing a black turtleneck and eating cold bowl of vichyssoise.

Bale walks in and sits by the long staircase/

Bale: May I have a word?
Nolan: Talk.
Bale: Does me voice hav to bee so bloody awful?
Nolan: The criminals wunt recognize you, mate.
Bale: Sure, but must it bee so cartoonish? nigh-thu Keaton nor Clooney did it.
Nolan combs Bale hair behind his ears ever so slightly and gives him a fatherly look.
Nolan: Trust me. You will be the best Batman. And no background extra will evah walk in your way in the middle of a scene.

Emma walks in/

Emma: Oh, darling! The part where John Blake gives the audience his full name is...
Nolan: Brilliant.
Emma: Yea. about that.
Nolan: Not bloody now! Not in front of guests.

MyCocaine walks in/

MyCocaine: Just go back from the doctors.
Nolan: Everything ok?
Mycocaine: Rubbish. Pure rubbish.
Nolan: Aye, how so?
Mycocaine: They said I have me a lump in my testies...the size of a tangerine.
Nolan: Oh.

affleck and jeremy irons chemistry in bvs was very good.
it was different enough from previous live incarnations but still felt very much like that batman and alfred relationship.
and it felt believable where they've been operating as a team for a very long time.

lol terminator salvation don't trash my lights rant will always be an important part of bale's hollywood legacy.

Eh, the old butler thing never sat cool with me, which is why I have always preferred a version of Alfred that had militray background and works on the gadgets alongside Bruce.

Not to make a ROMA reference to the ''help'', but the classic version of just the butler thing is meh to me. You my family, but still clean my clothes and serve me dinner , which is why I preferred the version of Irons Alfred.

Right, people have to remember that when you nail Bruce Wayne, as well as the close up scenes of Batman that aren't a stunt double, then the rest you buy into. That takes Affleck's performance to work. It's like mixing set pieces with CGI: the more realistic or well-set up the set pieces are, the more naturally we can buy into the CGI.
