Since the announcement of who is playing Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight is "imminent", I guess I'll put out one last listing of my favorites for the role. Odds are none of them will be cast, but it'll be fun.
So, without further ado...
MY FAVORITES 4 HARVEY DENT
4. Eion Bailey
Allegedly one of Nolan's frontrunner's for the cape & cowl had Christian Bale passed on the film, Bailey is my fourth choice to play the dual-faced district attorney in The Dark Knight. He's got a terrific look for the part and has this uncanny ability to make his face just look like the coldest and desolate place on Earth. He's not half bad of an actor, either. The first time I saw him appear on ER, my position against him playing Superman at the time completely changed. However, Routh got that part. But Dent would probably pose more of a challenge for the young (but older looking) actor.
3. Leonardo DiCaprio
The biggest 'name' on this list. I probably don't need to say too too much about the actor since most people have known of him (and were probably sick of him) since they saw him freeze in Titanic.
The guy is talented, smart, and handsome. He'd be a terrific choice for Dent and would fit in with the cast already established quite well. He was a wonderful child actor in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, a terrific anti-hero in Catch Me If You Can, but finally made his first tremendous impression on me with his incredible turn in The Departed. If you haven't seen it yet, go out and see it as soon as possible. It's amazing. While DiCaprio may not be the most original or inspired choice for the role, he is certainly capable and would fans of Dent & Two-Face mighty proud in the end.
2. Jeffrey Donovan
Best known for his gripping performance as Detective Creegan on 'Touching Evil', which had the actor portraying a police officer slipping into madness. Widely seen in the recent Will Smith romcom 'Hitch' and is getting praised for his role in the sundance darling 'Come Early Morning'. Had memorable guest stints on 'Monk', 'Threshold', 'Yes, Dear', 'Crossing Jordan', and 'CSI'. He's been a favorite of mine for quite a long time and I still am of the opinion that he'd kill in the Dent role. He was originally my #1 for the role, but those things can change...
1. BRADLEY COOPER
He's got the 'prestige':
He's got the look:
He's got the range:
Jeffrey Donovan has been, at least for the last year or so, my #1 pick for the role of Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT. He has everything I (and hopefully Nolan too) look for in an actor and would be a great Dent. But he has played the whole bright & shiny - to - destructive and demented before in 'Touching Evil'. He's also out of the primary age range that seems to have been chosen as the ideal age for the character.
That brings me to Bradley Cooper, who will never in a thousand years get this role because the universe is both cold and cruel.
The man is an outstanding actor, performer, and personality. He has the charm, intelligence, passion, and aggression for the role of Harvey Dent, a role that one would presume to lead into the big 'Two-Face' story-arch eventually. Cooper really hasn't had a prime opportunity to show his dark side besides a few excellent episodes of Alias and a villainous turn in the comedy 'Wedding Crashers'. With the talent he possess, he should get a chance to stretch his legs a little.
He recieved rave reviews whilst starring opposite Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd in the recent Broadway production of 'Three Days of Rain'. He actually recieved better reviews than both of the other actors combined and I believe was nominated for (not entirely certain if he won) a tony award for his role. Many consider that Alias 'died' when the creators dropped his character from the position of 'series regular'. The show hit high points in seasons 3 & 5 when he made single episode guest appearances. The man deserves to be a household name. He's got that potential.
All he'd need is a role like Harvey Dent in Nolan's new Batman franchise to kick him up into the uber-mainstream range. I'm fairly certain he will get there eventually, but getting Dent would certainly help move things along.
Of course it's too late. Nolan has his Dent and is most likely thrilled with him as he is Ledger as Joker. I'm certain whomever Nolan does cast as Harvey will be a terrific actor and will do great things with the role. That said, I think that Cooper would be an ideal choice and his inclusion would be pretty much the only thing that could get me more excited (during the pre-production/casting stage) for THE DARK KNIGHT than I already am.
Thank you for reading.
Good night, and good luck.
