Bought Thought 10.15.08

Naw, that last season was great. That fight between Skeletor and Man at arms? That episode when they showed the first He-Man riding that big ass battle cat? Hell, they were about to bring in Hordac then the f**kers canceled it. First that then Samurai Jack then JLU. I am through with CN. :(

So is Marvel and likely superhero cartoons in general. CN's floundering. Network suits ruin everything in time. :p

I may give the new HE-MAN a try when it's all on DVD. I like buying entire series in one purchase and then watching them for a few weeks.

I don't count Adult Swim. It's still so awesome it transcends the channel. That's not Cartoon network to me, it's Adult Swim, and it doesn't come on until 10:00.

The last Cartoon Network non-Adult Swim show I liked was Foster's Home.

I thought it was funny that a show was built around an imaginary friend who's an unrepentant dick.

I hated Blue, yet I felt compelled to watch him.....

Question...If Maddie Pryor is the Red Queen then who is Mutant Zero?

Mac's big brother was a stark raving mad bully. I think Bloo being a dick was part of Mac's desire to get back at his brother. An imaginary tool of revenge, if you will.

I'm not sure, but I see everywhere that people think it'll be Jean, which I find unlikely, considering that seems to be where Cable is headed.

You want a show that grabs nostalgia by the horns and kicks its ass while still being an awesome show unto itself, watch Beast Wars. I still don't understand how G1 fans can hate it when it ties G1's story into its own and both come out richer for it. I mean, yeah, Beast Machines sucked giant donkey ass, but you can just ignore that part.

She still kicked some of the other robots' asses, though. With a vacuum! :D

I'm starting to suspect that may be true... :(

When Dinobot died in "Code of a hero" I almost cried. Thats How I always imagined someone like wolverine would die to. Beast wars easily pawns any other transformers show period.

Ok, you lost credibility there.

The only episode of Beast Wars worth anything was the return of Starscream's spark when it inhabited the stupid wasp.

That was only because it tied directly into the classic movie.

Ae you on drugs Boy? Beast wars had superior writing, superior storylines, and vastly more mature themes then any other transformers show ....ever. Go watch the best episode of the original GI series, and then watch the best episode of Beast wars, I garantee you Wars comes off as if were written buy educated adults.

I really enjoyed Kids Next Door. Every episode was like, ****, why wasn't childhood actually like this?

My problem with Fosters was it became increasingly hard to figure out why Mac wouldn't just abandon the obnoxious blue ****bag.

Because Bloo was his friend. :whatever:

But yeah, I would've totally ditched Bloo and adopted Ed or Wilt.

I would've taken Coco over Bloo, and Coco couldn't even talk. Didn't seem to stop Mac from understanding her, though.

Dread, where are the rest of your reviews?

Right here.

Dread's Bought/Thought for 10/15/08:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #6:
Reading this right after CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI-13 has a nice feel to it; two great team books with solid writing, art, inks and colors back to back. Goes together like laser blasters and talking raccoons. This wraps up the SI crossover, but the interesting thing is that 6 issues have passed, and it feels like we have gotten more than one story out of this. Abnett & Lanning manage to keep the story flowing as a narrative, while having enough "episodes" happen that things are hardly decompressed. Good show.

I did a lot of *****ing and moaning about the "obligatory" SECRET INVASION crossover, mostly because I was not in the mood for another "team infights" storyline. While it ends as you would expect (the team appears to break up because their trust is shattered), thankfully no character is "sacrificed" to the Skrull saga. None of them were Skrulls. Cosmo was just hiding Skrulls who wanted out of the new "jihad" movement and getting mind-wiped each time so he couldn't betray them, even by accident. The ones that blew up Knowhere were part of the Queen's crew, and they all died.

Highlights include Drax's method of finding the Skrulls (He only killed everyone for 90 seconds, honest!), Starlord's one-punch contribution to the Starhawk fight, and of course Cosmo beating everyone off panel.

Between this and NOVA, DnA have gotten some great mileage out of the SECRET INVASION storyline. So much so that it simply makes you think quite a lot of how much better that story would have been had it been written by anyone but Bendis. His ideas are rarely the problem, it's always his execution. DnA, among others, know how to execute a story. The Luminals continue to try to top the Shi'ar in the A-Hole Alien race department.

The Guardians seemingly disband once learning that Peter used Mantis to "steer" them into becoming a team, which shatters their trust. Mantis hints that events are not happening as they should, as if something is effecting time. Of course, Major Victory and Starhawk pretty much feel through cracks in time & space and they are a part of that. I sort of doubt DnA would write out everyone on the team here, although I wouldn't mind Gamora hanging out with NOVA again. Frankly I never care for the whole, "mindwashing people to get them to join a team" plotline because it always ends the same way, basically this. But DnA managed to get a decent story out of all of it and I have faith that they will continue onward, mixing the new GOTG with the old.

As always, Pelletier is in his element on this series, getting to draw splendid background and a myriad of characters, from raccoons to superheroes to hulking aliens and canines and it all looks great. I will hate it when and if he has to leave the book. When it comes to space books, he could be a Ron Lim for the 21st century.

The story suffers from some expectations due to the plot, but the dialogue and action, as well as characters, are enough to make it more than readable. Execution is everything.

GHOST RIDER #28: I had to call ahead to reserve this book at my LCS, and I am glad I did, because by the time I got to the shop, they were sold out. Guess Dan Ketch had more fans than I thought. This is the issue where the GR showdown begins. Contrary to cover, Ketch's GR doesn't have blue flame. At least not in this issue. Huat continues on art and, well, he's no Marc Silvestri (who did the covers). I am slooooowwly getting used to him. Aaron continues on his (so far) successful quest to make Way's retcons work and be enjoyable.

A Tibetan Ghost Rider is introduced shortly before Dan Ketch murders him in the name of his master, the fallen angel Zadkiel. Blaze and the new Caretaker, the nun Sara, show up to investigate. Naturally, it is frustrating to Blaze to once again be clueless about his own state to another generation of Caretaker, as well as being on the opposing side to his brother. Dan doesn't believe Blaze was ever around for him or his family, and doesn't respect the "gift" of the GR. The idea of having there being different GR's for every country is a good one, stretches the idea out a bit. Blaze and Ketch get into a fight-fight, and naturally things are about to get uglier.

Because there is a several page back up summarizing the history of the Ghost Riders to make sense of all the wacky retcons and stories, the issue $3.99. I still wonder why Marvel has no price between $2.99 and $3.99. Again, would $3.75 bankrupt them? I like the title but this issue didn't have to be four bucks.

The idea of the GR being a power from Heaven rather than Hell still doesn't sit entirely right, but that retcon's long been accepted and Aaron is managing to make it work fairly well, embracing it and elaborating on it. If anyone is going to make this work, it is him. And bringing Ketch back is a good way to renew interest in a series that had been lagging towards the bottom of the Top 95-100 without relying on another shameless crossover (like GR had with WWH). I am genuinely curious whether Ketch will be killed at the end? Freed from Zadkiel's control? Continue onward as an enemy of Blaze? Or what? I suppose to some, making Ketch the bad guy can be akin to DC sinking Kyle for Hal (to a much, much lessor degree), but I don't mind it, if only because Ketch's legacy is tainted by the mangled mess it ended on during the 90's.

The blue Ghost Rider on the cover reminds me of Bonechill from DYNAMO 5.

Huat's artwork is still dependent on taste. I would prefer a better artist, but I am beginning to get used to him. He still has some odd panel angles.

Still, I can't see Zadkiel getting drug out more than another arc, tops. Hopefully Aaron will know to wrap things up when he is ahead.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #19: Remember that thing I said about execution? Bendis doesn't have it. Least not often, and not here. The issue, as the cover suggests, focuses on Capt. Marvel. Both him and the alternate reality version introduced by Grant Morrison 8 years ago, which has bumped around the MU for a few years now, since CW. Bendis has some interest in making him the new Captain Marvel, which seems a bit off since he basically wants to take over the world, not defend it.

In execution, this amounts to a lot of stuff we have seen in other comics, only shown with a lot of panel banter. The narration of two characters having equal spaz-out moments literally conflicts with each other. Frank Miller buries readers in over-the-top sado-sexist jibberish, well, Bendis buries people in over-the-top freak-out, man-child emo jibberish. The only difference is that Miller's prime lasted a lot longer than Bendis'.

Summary: Noh-Var is in the Cube, which he has taken over. The Skrulls attack earth. He does a long winded version of "OMIGOD, WHAT DO I DO, SUPREME INTELLIGENCE, GIVE ME A SIGN, GIIIVVVEEE MMEEEEE AAAAA SSIIIIGGGNNNN!" The Skrull Capt. Marvel goes on his whole "I am Skrull! I am Kree! I am who I choose to be! Eee-eye-eee-eye-ooohh!" until he screams a lot, punches some spaceships, blows up and dies. Only he inspires Noh-Var. Maybe. The end.

Wasn't that worth $3? No. It's a mess, and it was boring.

Pham does the art, and he is due up to draw the upcoming Dan Slott run on MA, starting with issue #21, making this the penultimate issue for Bendis' run. The pencils seem a bit stiff from Pham, but I've seen some of his B & W pencil work and I conclude that the inker/colorist didn't make it look that vibrant. Hopefully Pham gets some better folks when the Slott run comes.

Bendis is phoning it in as he nears the finish line on this title, and on his SI tie in's in general. Can you tell?

THOUGHT:
AGE OF SENTRY #2 – Gotta love the 1960s feel of this book, along with the semi-introduction of Ms. Marvel. I’m enjoying this more than any other Sentry series that has come out. Parker and Tobin know how to do things old-school, and it shows. And as for the art, it almost look like Ditko, Kirby or Romita Sr. had a hand in it. I love it when period books get it right.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #27 – The story trudges along slowly. Ellis is managing to follow Whedon nicely, although some of the characterizations do feel a bit off. The artwork by Bianchi is also very good, but I’m not feeling some things like the tweaks to the costumes. Especially Wolverine’s gloves, what the hell is up with those?

BATGRIL #4 – I’m liking this series so far, it’s giving me an interest in Batgirl I didn’t have before. Beechen usually tells good stories, and with a powerhouse like Calafiore behind him it’s no wonder. The stuff that feels out of place, though, with the few incarnations of the character I’ve read in the last few months, is her acting like a normal girl and trying to land a guy. I think despite her attempts to be normal, she would be too “messed up” to aptly handle the social-life thing so quickly. I almost peg her as being like a colleague of mine, who would most likely castrate any man who’d make an advance for her affections. But, hey, that’s just me; as I’ve stated my experience with the character is nil…that’s just the impression I’ve gotten.

BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS #12 – Speaking of Batgirl, here she finds herself stepping up to save her new family from falling apart thanks to the events of RIP. This one is more mission-driven than emotional like the mini counterpart. However, again, I don’t really see her as being much of a team player or sociable. Maybe I’m reading the character wrong, but this is how it’s conveyed. So far, even without Dixon, the book is still pretty good. I was almost worried the book was cancelled with how this issue played out, seeing as they ended Infinity Inc. in almost the same way.

BOOSTER GOLD #13 – Starro returns! This little starfish dude certainly has gotten a lot of play this past year at DC. Also looks like another fine mess Booster has gotten himself into. It’s weird not seeing Jurgens’ art on the book, but Olliffe is a nice replacement for him. Different styles, but still great art. And so far, Remender is keeping the story going as it was set up, so we’ll see how his run compares to what’s come before.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #18 – Much like Batgirl, another character who’s getting the multiple personality treatment is Raven and Supergirl. This one is much different from the one currently appearing in Titans, but what can you do. This short tale finishes in this issue, and it was definitely a strange one. Not sure I completely got what was happening with the kid and I have absolutely no idea who his father was. The dangers of a Marvel guy working his way into DC, I suppose.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN #6 – Not much happens in this issue save for a confrontation of a new supernatural menace, and Blade trying to kill Spitfire because of her condition. Pretty much this story continues the weird tone of the series which harkens back to the days of early Excalibur; fitting considering it features a couple of members. And at least Blade is more like his old self than the crappy version from his last series. Also, is it me or did they totally rip off Ultimate Cap’s WWII look for Captain Midlands?

CASEY BLUE #6 – While I enjoyed the mini, I felt the ending fell a little flat. Basically, the entire mini played out as a big first act origin chapter. We’re left with more questions than answers and too much left unresolved. Hopefully, this really WAS just a first act and there’s another mini on the horizon because I think the character has potential, and this was a bad place for the story to just suddenly end.

DARKNESS #6 – First arc of Darkness is over, and I’m not sure it has the same appeal for me that drew me into the last volume. I’ll give it a few more issues to decide if I’m gonna stay on board or just dedicate what I’d spend on it towards filling in the backissues I’ve come to like.

DETECTIVE COMICS #849 – From the art to the story, I’m kinda digging this book. Bats has very few weaknesses that can be so aptly exploited, and Catwoman was the best one for this story. Sure, the heart removal thing may be a bit over the top, but when your villain is a first-class surgeon it makes sense. Another fine piece by Dini.

FINAL CRISIS ROGUES REVENGE #3 – The Rogues take down another speedster, and the rules have forever changed! This issue probably made more sense to long-time Flash fans, but it confused the hell out of me. And the other two went on so well. I guess basically the intent here was to set-up the future of the current Flash book with his villains to make them more badass. I only picked it up because I had read the book it spins off from. Overall, it just left me scratching my head.

FOOLKILLER WHITE ANGELS #4 – Nothing like two Punishers in one issue! I’m enjoying the new Foolkiller revamp (still need to read his original mini, which I just recently filled out in my collection, to see exactly how different he is). It’s got the Punisher MAX feel which is a sadistically guilty pleasure all around. Can’t wait to see where the character goes from here.

GHOSTBUSTERS GN – Ghostbusters in manga! Now, I’m not a fan of manga or anime at all, so I’m trying not to hold that against this book too much. Instead, I’ll focus entirely on the story. While it was an anthology of stories, there was an underlying subplot that carried through in some way in each but the first and last story. Now the first story, it just seemed to lose its point somewhere in the middle. The middle ones were good, very GB-ish, but the last one was something right out of the old UK comics with some more adult overtones. Now as for the subplot, that kind of fizzled out. They reintroduced Jack Hardemeyer from the second movie, only to have him replaced as the main villain by an obscure nobody ghost? Also, Winston drives around with semi-automatic weapons in his trunk? In New York City? And thinks they’ll do something against ghosts? I get that was an attempt to show his army background, but come on! Definitely not the best collaborative effort I’ve seen story-wise, but overall the book was very GB.

GHOSTBUSTERS: THE OTHER SIDE #1 – Despite all the bull 88MPH pulled, I’m afraid they’ve ruined me. Clavet assembled the dream team of Dabb, Kurth, Dery and Blond and produced some of THE best GB comics ever. So, it’s hard not to compare this to what has come before. On the art side, while good, there were a couple bad points to it. The backgrounds seemed very bland and the perspectives off in some places. Ecto-1 looked a little weird, particularly the roof rack, but that may have just been a distance issue. The colors are also very dark and don’t really jump off the page, unlike the front cover. As for the story, despite some inconsistencies with continuity (ironically MENTIONED within the context of the story) it was very well done. My only problem was the ending, as I felt that was just something that didn’t belong in the pages of a GB book; movie inspired or not. There were also so minor gripes with technical aspects of the art, but that’s more something between the hardcore GB fans as only they would notice.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #6 – The Guardians may be over before they start. Gotta say, I didn’t see the results of Drax’s plan coming, although I suspected either he was up to something or would be stopped since the book was announced as being cancelled. I think one thing this story did was a little subtle social commentary on modern perceptions. By having good Skrulls who just wanted to live in peace, it shows that not every member of a particular race shares the same beliefs. Very relevant in today’s terrorist-fearing world. And it looks like the meeting of the Guardians is gonna spell disaster for the present incarnation. Loving this book.

HULK MONSTER SIZE SPECIAL #1 – Hulk vs. Frankenstein, Werewolf by Night, Marvel Monsters and Dracula! This Hulk Halloween Special features a collection of stories with him dealing with some of Marvel’s own Universal Monsters. Overall, this was very well done. The stories were nicely crafted and had art that was fitting to their tones.

IRON MAN #34 – War Machine kicks ass. It’s nice to see the other Iron Man get some play after years on the sidelines, and a return to a closer version of his classic armor. Hopefully we’ll get an explanation to his current half-cyborg state.

JSA #19 – The JSA is torn down the middle over the fate of Gog and Magog and what they mean for the world. Is he here to save it, or is destroy everything? I’m actually missing the whole recruitment arc as I thought that was pretty fun and exciting compared to this. The story is really dragging as its far too complex to just be handled in 22 page increments; a sentiment shared by DC as they advertise 3 one-shots in relation to the story. Hopefully the payoff is worth it and this book can move on to more fun stories.

MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS #29 – The first time we see Spidey without his mask! This was a cute issue, a departure from the new two-in-one issues that’ve been running the last couple of months. Although, I miss the days when the book was a little bit closer in tone and characterization to one of the main books of yesteryear. It has been dumbed down some in the recent months, particularly since the MODOK story. While good, it was definitely not the same as Parker’s First Class.

MOON KNIGHT #23 – Not much happened in this issue except to set up for the next match between MK and the T-bolts. I just wish the story would pick up the pace some. Definitely a book written for the trades.

PUNISHER #63 – Doesn’t quite have the same zing post Ennis, but so far Punny is still kicking ass.

ROBIN #179 – Robin tries to instill the fear Batman did in order to save Gotham with everyone plotting against him at the same time. Leaves one to wonder why he doesn’t just grab himself one of the bat suits and play Bats in the meantime? So far the arc is taking some interesting turns, and it keeps that up I may just stay on Robin past RIP.

SECRET INVASION FRONTLINE #4 – I don’t know why I keep getting the Frontlines; they’re usually very dull. It could also be the very vibrant artwork that takes the severity out of situations.

SECRET INVASION INHUMANS #3 – Medusa is really becoming quite the hard ass. So far, this series has been pretty interesting. This and Thor have been the better of the tie-in minis (which, like most of Marvel’s events, are better than the main one). Gonna be interesting to see where this leaves the Inhumans when it’s all over.

SKRULLS VS POWER PACK #4 – And so ends another PP mini. The art was a better match to the established look than, say, the Hulk mini, but I still prefer the original, more frequent work. This issue was good, but the story as a whole just lacked a certain umph. The end felt kind of flat and anticlimactic, and I’m hoping there’s another mini on the horizon that’s gonna expand on this one to justify said flatness. But, I’m always happy to see the new Pack on the shelf!

SPIRIT #22 – Another fun done-in-one story. Although, I’ll admit since Sergio’s come on I’ve been confused. Ellen has gone from hanging out at home with the Spirit to simply lusting after him and trying to get his attention. Did I miss a story somewhere? Did they split up and she’s trying to get him back? Other than that, a series I enjoy.

X-MEN ORIGINAL SIN #1 – Great, another retcon looming. Did someone read their Ultimate X-Men when they wrote this? I haven’t been following Origins, so hopefully they plug up all the holes along the way. And it doesn’t suck.

YOUNG X-MEN #7 – So one of the Young X-Men is not a mutant. That was the big reveal this issue which, thanks to all the set-up, wasn’t much of a surprise. So far I’m still missing the New X-Men. This just really hasn’t captured the same magic.
