Bought/Thought 30/01/08

Ah ok. Bought AND Thought usually go in the same post but I can dig your thinking outside the box

I bought the #45 issue of Superman/Batman and man it was cool im loving how this book is going its actually coherent now and not a big huge mess like the last Arc I read which was that stupid arc with Van Sciver on art chores. I really like this arc it just shows you how these two characters are just the best especially when they are togethor. Liked this issue alot and on a side note Aquanewb is a tard.

I also bought What If? Spider-man VS Wolverine. Man this was so much better than i thought it would be, I mean they could base an entire series off of what was in this issue, it was just fun and interesting. It was basically Spider-man and Wolverine Black Ops team. Spidey kills! That was so damn cool I mean man this was just so damn cool I will read it over and over again.

well.... blackwidow did too...

but marvel has an interesting timeline... see i look at it as time moves faster/slower at the same time. see historical events, wars, technology move fast... but the amount of years is actually very long. I did the math once, and in marvel time peter should be about 29... according to the new logic Gwen died only about 4-5 years ago...

Marvel under Joey Q's rule tends to not understand how to "fix whats broken" instead they say... "lets just get a new one". Which i find sad, because good writing could have easily fixed 100 mistakes. Let your characters grow.. don't revert them back to the "good old days" those days are over, create new ones.. not a stale idea

He should be 28 now. The current age of superheroes began 13 years ago in Marvel time with the Fantastic Four. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and the X-Men popped up shortly afterwards.

In Civil War, Peter stated that he was 15 years old when he first became Spider-Man so just do the simple math of 15 + 13 = 28.

Simple to you but to us normal people we need to see the apples add up with other apples then putin a barrel. jeez you smart people.

Really small week for me. I had to scrounge for things to be able to buy.

Black Adam #6
The best miniseries I've read in this past year. Just...profoundly satisfying on every level. Action, humor, drama, character, artwork, everything. Even the ending, which throws you for a loop, which is saying a lot considering that the "ending" has been spoiled in the first weeks of Countdown. Hint: what you know is wrong. If you think you know what happens because you read Adam's appearance in Countdown, you are wrong like a mullet.

The acquisition of the magic word is just...it has to be seen to be believed. Hint: it's not "sorry." Thank the Buffy that it's not "sorry." And the scene in Fawcett City just made me miss old school Captain Marvel so much and lament what we've lost:(. So much harm has been done to the mythos through the thoroughly average Trials and the incompetent bullsht of Countdown.

Oh, and extra bonus for a "Ralph Dibny" appearance.

(10 out of 10 for the entire series)

Speaking of what we've lost...
The Trials of Shazam! #11
"It's the same one she used to steal Atlas's power"

...uh, am I missing something, Winick? Atlas' power wasn't stolen. He killed himself and Apollo took over and gave half of his power to Sabina willingly. Please don't tell me you just fcked up your own continuity in your own single miniseries, because that would be hilarious. In a horrible way.

What else to say? It's pretty much as average as prior issues in a miniseries that should have ended months ago. The plot is not horrible, but what's up with Mercury having the same exact shtick as Apollo? That's just not a good idea in a series whose entire storyline depended on coming up with original and interesting ideas for these new gods. Are you finally realizing that you ran out of room for actual story, Judd, by wasting everyone's time with your horrible stock antagonist? Meanwhile, Billy and Freddy's interaction is so unbearably...sterile. It's just there. There's not a single spark of the people they once were, of their past relationship. Shadowpact appears here, for no reason that I can discern other than to exposit some exposition that one would know if, y'know, one read the issue before this issue.

As far as I can tell, issue number twelve still hasn't been solicited. Thanks, guys. Thank you for making this last so long. Truly.

Captain America #34
I've started to buy this series, with this issue. Aren't I cool! It's just that I've realized that DC isn't the only company where you really have to search hard for quality material, and any source of gold must be fostered and cultivated like a gentle virgin flower. Plus, I only bought one other book, and that's kind of embarrassing.

I actually like the new suit. I also like manga and penis, so that explains my taste in style, but seriously, it's kind of a neat idea how he can just pull it on top of his black jumpsuit and take it off as easily. That's efficiency! And it's shiny.

Pretty good issue, standard introduction and asskicking to set up the hero. Bucky's text boxes bordered on the excessive side [I am following Steve's footsteps] [It is difficult for me] [Following in Steve's footsteps is hard and reminds me of war] [Look, a bullet] [It is difficult for me to dodge bullets] [Hungry now] but it's not like a persistent problem or anything for Bru and does have its place.

It looks like Tony is going to part of the ensemble of this book for the foreseeable future, which feels a bit odd, but Brubaker writes him pretty well -- one of the few writers who do -- so it's a good fit.

Wait whoa wait wait whoa wait, since when? lol

Penis-lover or not, he's totally right about Black Adam. That mini-series rocked ass.

Aquanewb was portrayed drastically different here than he has been in, oh, just about everything else he's ever been in.

I've yet to read the last issue of BA's mini. Been lovin it so far though

Superman/Batman has been vastly underrated for it's last 12 issues.

I read the first few issues of that Darkseid arc, which sucked enough that I dropped it. Then I flipped through the last issue because Aquanewb was on the cover and I'm in Aquaman-withdrawal. They completely mischaracterized Aquanewb and I was reminded that this arc is literally about Superman and Batman taking a road trip to destroy all the Kryptonite on Earth. Which is a stupid idea for a story.

It really isn't.

Uhm...nah. Sabina killed Atlas and stole his power. That's why Freddie and Zareb had to go recruit an unwilling Apollo...who gave Sabina half his power to #@% with Freddy.

I was all about this Trials of Shazam mini for about the first 7 issues. I can't stand to see this loser give up anymore powers to Sabina. No superhero is going to respect him if/when he becomes Captain Marvel :whatever:

I don't remember anything from the scene of Atlas' death indicating that Sabina killed him. More importantly, if Sabina already stole Atlas' power, then how does Apollo give half of it to her? The magic doesn't work that way.

Touching on some points:

- Apparently, Tony & the Mighty Avengers are less stringent with "unregistered heroes who were also our allies" now that the Civil War is over. After all, NEW WARRIORS has hinted that Stark is even secretly funding them, too. And there is also "New Cap" and all that. Basically, Stark gave "James" the clear to honor Steve's memory and the ideal of Capt. America. The rest...like I said, some of the "jackass" heroes of CW are trying to tuck back the jackassery afterwards. Besides, keeping SOME unregistered heroes around will keep the SHRA in the forefront and keep whatever amount of the populace that supports them happy. But, seriously, CW is SO 2006. :p

- Nice to see BrianWilly on CA. I will note he hopped on a while after I did. I suggest the Omnibus for CA #1-25 and two one-shot's, and then a trade for the stuff in-between (unless you like hunting back issues). It is good stuff, and I was hardly a Cap fan before.

- Marvel keeps the "timelines" vague, but THE THING's last issue from Dan Slott put Ben Grimm's transformation into the Thing at "13 years ago" so he could have another Bar Mitzvah, and that was in 2006. So, yeah, FF #1 circa 1961 to present is about 13 years, or should be. So, yes, Spider-Man SHOULD be 28 (or 27 going on 28). That should also mean that Spider-Man should have over a decade of experience as a superhero and REALLY shouldn't be jobbing so much in some books.

- Some bits in NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #2 that I missed commenting on. At one point, Piledriver (I believe) or one of the Wrecking Crew says, "I hate magic." This was during the Tigra-question scene. Now, this seems rather stupid considering they are all EMPOWERED by magic. Not only that, they just escaped from Canada where some newer demonic magic allowed them to jolly-stomp Sasquatch and nearly kill off Omega Flight. That's like She-Hulk saying, "I hate gamma radiation", or Superman saying, "I hate sunlight."

There is also a combat scene in the Sanctum where Wolverine, Iron Fist and someone else appear to be in two places at once within the same panel. It makes them look like they have Multiple Man's powers. I guess it was to show some time progression or something, but it looked awkward. I will add, though, that at least Bendis made sure that this Annual was hardly filler. It followed after issue #37 and it had Dr. Strange quit the team. Those are major developments. It also removes his favorite dues ex machina for plot-convenient stuff since the Sentry left. I wonder who is next. Wanda!?

Apollo gave her half of his power...not Atlas' power.

You don't even know wtf is going on Willy. You aren't allowed to review Trials anymore. You're love of what was before has blinded you to what's actually going on.

I really wish I'd started collecting Captain America back when it started with Brubaker. But, unfortunately, I was just starting my comic collection then, and I was never a big Cap reader when I was younger.

I'm looking forward to picking up the omnibus, though. I just had to get the money so that I could afford buying it. Now that I have, I definitely intend to. I just need to remember to look for it when I'm at my comic store, and hopefully it's not beat up. I need the Ultimates 2 hardcover, too, to match my Ultimates 1 hardcover.

I'm a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to my bookcase. Things have to match. Should I wait for another CA hardcover, or buy it in trades - so it'd go hardcover, then paperback trade, then another, etc. - or just get the omnibus hardcover and then start the serialized issue collection?

Oh, choices, choices.
