Bought/Thought 4/29/09 Spoilers

Heh, I got a kick out of Doom's love letter to himself in Cabal.

I hope he uses his Oldstrong power and not just his strength. We already have a big dumb Hulk.

So it would seem. That was pretty f***ed up that Caiera sacrificed the whole bloody planet because of Skaar's stubbornness.

But Skaar's different from his father because he actually has a personality that doesn't get wiped away every five minutes so he can go back to being the "classic" (read: stupid and boring) Hulk.

I like the book but I find it impossible to get behind Skaar.

That kernel of goodness in him makes him really compelling to me. If he hadn't been saving people at the same time that he was destroying half of everything he sees, I'd have been turned off because he'd just be another angry anti-'hero' who doesn't even live up to that qualified version of the title. But there's just enough good in Skaar for me to sympathize with and root for him. I keep hoping he'll realize his potential and become the hero Caiera wanted him to be.

I did love the tragedy of her last words to him, saying that she now understood why the Earth's heroes exiled the Hulk.

I'm hoping that Skaar's trip to Earth lives up to its potential.

Just read Sherlock Holmes #1, the new title from Dynamite Entertainment. Really good first issue, and for those who might be inclined, I don't want to give too much away. Basically, Sherlock Holmes and the Scotland Yard police have been notified that a man has been told he will die in his home at 7:00 PM, and if he tried to leave his home, various establishments would be bombed. The first issue covers the initial characters, all ending at the time the man is to die. (As to what happens, you'll have to read it.)

Dynamite keeps impressing me with their titles. Sure, a few are pretty bad, like Terminator; but, stuff like this and Zorro have been spot on.

It was one of those very obvious, expected things that are no less awesome for being expected. Like Bucky taking over as Cap. Now he just has to upgrade to a better costume and we're set. :)

Exactly. What a lot of writers miss out on is that they don't have to always deliver a "twist" so long as they execute something properly via build-up, pay-off, pacing, and skill. Some of the best stories are often the simplest. There's no need to over-think the audience when you're just producing good work.

To anyone that's read it: How was the loki story in the cabal thing?

I posted a long review of that issue on the first page and you missed it? I typed it at like 3 a.m., man. :o

I was thinking godhood, myself. The gods have elevated mortals to god status before.

Didn't they mention recently that Doom's been going through time, picking up magic tips from the great sorcerers? I thought that was how he started f***ing Morgan Le Fey.

Bendis always likes to show larger than life characters in pedestrian settings, which is why he made sure to show Dr. Strange sleeping with Night Nurse, virtually in mid-thrust with it having no more passion than a frat house romp. Same with Dr. Doom, only with time travel. Vaughan had Strange & Nurse have a sort of cat and mouse, Sherlock and Watson sort of relationship, one of mutual respect and a little tit for tat bubbling into more. But that's too complex for the guy who devoted an entire page in USM to having Reed make a urine joke. So instead we get Strange: The Porno. And, hey, the sex is apparently as dull as porking an algebra instructor in mid-lecture.

I was thinking something akin to godhood or power from Loki to Doom myself. Doom's tried to absorb the super-powers of other beings before, like Silver Surfer or Beyonder, so if Loki could help him attain a more "cosmic" status, that would be a worthy goal.

I loved how Herc and Athena used that against them in iHerc. Osborn was so annoyed that he actually had to rescue people from that ship Herc sank in order to keep up appearances.

Wasn't it Cho and Herc? I though Cho ordered Herc to trash the cruise ship. Anyway, it was hilarious.

I'd rather Loki and Doom take over already.

Me too. It is quite unrealistic that both really consider Osborn to be dangerous, when both have overcome far mightier obstacles with less subtle tactics. Doom more or less overcame the Beyonder with sheer willpower, while being dissected. Osborn should be a ****ing afternoon jog. Just shove a clone or illusion of Gwen Stacy and watch him pull his best Sentry routine of "flying off crying". :p

Even Loki, to give credit, has managed to completely outfox Thor, who is far more powerful than Osborn is.

I might go back and get this. I really liked the Lone Ranger series'.

Haven't picked up any comics in what feels like years... but now that HE's back... I might have to take a trip today.

How so? The extent of my knowledge of Welsh girls comes from Gavin and Stacey. :o
I'm not quite sure, but it's a feeling. There's just something in the way she acts that doesn't ring true to that.

Also, I thought she was something like 15. Not only does Land make her look way older, that still wouldn't be legal drinking age in Wales.

And another complaint: Northstar joined the X-Men before! He was a member for something like three/four years.

When Loki finds out that Dormammu is the power behind The Hood, you mean?

Yep, here are some interesting character connections (which will probably be disregarded) dealing with the cabal and Dormammu:

Loki/Dormammu: Dormammu made loki an underling to him and loki actually had to side with the avengers to stop him from taking over existence.

Doom/Dormammu: Doom has served under Dormammu fulfilling a mystical prophecy regarding a time when a great being and a man (doom) could take over the world. The other part of the prophecy? They could only be stopped by a sorcerer (Doctor Strange) and a spider (Spider-Man).

Now extrapolate that with Spider-Man's dealing with Strange and futher confrontations with Dormammu (ASM 500) and add in that the GG loves/hates pete and loki owes him a favor and you've got the potential of a major change up when Dormammu's presence becomes known.

Besides Land not being able to draw(trace) children, I think Pixie has been aged up.

The last thing I saw her in was X-Infernus, and she still seemed to be a teenager there. I guess maybe she could be 18, which I believe is the legal drinking age in Wales, but it'd be sort of odd that no one mentioned she's like 3 years older. Then again, maybe that particular pub in Wales was really slack about the drinking age. People don't seem to be as uptight about underage drinking there as they are here in America, which is probably why they don't have as many problems with it. Taboos are always more alluring.

I can tell you what Doom wants with one picture.

Finally got around to reading Madame Xanadu this month. I was just wondering (I'm probably showing my ignorance of the characters here), but Xanadu seems to be pretty broken up about The Spectre. I kind of understand in the context of the story why she is upset, but having The Spectre here isn't a bad thing, right?

At least Doom and Loki coming up with a plan based around magic and science would make alot more sense. :D

True. I could see Loki somehow finding a way around Mjolnir's enchantments.

Yeah, I felt the same way. I love this series; and, as I said before, am really, really going to miss the artist who's been on this title from issues 1-12; but, I'm not sure how I felt about the ending. Many times, I felt like I needed just a little bit of history about some of these things. Plus, there is the question is this really deserves to be a Vertigo title, as it seems relevant to the DCU. (I also felt for the past few issues, we were building up to the Holocaust, as there were many Jewish references; but, I guess not.)

It's a Vertigo title because it's rewriting familiar DC history, I guess. None of this is really valid for the DC universe as a whole; it's like an Elseworld. Plus, there were boobies in earlier issues.

I liked the ending. The Spectre only does good because it's bonded to a man like Corrigan or now Cris Allen. On its own, it's the embodiment of God's wrath. I think we gloss over that too easily sometimes. The embodiment of God's (big-G) wrath. That's f***ing terrifying on a cosmic level. That it's tempered by something as simple as a human soul is wonderful and reassuring, but at its core, the Spectre is a scary concept. I think Madame Xanadu appreciates that and, rather than focusing on how Corrigan may rein it in, she's focusing on all the horrors the Spectre will one day create. She can see the future, after all.

Someone quickly fill me in how Conner came back please.
