Bought/Thought May 7th, 2008

Secret Invasion- PICK OF THE WEEK. Awesome. Everyone else has covered it, I've got nothing.

Mighty Avengers- Great art, but just an alright issue, compared to last.

Iron Man- I'm in for issue 2. Blatant movie tie-in cover ftw!

Transformers Sequel- Mostly set-up. Hopefully we'll get to the cream of it next issue.

Amazing Spider-Man- Liked it better than Gale's previous issues. His Jonah moments were great.

X-Factor- What? Yeah... not so much, PAD. Love Quicksilver, but this was confusing and pretty lame.

Thunderbolts- If Gage becomes the regular writer, I think I'm sticking around. This was solid.

Avengers/Invaders- Not bad.

American Dream- Why aren't any of these artists on Spider-Girl?

Cable- Think I'm dropping this.

PWJ- Really enjoyed it. Even the art was working for me.

Hey, what a surprise, Renee died in Buffy #14. And here I totally expected her to survive after showing a modicum of attraction to Xander!

Seriously, this is such standard Whedonverse practice that Jeanty may as well have drawn Renee in a red shirt with the phrase "I'm going to die soon!" across her chest. And the really annoying part is, this was a genuinely fantastic issue outside of that. One of the best of the series so far, in fact. But, of course, they had to ruin it with the boring, same-old device of killing off an interesting new character simply because she's a love interest for one of the main protagonists, and oh noes, no one can ever be happy, ever in the Whedonverse. :o

What about Kitty...?

...oh. ****.

:cwink:

He's like a self-parody when it comes to killing off main characters' loved ones now. And yes, I know Goddard wrote the Buffy issue, but I'm sure Whedon had his input, even if it was just to cheer Goddard for deciding to kill Renee himself because it showed that he finally understood how they do things over there in the Whedonverse.

Totally agree about Nauck as a good pick for Spider-Girl, by the way. His art was crisp and clean and fresh in a way that Frenz's hasn't been in, oh, forever.

Outside of that and anything involving Buffy and Satsu, which is crap and turns more crap the more of it they do.

Yeah, I thought it was a one-off thing they could chalk up to experimentation, but they seem to be moving into full-on relationship mode.

Frenz's art KILLS ME. It's not awful, but God damn do I miss Oliffe. His art was beautiful. And all these MC2 minis end up with great artists that I'd love to see on Spider-Girl. I know Frenz and DeFalco go way back, but I think it's time to cut the cord.

I'm at a crossroads in my life. It's either that comics have been sucking more than usual lately, or I'm just losing interest.

It's not so much that I hate Frenz's art, I just don't think he's a good fit for Spider-Girl. He rocked on Thor back in the day.

I didn't like Olliffe when he started, either, but he grew on me to the point that I looked forward to his work even outside of Spider-Girl's comics.

Then take a break, I personally like to travel, when you come back you can cherry pick the issues that seem to interest you and go from there. I don't think anyone can consistantly buy and read comics every week, or anything for that matter, without coming down with burn out. I generally find it's better to just walk away for a while, you'll save money and the stories will still be here when you get back.

Yeah, I've had my periods where I've hated everything. Just branch out and try some new and different kinds of comics. That's how I wound up reading a lot of indie trades. Eventually you'll start missing the ol' superheroes and, when you come back to them, you'll be more forgiving of some of the nitpicky ******** that gets in the way of enjoying their comics sometimes.

Orginally posted by Doc Destruction

Oh, and is it me, or do we have FOUR Captain Americas running around now?

1) Bucky
2) Skrull Cap
3) Invaders Cap
4) Skrull Might-Be-Real-Cap

And yet none of those caps are the real Steve Rogers. I swear marvel is milking his death to the extreme man. They keep trying to tease us that he might be alive despite the fact that Joe Q himself stated that " Steve Rogers is 100% dead" and we actually saw his rotting dead body in the Confession.

It's just, I'm tired of getting invested into a comic and then having the creators leave, or a bold new direction, or some **** messing it up. Rucka and gang leaving Checkmate, Stroman and his horrible art coming on to X-Factor, books I love, books I read every month just losing me.

The Spanish issue of Blue Beetle was still fun, though. And David's still writing the hell out of X-Factor. Just, um... squint?

Eh, Thor is kicking ass, and the Superman titles are *****ing. Guess I just need to weed out my pull list again and widen my horizons.

Impose a per-week price limit on yourself. That did wonders for me. I cut a lot of crap I was reading just because, and now I enjoy pretty much everything I buy every week, unless it's something I'm trying out for the first time, which is naturally more hit-or-miss.

Yeah, but Olliffe improved with time. Frenz has been mediocre for a while now.

Darth, might I suggest Walking Dead or DMZ? I only read the trades of both, but I blow through them every time I read them. Fantastic reads.

I already read both in some form or another.

Check out The Damned.

Frenz, I think, has just been doing this for so long that he's become complacent with his style. He's past his experimenting phase.

Sounds like it might be time to trim the pull-list then. Happens to all of us.

Yeah, that could be it. It's just... boring, I suppose.

Holy ****, that's hilarious.

Is the real Cap hiding out in the Antarctic recuperating in a Captonian battlesuit? Will he emerge to lead the battle after Skrull-Cap destroys Los Angeles? Will he be wearing a mullet?!?!?!

I think a guppy just ate his left eyeball, and he has some sort of chum scrubber living in what used to be his lungs.

1st should I pick up Invaders and 2nd I bought Thor Vol 1 by JMS(corp should be proud) and i bought wizard 200 part deux and Dc universe #0, havent read or thought about any of them yet.

I am proud. If I had an e-cookie, I would give it to you. Virtually.

It would look delicious. :)
