Hordes Drive '300' to Record
by Brandon Gray
March 11, 2007

300 was anything but spartan, reaping an estimated $70 million on around 4,800 screens at 3,103 theaters in its opening weekend. That eclipses all previous ancient battle pictures by a wide margin, including Troy and Gladiator, and ranks fifth among comic book adaptations.
If the estimate stands, the $65 million computer-generated battle picture conquered the March opening record, previously held by Ice Age: The Meltdown s $68 million. It's also the third-highest grossing start for an R-rated movie, behind The Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ. 300's opening included an estimated $3.4 million from 62 IMAX venues, surpassing Superman Returns as the biggest IMAX debut ever.
"We felt we were going to be between $35 and 40 million," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' president of distribution. Fellman explained that 300 had 68 percent public awareness in tracking surveys going into the weekend and that only one movie in the past, The Fast and the Furious, had opened to $40 million or more with less than 70 percent awareness. Warner's exit polling indicated that 300's audience was 60 percent male and 52 percent under 25 years old, while the grade from moviegoer pollster CinemaScore was an "A-."

Among milestones, Ghost Rider became the first 2007 release to cross the $100 million mark and surpassed the final gross of Daredevil.

Note : At last the WB has hit a winner comic book movie besides Batman, and Superman.

^ You know what I mean and wasn't it a graphic novel.
Yes, 300 is a graphic novel, but it still belongs in the ranks of comic book adaptations, as do all films based on comic books, comic strips, graphic novels or any other form of sequential art.

As to what you meant, I can only presume you meant that it's not a superhero film, which of course it isn't, but I take exception to saying that it's somehow not really a comic book film because it doesn't deal in stereotypical comic book subject matter. I'm a big proponent of the comic book medium expanding its reach and being recognized as a medium that can tell any type of story. In that light, 300, Road to Perdition and Ghost World are all just as much comic book movies as Spider-Man and Batman. Unless you had some other meaning in mind. In which case, please explain.

Edit to add: I just looked it up and although 300 is most famous as a graphic novel, it was actually first published as a five-part comic book series.

Correction. GR had a budget of $110 million. So by after next weekend it will make back it's whole budget domestically. I find it impressive that it managed to be #4 this past weekend.

Yeah. Just like everyone was saying that Superman Returns budget was 260million when in reality boxofficemojo was forced to change this to 270million a couple of months after the film was released. GR budget of 110million was confirmed on multiple websites 8 months ago. Boxofficemojo will probably change it to 120million in a few months.

No it was originally released as a 5 issue comic book mini series. So yes it can be termed as such. Its rightfully earned its place as the 5th highest opening among comic book adaptations. The fact that its opening 3-day weekend outgrossed every iconic comic book superhero movie besides Spider-man and X-Men is amazing, and by no means should be downplayed.

Oh and any of the 300 Spartans would slaughter most so called "Superheros" LOL.

You don't really think of the characters from 300 as a typical superhero from the comic books. It's not the same. However I agree 300 belongs on the Hype more than James Bond. Bond should have his own forum over at Coming not here. IMO>

Mondays #'s are in, updates below. $ 533,512. Down 20.2 % from last Monday.

unfortunately GR hitting 100m has almost been pushed aside in the headlines by 300's amazing debut. First movie this year to hit that mark, it'll match its reported 110m budget, and it'll most likely hit 200m worldwide by the end of the month...maybe sooner. So...its not huge, the movie is alright...but atleast its not a bomb. Studios had to have been watching GR closely to see if it would fail...and if it had, a bunch of comic book movie options and adaptations might have been scrapped. So Marvel, MSJ, and Nick Cage have something to be happy about. Cage finally has a more than modest hit on his hands after 2 years, and Marvel gets to keep making movies.
This may sound cheezy...but, I had been waiting a long time for all these comics to finally be made into movies...and although not all of em turn out to be that great...if all it takes is atleast nailing the special effects on GR and watching him come to life...then I'm happy. And look at FF2...with its sequel it looks like it may redeem itself after the first one.

Agreed.

No question FF 2 is going to blow 1 out of the water. :woot:

In what way? In quality or in boxoffice gross. I agree that the trailer for FF2 suggests that the film could be epic and it will probably have a big openning. However, I thought GR was going to be good after seeing all the trailers and I still think its one of the worst comic book movies I've seen in recent years. The only comic book films I dislike more are Elektra and Catwoman. I actually like Daredevil's special edition a little bit more than GR.

I hope GR reaches $200 million world-wide, any less than that and i think we could be struggling for a sequel.

300 taught me one thing:

You can make a good R-rated comic book film, and it'll make over 70 Million in it's opening weekend and get a fresh rating from the critics.

You can make a medicore PG-13 comic book film and it'll make 40 Million in it's opening weekend, and get the most rottenest rating from critics.

If only MSJ wasn't so paranoid about the movie not making enough if it had an R-rating......*sigh* Daredevil suffered the same. But looks like the GR DC will be cool.

Sure hope we do get a Ghostie Director's Cut/Special Edition/Unrated, Extended Whatever.
