Breaking Bad - Part 14

I still think BrBa could probably have one more season (before the events of season 5) but I'm still pleased with their decision.

It took like almost 2 seasons for the really good stuff to appear on Br Ba. I'm glad the last couple of seasons are awesome.

I actually wish Todd and the Nazis were fleshed out 1 maybe 2 more seasons. But overall, I liked every season. Still my favorite show.

Ah. I knew that sentence was gonna be read the wrong way.

Guess I read that sentence the wrong way too.

Just to clarify. Breaking Bad is one of my all-time favorite fiction works I've seen. Is near perfect.
What I meant is, the first season -and perhaps the first half of the second one- are slow. Not slow in a bad way, but that is just prepares everything, it sets in motion what it would become. It's a necessary step. But when you see it for the second time (like I'm doing now) I want the show to get to the real juicy part. The evolution of Walter White isn't complete if you don't see how he began.

So we're all in agreement that DyeLorean hates BrBa, and he should be banished from this thread, right?

Agreed. It doesn't help starting the show at anywhere but the first episode. That was a problem I faced when I first started the show into the first episode of Season 2.

Here's an old example, but Dexter began when Dexter was... well, already a killer. We did get flashbacks and stuff, but the overall arc of the character through the series was messy, not clear, it didn't have an specific target.

But with Br Ba we really got an evolution, which is (one of) the most fascinating aspects of the show.

The first 31 episodes set up the series for an incredible final 31 episodes.

The 32nd episode (Half Measures) has Walt save Jesse's life by killing Gus' dealers and telling him to run. That set off a chain reaction that went from Full Measure to Face Off to Felina. However you need those 31 episodes and they become even better re-watching them knowing what comes.

Yeah, that's a good way to put it.

There are scenes that you don't really get the first time around, or you don't know why they are telling you that. But then, you get the pay off. Everything that was told or shown, was for a reason. And in retrospective, that's genius writing. You don't really know what they're trying to do, but everything clicks together at the end. That's one of the reasons why the show is so clever and so very well written. You don't really see the mechanics of it, but you know they're there when the emotions you get from a powerful scene you just... feel it.

The slow-burn was necessary for what they were doing. Had they pushed the gas early on it would have been overbearing and turn into a form of torture porn with the misery inflicted on the character. Read up on some of the rejected ideas that Gilligan had to see what I mean. For me the show was fascinating from the very start. The third episode is still one of my favorites of the series.

wish Dean Norris got nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He deserved it

I don't feel like you need to jump through hoops to justify your opinion, because I too think that the first season or two wasn't as good as the later ones. It improved as it went along, which is a good thing to say. Very few shows can have that said of them.

I need to go back and binge watch the whole series, I really miss this show. I wonder how different it will be to watch it in fast succession like that like a lot of people who didn't watch it from the start like I did originally

Personally I don't think the quality was that much improved in later seasons. People were just much more invested in the characters and events by then.

I felt it was a good show from the beginning, but I definitely feel like the quality improved from season to season.

The show was also a very different thing in the beginning. It started off as a black comedy, but shifted into more of a straight drama during season two.

Right. And then it went into thriller territory.

but even in it's darkest seasons, BB still had some humorous "black comedy" moments.
like for example ted slipping on his rug in season 4

Okay that is easily my favorite thing ever. :awesome:

TBH, I see Skinny Pete as Pinky. :o:p
