Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

Fighting the good fight somewhere is my canon too heh. I didn't read many of the comics, but I remember she made a brief re-appearance in Angel's sequel comic "After the Fall" and she was pretty much a rogue demon hunter there.

haha i hadn't read that yet but i did learn about the comics recently. trying to decide if i want to follow the story or not. we'll see how i feel after i finish season 5

i read in my wiki deep dive after finishing buffy that the character of justine was created on Angel only because Elizabeth Rohm (Kate) was not available. i'm glad she wasn't available. i would've hated if that's the path they took for Kate
Oh man, I had never heard that, and yeah, I would have hated that direction for her character. I thought the ending she got felt right, and left her in a place to do some good.

Amber Benson had to withdraw from her scheduled appearance at ‘90s Con next month, so the convention booked Julie Benz (Darla) to replace her.

Man… Buffy’s mom, Cordy, Spike, Darla, Soldier Boy and Glorificus at the same convention. It’s a shame SMG had a bad experience at a con years ago and won’t do any more.

Since The Last of Us is a huge hit, I wasn't surprised to see various/related videos pop up on my YouTube feed. But this one, in particular, caught my eye: a young Pedro Pascal :wow: as fellow freshman Eddie in "The Freshman." (S4; E01).

(Can't embed; so thou must clicketh to watch on YouTube.)

Yes I caught him in my Buffy rewatch last year. I had to do a double take because his face was so different, but the voice gave it away.

The Mandalorian jokes in "The Freshman" write themselves. And that final Buffy v. Sunday fight is one of my favorites in the series.

I can't help but think about story possibilities if they kept Charisma Carpenter on Buffy for one or two more seasons before moving her character to Angel. Because I think they could've made it work with Angel, Doyle, Kate and Wesley for a season or two.

You know Cordy would have some snappy remarks about Glory having a better wardrobe than her, her joining a sorority at UC Sunnydale with demonic ties or her disgusted reactions to Anya talking about her bedroom antics with Xander.

Giles kills Ben — “The Gift” S5 E22

I find this scene fascinating because it seems to encapsulate the equivocation (hypocrisy?) that genre fans have over the issue of a “No Kill Code” with respect to superheroes.

Ben: She could have killed me.

Giles: No, she couldn’t… [But] sooner or later Glory will re-emerge and make Buffy pay for that mercy. Buffy even knows that. Still, she couldn’t take a human life. She’s a hero, you see. She’s not like us.

Whereupon, Giles does the deed that was absolutely necessary according to the narrative — while still preserving (ostensibly) the hero’s purity. Now, one might take this at face value: a championing of heroic values. But I find it hard to interpret this scene (written by Whedon) as anything other than a meta/critical commentary. On the one hand, we insist that the hero remain unsullied, idealized. On the other, we understand and accept the justice of the villain being dispatched. Thus, as a narrative convenience, someone else (or Fate) must do what’s required.

Honestly, my main takeaway is "Rules of engagement probably shouldn't be based on species". You aren't going to make good ethical decisions on use of force if you are taught, and rely on, rules like "If Species = X, Fire Away, They Don't Count".

I actually rewatched S3's "Amends" recently and I think it's one of the most understated episodes in the series. SMG and David Boreanaz do Emmy-level acting work here (DB's lame Irish accent is still hilarious). And the final 3-4 minutes solidifies it as one of the best Christmas themed episodes in television history. Manages to give me warm, fuzzy feelings that Hallmark/Lifetime/GAC's endless glut of Christmas movies don't.

Not to mention, it gave us this gem:

Loved that exchange.

Shows like Buffy just remind me what a joke the Emmys are. People get them fo far worst performances on basic shows that just are on better networks and get higher ratings.

SMG should have several Emmys on her shelf for BtVS and not just the one for “All My Children.” That’s how good she is. And the Emmys are still gunshy about genre television getting accolades now.

I guarantee you if Wolf Pack runs for multiple seasons and is as critically well received, SMG won’t get any major Emmy nominations for her work. That’s how biased they are.

I just saw "The Body" in its entirety. I've seen bits and pieces -- never really had the nerve to see it until Fuse re-aired it this week.

One of the best and gut wrenching hours on television. It realistically portrays grief and how life doesn't stop when a loved one dies. SMG was robbed of an Emmy for this episode alone -- her performance is realistic and never over the top. The opening scene alone is devastating.

So I’m at ‘90s Con this weekend.

James Marsters is SO freaking nice. Ditto for Charisma and I have to give her props for doing all the selfies herself—she adjusted the selfie light for each person — and she looked AMAZING (like she just wrapped “Angel”). Had an interesting convo with Kristine Sutherland about the benefits of nonstop direct flights (she took Frontier because it was the only airline flying to BDL from her location).

Tomorrow is going to be a zoo with all the other guests coming in.

I went back on Saturday, didn’t go today because I had to fly back (and didn’t have a Sunday ticket). Surprisingly the Buffy cast wasn’t swamped like they were on Friday— the crowds were there mainly for the cast members from Clueless, Full House, 90120, Saved by the Bell, Charmed and Hocus Pocus.

I have another Charisma anecdote. I splashed out for a separate photo op with her on Sat and she had changed into the cat outfit from S2’s ‘Halloween’ as a surprise for the fans in line! When I took my print to her table later on to be signed, she got so tickled she took a pic of it. Had her add the “childhood trauma” quote to it as well.

Julie Benz is pretty cool as well. Due to the timing of the photo ops I took part on Saturday, I missed out on meeting Marc Blucas and Clare Kramer. Oh well, they’ll do other cons.

very cool that you had an awesome time. i'd heard Charisma is great and that she sometimes asks fans to take off their con badges so the photos look more "real"?

are you planning to share any pics you took?

she hasn't aged at all!

She looks like she finished "Buffy" and "Angel" a year or two ago, not 26 years ago.

Folks like Charisma and Ian Ziering really make the con experience one of a kind. Both of them do their selfies themselves, they don't have a volunteer doing it for them.

Most of the photo op customers took their con badges off right before the photos are taken. Here's my pics with Charisma and the full Buffy group op.

Very cool pics! You got to be around Glory AND Cordy at the same damn time.
