Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

Buffy was on Prime and now Disney for us internationally but never a hint of Angel until it suddenly popped up.
That sucks, especially how many crossovers happen between the shows.

What's the video and audio quality in these? I remember watching Buffy in Amazon a few years back and it was worse than DVD.

I expect Angel looks pretty good. The early seasons of Buffy have some quite shoddy work done to make them HD and widescreen. Sadly there's been nothing to report on for a Blu Ray release and/or proper remaster.

Best to avoid the shoddy remasters from a few years back. Amazon has those versions. I thought Hulu's weren't, as they preserved the original aspect ratio for the first 3 seasons, but they DO switch to widescreen once they get to S4, so idk what's going on there.

It's been a while since I popped them in to check, but if I remember right, for some reason Buffy season 4 and beyond have been widescreen here in the UK since the DVD release. The show was never framed for that, and the DVDs for the US were the same as broadcast. Not sure who would have made those decisions or why.

I know Whedon and others were very passionate about retaining the framing as it was, but honestly I think you could make the show widescreen without losing the compositions. It would need care and attention to do it well but plenty of other shows have done this. Can't help but wonder if Whedon's aversion kind of screwed us. Having no-one involved in the show interested in remastering and reframing didn't stop it happening, it just got done in a shoddy fashion by other people.

Whedons desire to keep it old school certainly didn't hurt us. Fox sucks at remastering and just wanted a quick buck to sell to everyone. CBS remastered Charmed in wide-screen and the original aspect ratio. They could do the same but that'll never happen.

True, there's no reason to assume Fox was ever going to spend money on it. Hoped one day for fancy blu rays but I think that time has passed. I'll hang on to the DVDs.

I think it's time for me to rewatch season 7 again on Hulu. We have a love/hate relationship, but I forgot how much I loved this scene from Lessons:

Blew my young mind when I first saw it. A great (re)introduction to the season villain.

... it really didn't pay off as much as I'd like. If I could change only one thing in s7, it'd be to make the First more active in visiting characters and messing with them. That is a really terrifying prospect when you consider all the ways it could haunt you. The really out of character argument the group has toward the end of the season would have been easier to digest if it was the crescendo of the First's manipulation. You could cut in a variety of dead characters that are talking in each persons' ears individually.

It was great to get a scene between the Mayor and Faith though. They were good enough to do that. Apparently a few scenarios were considered for 'Conversations with Dead People', including Anya being haunted by Halfrek, and Xander talking to either Principal Snyder or Jessie.

S7s greatest downfall for me is how much focus Spike has over Xander/Willlow, the Scoobies in general. Especially with the whole "back2basics" vibe they wanted to go with.

They also wanted Amber Benson back to play The First/Tara in that episode. That would've been devastating, but effective.

I still feel like for The First, they should've cast someone to be its main avatar instead of just using Sarah Michelle Gellar. Have a powerful guest star as The First, then you bring in the muscle with Caleb towards the end and I feel like it could've been better than what we got.

God yes.

The shoving of Spike and Andrew down our throats and not fully developing storylines like Dawn's potential, Willow and Kennedy's relationship or doing something with Xander always irked me.

As much as i love Spike in season 7, yep.
There was so much stuff that could have fit 2-3 seasons better.
A lot was so rushed and barely explored, which is such a shame.

You have so many plots and character arcs that left us hanging, leaving so much good stuff on the ground and rushing through it.

Not exactly related to Buffy. But close enough... :ebr:

25 year anniversary today!!!!!!!! Shame Disney isnt doing anything to really celebrate. Even the Buffy IG is putting out wrong information lol (stating Faith was called after Buffy died)
Do we really want to remember Kendra though? :o

This!!!

Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice that.

Do you guys think there will be a blu ray remaster complete set of Buffy and Angel eventually? I think it’s way long overdue.

Don’t think so after all I’ve heard over the years sadly, it’s like me still waiting for my DS9 Blu-Ray box set.

With Buffy being 25, I thought I’d don’t a ranking list each day (be it top 5 characters, villains, episodes, etc). Yesterday I ranked Buffy seasons:

7) Season 4
6) Season 7
5) Season 6
4) Season 1
3) Season 5
2) Season 2
1) Season 3

What’s your ranking?
