Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire

Anya breaking down in The Body was probably the most difficult part of the episode for me.

I think Emma Caulfield acted it perfectly, and I liked the way it turned the usual dynamic of Anya's fish-out-of-water nature as comedy relief on its head and made it sad instead. The whole opening sequence with Buffy discovering the body, calling the ambulance, and throwing up once the paramedics had gone was really sad too. The whole episode was tragic but kind of hollow at the same time. It's funny how an episode that ends with Buffy decapitating a vampire with an autopsy saw can still feel so realistic.

Damn, Season 5 has been almost perfect so far. Willow taking on Glory was awesome, it's about time we saw her cut loose with her powers. And Glory just realised that Dawn's the Key, which can only mean more good stuff is coming.

Season 2 of Angel has been fantastic too. I'm not happy that Kate and Lindsay are out of the picture, though...they were both great characters.

I just finished Season 5...wow, what an ending. I did not see Buffy's sacrifice coming and even though I know she has to come back somehow, I was still completely shocked. Fantastic finale, possibly the best so far. The entire season was awesome; I think it's tied with Season 3 for my favourite. I love it when the entire gang gets involved in these apocalyptic battles - especially when Willow gets to show off her magical abilities.

I did have two issues with "The Gift", though: firstly, while I loved the scene with Giles killing Ben, he makes a big deal out of Buffy not killing humans when she was knocking off the Knights of the Byzantium left, right, and centre only two episodes ago. Secondly, why didn't Willow just repeat the teleportation spell she used to get Glory away in "Blood Ties"? I suppose you could say that she wouldn't have enough strength left to do that after restoring Tara, but with Tara's help, she could at least have tried.

Giles killed Ben because Buffy is a hero. She shouldnt have to kill innocents.

And if you think back to Buffys dream with Faith where she says shes counting down from 730, that was the exact number of dies until the Season5 finale to which Buffy would die. And of course Little Miss Muffet was Dawn.

Oh yeah, I know why Giles did it rather than Buffy. It just seemed odd to me that Giles made such a big deal out of Buffy never killing humans when two episodes ago, she was killing the Knights of the Byzantium without a second thought.

And I forgot all about the Faith dream! Thanks for reminding me of that.

I'm interested to see how everyone copes without Buffy around. I'm hoping Angel finds out on his own show too.

I think Giles looks at it differently when it is self defense, but when it is a guy who never asked to be part of this, it is different. Ben was innocent in everything Glory did.

And dont worry, this will lead to the final cross over until Season7/4.

Yeah, I guess. Ben was basically the equivalent of Dawn.

And good, I'm looking forward to it. I love the crossovers, although I am glad that they kept them fairly few and far between.

I almost don't want to spoil it for myself but...does Faith ever return? Or is she just left in prison?

Don't worry she will return:cwink:

Glad to hear it, she's too good a character to not appear again :D

I just finished Season 2 of Angel. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the Pylea arc...I liked it a lot, but at the same time, it never really totally had me gripped. The finale was great though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Fred fits in with the group and develops now that she's back in reality.

Lets just say that Oz is the only major character who never appears again sadly.

It was so sad at the end of S2 angel with Willow just sitting there with that sad look on her face. I wish we couldve seen their reactions to it.

Oh and Angel and I think Cordelia were suppose to show in S6 premire Bargaining but due to the networks or well WB being little kids over UPN picking up the show they nipped it.

Which Bargaining is one of my favorite premires, hopefully you like it just as much as I do.

always wondered what would have happen if Spike was brought in as the big bad in season 2 of angel. It was planned until they liked him to much on buffy. or what would it have been lie if they went through with Doyle as a big bad before the actor died.

Or if they killed off Anya like they were originally going to do in The Gift.

Anya is one my favorites, thank God she survived The Gift to give us more awesome moments in the show. She also has one of my favorite speeches ever on the show, but that comes much later.

As for the Season 2 finale arc of Angel, I also like it a lot but it was not as engaging as everything else that followed. Afterward, I saw that arc as set up for a lot of what's coming in the show, at least as far as characters go, hell dimensions, etc. Season 3 I think was one of the best.

I think that Giles did not want Buffy to deal and live with the guilt of killing Ben as he was just an innocent. Gwendolyn Post, the Knights, were not innocent nor helpless when they were killed.

I never knew Doyle was going to be a Big Bad. I kinda like where the show went with him, with transforming Cordelia into a half demon. That did wonders for her character arc

Holy crap, Darla's pregnant?!
Yep and this will be her best story arc. Season 3 is VERY good. Definetly the best of Angel. You will be shocked, amazed and love with where they take this. It'll all around be good stuff for Darla, Angel and Wesley (wont tell you how he figures into this)

Aye, season 5 is my fav series, followed by season 3.

The most impressive thing about s5 to me is how they handled the plot with Dawn, having a kid find out they were not originally human. It was handled so well, teen alienation played to the hilt, lol, but the emotional reality of the situation was never less than completely convincing, esp for something so far fetched. :cwink:

Re: The Pylea arc in Angel, man, i was soooooo piiiiiiisssed off when they finished s2 with that arc, they were setting things up with the newly re-vamped Darla and Dru trying to make their mark on the LA demon/crime scene, and then wrapped that up in one episode, only to go on to some comedic other dimensional story, truly a massive wtf for me. It just did not feel in snych with the preceding season at all, and was the weakest part of it by far. It was a few years before I could even go back and watch those episodes again, they were alright taken out of the context of season finale expectation, but y'know, Angel is best in the real world setting.
s3 is all good though, no Pylea type flab. My fav season of Angel.

That is what I always loved about Buffy and Angel, that despite the sensational, otherworldly supernatural stories, it was grounded in the emotional reality of the characters, as the creators always without fail used it all with perfect accuracy as metaphors for all the different phobias, experiences, defeats and victories, and the elation of growing up and maturing. Extra special for me too as I would have been in Buffy and company's peer growing up. Many of their themes and "real life" difficulties they encountered as I did too.

Whedon was toying with the idea but then the actor died.

Aye, I know the show is ripe with metaphor for real life situations, but with this particular storyline there were aspects I felt could not be related directly to any kind of real life metaphor when it came to teen alienation, or indeed anything else in ordinary life. Yet, still, there was an emotional reality in presenting believable reactions.

It was those elements that I felt most impressed with in their presentation of emotional reality.

eg Everyone sneaking around behind Dawn's back, knowing she was some kind of alien energy given human form, knowing their memories had been tampered with, feeling very uncomfortable around her, not knowing quite how to deal with the situation. It could easily have come across very stupid in lesser hands, but it was played with the same emotional reality as any other metaphor type deal they used on the show.

edit: I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but in the way that situation was presented, I can't think of any real life type of situation that would play the way it did in those episodes.

Also, back in Restless, when they "repeat" that dream and she sees "730" on the alarm clock, Buffy worries that she's late, and Tara tells Buffy that clock's "completely wrong" (because obviously the countdown would be much lower now). And then of course, she says "be back before Dawn," referring to the character, not the time.

I've quite enjoyed the start of Season 6, although I've heard people say that the show takes a much darker turn here and I'm starting to feel that already. It's obvious that Buffy's pretty screwed up. I'm looking forward to seeing Willow and the others find out where they really brought her back from.

The beginning of Season 3 of Angel was been awesome. Much better than the Pylea arc and a great set-up for the rest of the season.

I think that sums up why I wasn't quite sure about the Pylea arc - it just didn't gel with the rest of the season. There was no Wolfram & Hart, no Darla, no Drusilla, and while it was enjoyable enough, it wasn't bringing the season's best (and main) storylines to the fore.

After watching the show are you going to read the comic book continuations too?
