I agree with El Payaso. That last scene in BB gave us the hook for the sequel that will pull us all in. I hope they just don't kill him off since he is Batman's greatest villain.

well after the movie came out and people asked if joker was next in line as the villain, either nolan or goyer said that it didnt necessarily mean he was locked for the sequels since they wanted to use lesser known villains.

Has anyone thought that:

A) Batman sequels are not quite independents....
B) The Joker movie might be called 'The Joker' and it might have nothing to do with Batman... maybe its a movie about a joker...not Batman and Joker.

I agree. Really read what he says in the article.

Now I will do something there are three pictures I want to do, small parts. One [Children of Men, released September 2006] is with Alfonso Cuaron who directed Y tu Mama Tambien, I wanted to work with him and then Christopher Nolan who directed Batman is doing a smaller film called The Prestige about magicians and it’s very interesting. And we’re going to make The Joker next year.

It seems to me that it is another completely separate movie that he is talking about, which coincidentally happens to be called "The Joker." If he was refering to the Joker being in Batman, I'd think he'd say something like "And we're going to be making the sequel to Batman Begins next year. The Joker is going to be in it" or something like that. I don't think he would call the movie "The Joker," especially since the casual movie goer might not even know who the Joker is, and I really doubt that they would call the movie that, obviously.

Also, I wouldn't consider his role in Batman to be a "small" part, unless they're going to make Alred's part smaller in the next film, but I really think "The Joker" he is refering to is a different movie.

He's got a few movies coming up, and nothing mentions any such thing about another movie titled "The Joker" . . . but I didn't read the interview
