The Dark Knight Caine: "Heath frightened the life out of me"

Think it started around Ledger/Depp/Oldman or was that another thread? I responded to Drexx who responded to one of my earlier posts that I don't quite remember- things often run on a tangent here and go off topic.

Lol, we're having a duel discussion, basically carrying the same discussion over two threads. We did the same thing earlier today in the Misc film section.

Batman Begins was nominated for Best Cinematography. Now I know that's not acting, but cinematography is pretty good for a comic book movie.

That's not exactly new, superhero films have been nominated in ALOT of the areas except 'best film' and the acting categories.

I just checked IMDB and the first Batman won an Oscar for: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration

So it's more the Oscars looking at the categories of film and acting than the other awards, since hero films have been nominated before.

On a side-not, just checked and it went astray around post #54.

For those that say the Accademy won't recognize Heath Ledger's performance because he's in a comic book movie... did you guys pay attention to 2005 Oscars?

Superman Returns was nominated for Best Special Effects

Batman '89 won Best Art Direction

As you connoted, there's a big difference between a technical Oscar and an Artistic talent Oscar with directing, writing, acting, etc.

Batman '89 won Best Art Direction

Wow, just checked- and I'm really surprised Batman Returns didn't win that as well. Because Returns was the more artistic of the two in my opinion. It took Batman '89 a LARGE step forward into the bizarre... which critics, at the time, surprisingly hated technically- "ink blot".

Well if Caine says Ledger is that good I guess will have to take his word for it.:whatever: :woot:

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, had a bit of a search and couldnt find anything so thought I'd post it here, if it's already been discussed the moderators can feel free to delete or merge.

Today's issue of the Melbourne Sunday Herald-Sun (Sept 23) carries a brief interview with Michael Caine talking about Heath Ledger's performance in THE DARK KNIGHT, suggesting he could be up for an Oscar nomination for his work.

Here's some of what Caine had to say:

"The worry going in was The Joker.

Jack Nicholson was the greatest Joker so, you know, how do you top that? Well, Heath Ledger's done it and he's extraordinary.

He's gone in a completely different direction to Jack. Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh.

Heath is like a really scary psychopath. I did one scene with him and he was ready to go and had to come up in a lift and raid our place.

I didn't see him for rehearsal and when he came out of the lift he was so incredible I forgot my lines. He frightened the life out of me.

I'd never met him before. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture."

The only photo accompanying the article is the pic of heath holding the knife up to Maggie G's face.

Thank you very much for sharing! It's been so boring the past few weeks...

Wow. This coming from Michael Caine has me VERY EXCITED!!! I can't wait to see Alfred in this scene now. At least we know Caine's reaction will be legitimate! :woot:

yeah. i mean, hearing that from michael caine is pretty big. going out of his way to praise heath. and the fact that he forgot his lines. that's pretty awesome.

Seriously.

And if by some f**king act of God that Heath was actually able to snag an Oscar nod, I would absolutely flip $hit. That would just be incredible. One thing is for sure: if it happens, Michael Caine called it.

i know. could you really imagine them showing a clip of the F-CKING JOKER at the oscars!? that would just be...man. i get goosebumps thinking about a joker that is that amazing. and i honestly think we might get something that will blow us all away.

You look like the biggest nerd i've ever seen! Sorry, but that picture just screams NERD!

You're posting on a Batman forum in a superhero message board.

Welcome to the club.

Does anyone else hate reading stuff like this? Just because it makes next July seem even further away!

Wait, what's the difference?

BTW- is there such a term as nerd or dork anymore, one of the top rated shows is 'Heroes'.... I mean, come on, we're all nerds/dorks now. Lol. Yesterday nerds, today- average.

Nerd usually implies intelligence and calling comic book fans nerds would mean you're assuming they're all smart. And if anyone here has ever been to Comic Con surrounded by thousands of our people you'll find Mensa members wouldn't get the place confused for one of their own gatherings.

Therefore, we are dorks. Geek can work to.

i know what you mean, but i love reading stuff like this. because i'm so amped for this movie. but then after a couple weeks of nothing new, it dies down a little bit, then something like this comes along and makes me even more pumped. i always think, july isn't so far away. like 10 months or whatever. the second i saw that joker card back in 04 i thought, "sh-t. that movie is too far away." i've been wanting to see joker ever since. so after 3 years, 10 months is nothin. plus, once we get that first trailer, we get to enjoy all the big hype. and that will be fun. =D it's gonna be great

Oh for sure! I really do love this bit news of because the board has been lagging, I haven't posted in any thread outside the Batusi Lounge for a while. This bit of info really did get me amped.

definitely. i think stuff like this is going to start leaking out now and then the proverbial flood gates will open once the trailer hits. it better be the greatest trailer of all time. but i do think it will be among the best.

Let's put it this way: "less than a year away!" makes the situation sound a lot better.

LESS THAN A YEAR AWAY!!!!!!

I hope Heath's Joker is at least a tad bit funny.

*cleans **** from batman undies*

i think he will be. there will be humorous moments. i think what it will be is, one moment he will be making you laugh but then he will abruptly change the tone and make it a lot more frightening and unsettling. that's how a clockwork orange was (ledger cited alex from that movie as a comparison for this joker). it's a disorienting experiene, but ultimately a satisfying one cinematically.

Exactly. This is how I've seen it playing out since day one.

yeah me too. that's the best way to make the joker. it's uncomfortable for the audience. but that's the way it should be.

The one film- IF MADE RIGHT- that will change Hollywood history, imo, in winning an award for best film is 'Captain America.' If they make that film right, that's a shoe-in for an award.

Epic and sweeping war movies typically win.

Captain America done in a respectable and other-world fact history would be astounding and could get that best film nod.

It's the ultimate story of a soldier from WWII returning to today's modern days, make a strong political statement with the film and have it be a sweeping war epic like it should be and that's an award winning story right there.

Not overly superhero, but just enough.

Before answering the quote here- I would want WB to feel like complete idiots for putting JLA into production should Heath snag a nom. :D

Captain America will rely on one thing and one only - a director. They need someone who will get the material aswell as comprehend the true'r meaning behind the Cap.

Think about it, Batman was created many years before Lord of the Rings, and I think Batman is much more fascinating, but you'll never hear the Academy say anything like this, nor will you hear the discussion of Batman comics on the same demeanor as JRR Tolkien's books.

The Academy Awards have been a joke for awhile now. I don't know anyone who takes them seriously anymore. They also don't have the power they used to, at least I don't see it.
