The Dark Knight Caine: "Heath frightened the life out of me"

I don't think it'll be anyone's fault (on the boards, that is) if TDK disappoints. I don't see what's wrong about getting excited. We're all eager to see Batman on the big screen again.

Not at all. I just don't want to get so excited expecting all of this stuff that I set myself up for disappointment. Heath getting an Oscar for example. I can go in expecting a cool Joker or I can expect the greatest movie of all time and Heath giving a performance that blows Anthony Hopkins out of the water.

I think Sir Michael Caine needs to check out some B:TAS Dvd's and mask of the phantasm, and return of the Joker, and some Justice League episodes with the Joker, then I'll gladly accept his opinion, but until that happens.....uh-uh

Just because he doesn't know of Mark Hammil's Joker doesn't mean his thoughts are useless. That in and of itself is absolutely ABSURD. The main point of the interview was:

- This is not Nicholson
- This Joker is PSYCHOTIC

Psychotic is the one and only word to describe Mark Hammil's Joker, meaning the Joker in TDK is going to be or is pretty damn close to being that.

Caine doesn't come off as the kind of guy that would sit down and watch cartoons.

Not saying that to put B:TAS down, but many older people still 'look down' on cartoons. Therefore, he never saw Hammil's Joker and probably doesn't know of it.

What we do hear is that Ledger is psychotic and scary- that describes Hammil.

Whether or not it's as good as Hammil was NOT the point of the quote or interview- it was to talk about the difference between this Joker and the Joker known to the vast MAJORITY of the audience- Nicholson. And yeah, more people have seen Batman 89' than B:TAS.... if Hammil is mentioned fanboys would get it, general audience would be itching their heads confused as hell.

I didn't know any of those cartoons featured a live action Joker.

Hammil did a decent vocal performance. But thats all it was, a vocal performance. That is totally different to playing the role live action. To get an idea of how embarrasing Hamill would be if he was to play the joker on screen, you just have to see his performance as the trickster in The Flash tv show.

Actually, watch the BTAS special features. Hamill was the only performer who stood to energize his performance. They recorded him on video moving his arms and his facial features and such and implimented them into the cartoon to add more of his likeness.

Not lying it's all on the special features.

Sounds pretty enthusiastic. Very curious to see what kind of performance Heath brings to the role.

I got to say, any Oscar talk just comes off as stupid at this point. The movie is still filming, chill the hell out and not be so damn eager. It's that kind of unrealistic expectations that leave people incredibly disappointed later on.

I wonder if someone cracked this joke yet

Why Ledgers Alfred?

Ledgers frighten me. It's time enemies share my dread.

you know guys, Caine didn't say anything about awards or Oscars.. that was all just added in by the writer of the article.

Most oscar talk is by the fans myself included. Most grounded people here realize that happening is very rare but it does have the potential to happen. It is just fan talk nothing more

I haven't read one bad thing about Heath's portrayal so far. I wanna see him in action, damn it!

I think what will make his (hopefully brilliant) performance even more brilliant is the fact that so many people thought picking a Hollywood, mainstream pretty boy to play an iconic and psychotic supervillian in The Joker was a horrible choice.

You know the way Bales batman introduced himself with the exact first line as Keatons:"Im batman".

Well, I think it would be so cool if ledger did his version of "wait til they get a load of me". I'm certain that there will be some subtle reference to jacks performance. There should be. Just out of respect.

Michael caine forgot his lines? then you know ledger is going to be great

Damn straight. Just imagine it; Heath ledger entering the room laughing and screaming looking like a psycho and Caine stumbling, utterly shocked and gasping trying to remember his lines. Ledger must have thought: Ooh ****, I'm good. :D

I know that actors working together are supposed to say nice things about each other, but that´s what everyone who´s seen Heath perform says, including people who went "extra-officially" to the set area. I don´t wanna make a comparison, I think Nicholson nailed the approach to Joker he was supposed to perform, and I think it´s the best idea that Heath into a different direction.

And I won´t say another word about the frikking "perma-white" argument till I see how it works in the movie.

nicholson did a great job as his "goth" joker that burton wanted.
Now people lets say it together
Burton-GOTHIC
Nolan- REALISM

meeeh. i just dont want to expect to much. i expect a lot from TDK,noland and of course heath. but forgeting hes lines? the best performance? oscar?

it looks like caine is going over the line with this. caine is a good and serious actor. i dont get why dont he wants that heaths peformance speaks for himself?

This is great news, especially coming from some one as superb as Michael Caine, I mean he had a TV show about how to be a better actor, and he is the man, if some one made him forget his lines, thats awesome.

And Tempest I completely disagree with your statements and a lot of people's statements on Mark Hamil's Joker. To me he's first and foremost created for kids for the most part, and just because he giggles a lot does not make some one a psycho. I mean with a cartoon you can't get the human feel for something, that feeling you get when you see some one's eyes or expressions.

That and Hamil's Joker is just too eccentric, to "funny" though he does terrible things in the TAS which I have seen all of them, it's just he's not that scary. Just because he laughs creepy does not mean he's the ultimate Joker. So I just hate when people pull comparisions to Mark's Joker and Heaths. Hamil will never be able to achieve a great character like Heath has the chance to.

Being not a cartoon, Heath can pull people into the movie with real substance, and real human expression, and I have a feeling this will be the best interpertation of a truly demented anti-Christ of a Joker we have ever seen.
