The Dark Knight Rises Can it be topped?

Can it be topped?

  • Yes-I trust Nolan and company will bring the goods.

  • No-TDK is the ultimate high and can’t be topped.

I hope so. I absolutely hated Under the Red Hood.

I did too. I couldn't make it past the 30 minute mark. But my disdain for it has more to do with the animation than the actual storyline, I must admit...

I can't accept Judd Winick as a comic book writer. Cause he was on the stupid Real World the first season I ever watched with any kind of regularity. I can't for the life of me connect him with a Batman story I'd like and that's not likely to change. doesn't fit the pantheon of writers and artists...O'neil, Neal Adams, Marshall Rogers, Mike w. Barr, frank miller, Alan Moore Brian Bolland, Chuck Dixon, Judd Winick from the real world(???) mmmm.

well, we are off topic again....

Boom, are you serious?:wow:

I too loved every moment of it. I want them to make a new series in that style.
I'm completely serious. I absolutely hated it. Never got into the animation style, I thought the writing was atrocious, and the voice acting subpar. And for a guy driven by hatred, revenge, and betrayal - the Red Hood sure was a cocky, quip-machine. Makes jokes the entire film, and then I'm suppose to take him seriously in the end. No can do.

Oh, and:

"It's called AMAZ-O."

Judd Winnick was in the real world? Dayum.

Anyway, I haved mixed feelings about The Red Hood as I think bringing Jason Todd back from the dead is blasphemious as all hell.

While you guys present very good points, I didn't have as big problems with these elements because they just worked in animation. Now had this same film been live action, it could have been absolutely disastrous but b/c it is such a different medium you can get away with things like bring Todd back to life and telling jokes. Mostly I just love the dark tone of it, like Joker lighting all of the people up in the truck. What do you guys think of mask of the phantasm and Return of the joker?

While I don't know or read much about BM, I think that, for his first animated (as in, we see him move) outing, his portrayal was ridiculous.

I liked UTRH a lot, but it wasn't without it's issues. For one thing, the identity of The Red Hood was pretty obvious from the start.

Some of the best animated movies ever. And Mask of The Phantasm is a runner for the title of best Batman movie, in my opinion. It's incredibly compelling. Return of The Joker brought the entire BTAS series full circle and was damn excellent. In regards to Bat-animation, they haven't been topped.

Agreed, agreed and agreed. One gripe, though. The ridiculous final battle between Terry and the Joker. It was borderline a joke.

Hmrm. Elaborate?

I liked the idea of Terry pissing off the Joker by calling him pathetic and stuff, but the writing, the way it was executed was very bad, imo. Add to that the damn dog and it almost got ruined for me. Almost.

Come to think of it, I didn't like the fact that Tim Drake was literally transforming into the Joker.

double the fun

I do think it diminishes The Joker a little bit, but apart from that, I never really had a problem with it, and certainly was a different take on battling the bad guy. I don't recall what Ace did, did he bite Tim or something? :hehe:

As far as the transformation goes, I think it worked, and was quite creepy...

No, no, the idea was fine, the execution was what turned me off.

Ye olde "biting the bad guy at the right time and later the bad guy smacks the dog to show how evol he is" thing.

But... Tim was a short and chubby middle-aged man who transformed (literally!!!) into a thin and tall 30 year old guy...

The transformation was the only hokey thing for me, but they just needed a way to bring back Joker. I use to think "Joker could just be alive in hiding" but then that would mean Joker is 80 years old like Batman and no one really wants to see an 80 yo Joker lol. The only other things they could have done was say that Joker was cloned or cryo-frozen by Freeze's technology. But that goes back to the same ret-con hokeyness of having Jason Todd put in the pitt and brought back to life.

Haha, you're right about that. Guess it never bothered me since it was animation :woot: But you have a point.

Again, don't get me wrong, the movie was ace (no pun intended), I just wish they'd kept those 2 elements out. MotP is near perfect, as Boom said. I watched them back to back with my friends and it was a great Batathon.

I also have a soft spot for Subzero. I was quite the Mr. Freeze fan as a kid.

I loved the TAS Mr. Freeze. Some of my favorite BTAS episodes revolve around him. As for Sub-Zero....I liked it quite a bit, just didn't love it. Can't quite put my finger on why, though...
