The Dark Knight Rises Can it be topped?

Can it be topped?

  • Yes-I trust Nolan and company will bring the goods.

  • No-TDK is the ultimate high and can’t be topped.

I loved the TAS Mr. Freeze. Some of my favorite BTAS episodes revolve around him. As for Sub-Zero....I liked it quite a bit, just didn't love it. Can't quite put my finger on why, though...

Agreed on everything. The story just wasn't... big enough. It wasn't an important story in Batman's arc, unlike MotP and RotJ. It was like an elongated BTAS episode. A good one, too.

I think you hit the nail on the head on why it's not as memorable as MOTP or ROTJ. It certainly wasn't bad, but I remember just not caring for it as much as I would have liked to. BTW, didn't they introduce some "CG" on this one? I think that was rather hokey. I think that's one of the things that put me off the movie. They also did that on some JLU episodes and I thought it was just wrong.

I'm not 100% sure, but even MotP had "CG" in the opening credits (not in the movie, though). Every BTAS movie had CG in some capacity.

Yup, but animating the opening credits in MOTP worked fine. I'm talking about CGing the Batwing or something like that, while everytihng else looks completely different. It just stands out, and not in a good way.

IMO it's not likely that Nolan can top TDK. However I have to admit that re-watching "Batman Begins" for the first time in a long while made me realize some things about TDK. I think it's pretty amazing that both films are so incredibly different in tone. In fact, the only thing I can compare the major contrast to is Star Wars to Empire strikes back. Same characters but completely different circumstances and a darker, somber and richer story. What I found after watching BB again was that it was a really entertaining and satisfying movie. I agree that some of the dialogue was a bit on the cheesy side and that Rachel was a badly written character but overall it's a great flick. It concentrated on Bruce and it was very well done. Nolan is good at filling in all the details. I loved the subtle moments like Gordon comforting young Bruce, the discovery of the bat-cave and so on.

As far as the third I am really curious to see if Nolan can again seperate the new film from the previous two making it have it's own tone. I believe TDK will always remain the best of the trilogy but that doesen't mean Nolan can't make a solid and satisfying ending.

I'm sorry, but I've gotta ask. What dialoque in BB was cheasy???

Oh lawd...you're about to open a can of worms man.

Batman blasts a hole in Arkham wall
"excuse me"

Gordon/Batman exchange outside said Arkham wall
"I gotta get her the antidote before it becomes permanent"
"I'll get my car."
"I brought mine"
"Yours?" "I gotta get me one of those"

Batman chase

1st set of Police guys

"Uhh..he's driving in uhhh...Black...Tank" with second guy doing his best goofball face

Another Police guy (who conveniently teleports from the above roof where he looked directly at the Tumbler, to having amnesia now on the street)

"At least tell me what it looks like?"
Tumbler speeds by
"Uhh..never mind."

Gordon parked in front of Elevated Train's Pillars

Jamaican dude
"Nice ride."

Gordon succeeds at said Pillars

"Yes!!!" (Screaming like a school girl)

And let's not even get into the "IT'S GONNA BLOW!!" guy + coworker, lol

"Nice coat."
"FearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFearFear."
John Madden talking about the water blowing.
Scarecrow: [After having gassed Batman with fear toxin] Ah, having trouble? Take a seat. Have a drink. [Splashes gasoline on Batman] You look like a man who takes himself too seriously. You want my opinion? You need to lighten up. [Lights Batman on fire]

I know we're missing something :woot:

Oh yeah

Batman/Gordon exchange
"I'm gonna stop them from loading that train, but I may need your help."
"What do you need?"
[holds up the Bat remote] "Can you drive stick?"

Agreed...Lots of fun/cheese in BB, altough most worked for me. To be fair though, I think TDK's **Joker goons intercept Helicopter** "That's not good" **Helicopter crashes and burns** "OK THAT'S NOT GOOD!" is worse than any of those....

Here's some more:

Homeless guy: You shoulda tipped better!
Bruce talking about the tumbler: Does it come in black?
"Nice car." "You should see my other one."

Yeah, that SWAT guy was terrible. His commentary totally took me out of the movie and was just as bad as the guy talking about the water blowing in Begins. Hell, he might even be worse.

Wow.

When you see it written out, it really is cornball to the max .

Man, BB sure is filled with those. We could have a drinking game. Everytime a character spouts a one liner, have at it.

Up until he actually gets in costume, that would be pretty pedestrian. After that, everybody's gonna be hammered lol

No matter how many corny lines everyone claims BB has, it will always have an irreplaceable spot in my heart.

I really don't notice the lines that much when I'm actually watching the movie. Guess they just don't bother me as much as they do some people. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the guy who keeps saying, "It's gonna blow!" ...we heard you the first time, guy.

And that's CHEASY???.. Hmm, ok.

Joker is the greatest Batman villain. And short of Daniel Day Lewis, Bogart or Marlin Brando Heath Ledger isn't really to be f***ed with. This movie will be decent, but it won't be anywhere near TDK. I mean. Inception was decent at best.

Any movie can be topped.
It happens all the time.

Whether it's gross dollars, better script, better acting, better cast, etc.

I thought BB was great and didn't know if it could be topped.
Then, I thought TDK was even better in a lot of ways (than BB)... I liked the villains better (Joker and Two Face), I loved the script, the entire cast (except for MG as Rachael), etc.

I think TDKR can top TDK with the right story, added cast and/or villains, etc.

Tom Hardy is a step in the right direction.
Who knows maybe Daniel Day Lewis or Viggo Mortensen will be added.
Marion Cottilard or Rachel Weisz would also be totally awesome.

Anything is possible.

Well, there are some being mentioned by others that did not bother me in the slightest and I would not even consider them attempts at humour but we all pick up different things I guess. The lines that made me cringe were..

"Nice ride."
"Can you drive stick?"
"At least tell me what it looks like....nevermind."
"I gotta get me one of those."
"It's a black....tank."

I'm sure I'm leaving some out but the topper has to be...

"Nice coat."

TDK had it's moments too. The panic room couple really sucked IMO and was a total fail at comedy. Then there was the swat guy.

"That's what I'm talking about air cav."
"That is NOT good"
The guy picking his teeth.
The stupid kids shooting at cars.

Those type of characters DO NOT work for me. Then again a-lot of the comedy in both movies do actually work. So I suppose it's nitpicking but BB seemed to have a-lot more than TDK. At least to me.

I just noticed a-lot of those lines were already discussed. Sorry if I repeated anything.

Also, The Scarecrow lines about "You need to lighten up" and everything have been mentioned by others saying it's cheesy but that part has never bothered me in the slightest. The character of the Scarecrow is so beautifully played and convincingly scary that those lines just work for me. He's in control and cocky relishing in his taking Batman down so he's saying some over the top villian crap. Works for me and actually one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
