A modern director? check

A modern look for the lead actor? check

Let's consider what has been done with Batman Begins and the formula that helped make it work, and the youthful (though not too young imo) appearance of Henry Cavill.

I think this could very well add up to us actually seeing the start of Superman's career in a modern film.

Is it a stretch to jump to this conclusion?

I feel this casting choice certainly leans you out of starting the first film with the "experienced" hero.

*peaks out from behind the fort* i THINK it's safe...

...especially if the reports of Lois not playing an essential role are accurate.

I'd like to see a new take on it. I mean it has been decades since we saw one on screen.

I just don't want them to spend too much time on an origin story...I want PLENTY of Superman and lot of ass kicking

We have waited plenty long for a new franchise. I don't count SR as it was a cross breeding attempt by Singer to merge with Donner. It was like Singer was the scientist, Donner the fly, and Superman Returns the giant monster secreting onto the screen.

Again nothing against Routh for the record, he was the bright spot of a poor conception.

The thing that I hope is no longer part of Superman films is the dainty lil music played in the background. The Donner-Lester films had it, and so did Superman Returns. It's corny and too lighthearted for a film that has lives at stake so often. I don't mean the Superman theme music, I mean the filler.

This is a pretty predictable fan response. In my time at the Hype, I've come to expect many fanboys to want at least one of these three things:

1) Spend as little time on the characters' origins as possible
2) Don't bother with any sort of love interest. Vaginas are evil!
3) Spend as little time with the "secret identity" as possible, and max out the amount of time we see with the character in costume

If someone actually made a superhero movie that tried to meet all three of those demands, I can pretty much guarantee you that it would be crap. In fact, I'd be surprised if it hasn't been done already...

I think I'm about 1 of 15 (if there were even that many...I know of at least 2) people who loved Superman Returns. Superman loves Lois...so bring on the love story...vaginas are awesome! I didn't mean...TONS of Superman. I want it to be evenly distributed time for the both. But not too much of an origin story where you only get about 15 to 20 minutes of Superman out of a 2 hour to 2 and a half hour film. It needs plenty of action...sense that seems to be one of the main things people complained about in Superman Returns.

I wanna see more Superman arse kicking too. It has never really been shown on film how powerful he really is.

Now I'm happy for them to spend 45 mins without him in Metropolis before he's Superman. Birthright managed to show you the Krypton stuff without it taking over a huge amount of the material. Infact it was incorporated into the story and it worked. Here's how I see the film possibly panning out.

- Sent from Krypton to earth i.e. how it was done in Birthright (5 mins if that)
- Clark in Africa (30-35 mins)
- Clark in Smallville (15-20 mins)
- Clark in Metropolis/Superman (rest of the film)

I think we're looking at a maximum an hour where he's not Superman.

As long as we have the necessary characters needed for a Superman film, then I'm game as well.

A lot of the filler is crap...agreed. The Superman march/theme/whatever you want to call it, I feel, is a must for me. Some people say it's dated...well UPdate it a bit like John Ottman did. His version sounded just as amazing!

That would be ideal. It follows a similar structure as BB, which would be perfect to me.

Superman lifting an entire island and letting it drift into outer space wasn't powerful enough? I think you meant there has been a film to show Superman cutting loose on a villain with a similar power-level as him.

I think Superman has been portaryed closer to his comic book power-level than any other superhero. No superhero is shown to be as powerful in their films as they are in the comics (mostly because of budgets)...here's a list

1) Ghost Rider
2) Iron Man
3) Hulk
4) Human Torch
5) Colossus
6) Storm
7) Ice Man
8) Cyclops
9) Even Batman isn't shown to be as formidable in combat as he is the comics

Origin story for a new generation please. Superman's first flight. Superman's first meeting with Lois. You just can't skip these crucial moments. I would like to see Clark doing heroic things out of costume for the first half of the film and suiting up somewhere are the midway point.

Birthright-origin, please. From there on they can pretty much do what they want, but I want something completely fresh. It doesnt have to be 100% canon. And just disregard all other live-action versions of the character alltogether.

I'll probably be wrong it sounds too perfect :D

No, it sounds good and we know Nolan is producing so he might want to use a structure proven successful already. It's actually these things that Nolan would have more input on, and directing the movie itself will be Zack Snyder's field. Though, I'm sure Snyder is in on this too if they're running with it.

Well if I am right with my structure then I'll be doing a dance like this:

So nice to see "Birthright" finally getting some love. It is by far my favorite comic take on the Superman origin and have long wanted Warners to base a rebooted Superman franchise with it as the basis.

In fact, many years ago, I attempted to "adapt" Birthright into a potential series finale for Smallville: http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=170208&page=4

Unfortunately, I gave up after writing three acts!

I'm sure 'Superman Begins' is broadly what WB have in mind. If it successfully rejuvinates the franchise as much as Nolan's film did for batman they'll be very happy.

The difference, of course, is that a new Superman movie needs to lighten up, not get more serious as batman did post Schumacher.

I don't agree...he's already too light. I wanna see him lose his temper like he does so many times in the comic. Or like when Brainiac took control of his mind he beat Batman to a bloody mess

You tell those people that John Williams' Superman March is timeless.

It's not really what I was hoping for, but the article about Lois not being a main character forces me to think it focuses on Clark BEFORE Metropolis. So yeah, I think its safe to say its a superman begins type story.
Thats subject to change with further news tho.

When I say 'lighten up' I'm just stating the obvious - we don't want a repeat of the incredibly stoic SR vibe. This new Superman should have a lot of heart but, dammit, it should also be a lot of fun. Serious fun, perhaps, but fun nonetheless. That's not an especially radical suggestion.
