Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Agreed. I'll just be surprised if he remains the sole writer.

I think they (Marvel) will go for a screenwriter of color for BP. That person though may also be someone who doubles as a director like Joss Whedon and James Gunn. Ava DuVernay, Amma Asante and Ryan Coogler fit the bill. Not sure DuVernay or Asante would be interested in either BP or Captain Marvel. Coogler would be an interesting choice for BP.

I have a darkhorse candidate for possible BP director though if Marvel wants the screenwriters/director to be separate (ie the Russos directing with Markus and McFeeley as writers). It all depends on how this darkhorse candidate does though in his directorial debut. Having said that though, I would not be at all surprised if it's F. Gary Gray.

F. Gary Gray wouldn't be a bad choice, imo. But who's your dark horse?

Don Cheadle if the Miles Davis biopic he did ever sees the light of day and does well. He already knows the MCU quite well.

Ah yes, I'm curious about that one as well.

I would just love to see Ava devurney direct this. Her cinematography and pathos in Selma would make this an amazing film for her and she's too good to waste

Ava seems to be one of those directors not content with just directing, so she would have to be involved with the script. She re-wrote 90% of the Selma script but it was uncredited.

Great to hear about Nicole Perlman and Meg lefauve, cool choices, guardians of the Galaxy was amazing and in and Inside out looks really good. Can't wait to see what they do with captain marvel

That's wonderful, just like joss Whedon then!

I heard that kelly Sue Deconnick pushed for involvement in the script. Is that true?

The Carol Corps fanbase will grow and become more popular, which will be amazing and expands the fanbase to many countries around the world.

Well, it's not an MCU movie without the Black Sidekick, so expect Carol's to be:

It will be very disappointing if Monica is not in this one, but I would not be surprised if she was left out. I don't know how much flack Marvel would get if both Monica and Misty Knight are absent from the MCU.

Marvel puts both Monica in this and Misty in Iron Fist and every known black actress between the ages of 25-45 not named Rosario Dawson and Zoe Saldana will be linked to both parts. It opens the playing field for names like Meagan Good, Tessa Thompson, Nicole Beharie, Paula Patton, Taraji P. Henson, Yaya DeCosta, Lupita Nyong'o etc to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Do you guys think Chewie would be in her movies? I started reading Captain Marvel's comics with Kelly Sue Deconnick's second relaunch, and I think her cat gives her an extra humorous and relatable spark that could be especially popular on the internet. Or it could be stupid. :p

If there's no Chewie, I will riot! :argh:

Seriously though, I don't see why not. Plenty of protagonists in movies have pets they talk to from time to time. I don't see the difference between that and Tony Stark talking to that "Dummy" robot all the time in the IM movies.

Haha that would be a fun use of Chewie. It's that kind of odd humour that made Guardians so popular, it appeals to the internets, and it's a cute nod to Star Wars. Would Chewie drive the story like how it does in the comics?

Cap has Bucky/Falcon as his sidekick, Tony kinda has Rhodey, Carol can have Chewie as hers. :o

I would love to see chewie! Marvel is owned by Disney who owns Star Wars and probably would love the cross promotion so they could definitely do it.

Plus it would give the film more of the comedic moments marvel loves so much.

Plus I'm still annoyed that Claire hated cats in daredevil :cmad:

Jessica Drew is Carol's bestie, so I would expect Jessica to be in the film. I don't believe in this rule that a white character needs to have a black sidekick.

I don't see why they couldn't use both Jess AND Monica in this movie, honestly. Jess can still be her bestie from the start, and Monica could serve some other role. For example, she could just be one of the "enhanced" people Carol found out about on SHIELD's index with cosmic energy projection abilities similar to hers who didn't want to join the Avengers, was happy with her job on the Harbor Patrol and just wanted to be left alone after the Superhero Registration debacle. Carol could then seek her out for help with learning to control that aspect of her powers. Monica taking somewhat of a mentor type of role could be a sort of nod to her being Captain Marvel before Carol in the comics. And since they're both soldiers in a way, they'd forge a bond, and Monica could help Carol and Jess out in the climax. Or something totally different, whatever. The point is, Monica doesn't necessarily have to replace Jess as Carol's BFF in order to fit into this movie.

I don't know. I honestly think Mar-Vell would fill that role as being Carol's guide and mentor. He would make a better choice imo as he provides Carol that connection to the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. Who else better to explain Kree superpowers than a Kree?

I don't like the idea of Carol being helped out in the climax by other superheroes. Inserting Jess or Monica in the movie would be fine, but it should be before they had powers. Iron Man 1 for example had Rhodes, but no War Machine. The hero should be able to stand on their own.

I'm really curious as to how they'll handle Mar-Vell. On the one hand, obviously in the comics, he was still around as Captain Marvel long after Carol got powers. On the other, Marvel's making a Captain Marvel movie about Carol Danvers, so presumably Mar-Vell's gotta leave the picture pretty quickly for her to be THE Captain Marvel. Not sure how long he'd be around to help her with her powers. Regardless, that was just a random example. My point was that Monica could be in the movie without having to replace Jess as her best friend.

As for her getting help at the end, I'm just referring to the kind of help most of the heroes have gotten in their climaxes, Steve getting the help from Peggy, Col. Phillips and the troops, Tony getting help from Pepper and Coulson/SHIELD (and even in small part from Rhodey), etc. The hero doesn't usually stand ENTIRELY alone in the final action sequence, just when they get to the main baddie. Obviously Carol would be the one doing the heavy-lifting (literally and figuratively, lol).

This is actually a weird catch-22 type situation caused by Captain Marvel being sandwiched between the two Infinity Wars movies.

On one hand, I would love for Captain Marvel to be one of the central characters in IW1 along with Dr. Strange and T'Challa. But on the other, I kinda agree with AndrewGilkison in that I want a full fledged, weighty origin story explored in her solo. I just love her origin story and spending about half her movie on said origin story would just be lovely. Especially since pre-powers Carol is an ass-kicker (literally and figuratively) in her own right. I disagree that she has to be an incidental/side-character in her own origin story... while this might be true on the face of things, it's the equivalent of saying that the radioactive spider is the main character in Spider-Man's origin story.

There doesn't seem to be an elegant solution I can think of... and not for lack of effort. Hopefully, the Marvel masterminds can give us some compelling angle that hasn't occurred to me yet.
