Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

As weird as that will sound, it probably still will be. Particularly when there are still some DC fans who think of SHAZAM as Captain Marvel.

There is only one Captain Marvel and her name is Carol Danvers. What DC fans think is of little consequence. This movie is going to be viewed by the general audience, most of whom have not even heard of a Captain Marvel.

Most people may view her as Marvel's most important, most powerful hero since she has "Marvel" in the name. Back when I was first introduced to the character as Ms. Marvel, I thought she was like the cheerleader of Marvel Comics. Captain Marvel was a good name change.

They branded the first Avengers to differentiate it for the elders who might have confused it with the 60's TV series. Ant-Man and Guardians they did it because both were relatively unknown properties that would benefit from the brand boost, particularly GoTG. I also wonder if the branding of these films is something they picked up from Disney and Pixar. Most likely.

If they get CM right it has a great shot at being biggest solo debut in the MCU's brief history, even bigger then Doctor Strange and Black Panther.

I'm wondering if the Kree is heavily involved in this film which is in between IW films. Is it possible that something like Captain Mar-Vell and the Kree starting out as servants to Thanos? Maybe he knows of the Earths heroes at this point(as many of the people he has hired to retrieve gems have been stopped by Earths and Spaces heroes). But then Mar-Vell meets Carol has a change of mind goes against Thnaos, etc etc, Thanos tries to kill Carol but Mar-Vell saves her by giving her his DNA or something which also gives her powers.

Then from there in IW2 we have her ready to fight alongside the Avengers.

I'd rather Carol end up doing something heroic as opposed to getting saved hat results in her getting powers. I think Marvel would most likely deviate from her origin story somewhat.

That's not true even from a Marvel perspective. Captain Mar-Vell and Monica Rambeau are both examples to the contrary.

Mar-Vell is dead and Monica isn't Captain Marvel anymore. See? Only one Captain Marvel.

And Steve Rogers is an old man. Doesn't mean there wouldn't be confusion since not everyone is currently up to date with the comics (particularly those who still think Captain Marvel is a DC character).

With how AOS is building up with InHumans and how big a part the Kree are in that - I can't help but wonder if the show will get another visit from the Kree in the future and have her be part of that storyline?

After the first weekend of release there will be no more confusion as to who Captain Marvel is. :yay: Until then you'll still get some who think Billy Batson before Carol. This is where the 2019 Shazam film will also help. We'll be hearing nothing of Captain Marvel in that. Game. Set. Match.

Probably not. Very few of the MCU film actors have actually crossed over into SHIELD so far.

Yeah. As of right now, I don't think very many non-comic fans know who any of the Captain Marvels are. The films will reach a much wider audience and it is those names that will become the standard.

In five years, to most people, Carol Danvers will be Captain Marvel and Billy Batson will be Shazam.

In X-Men: DOFP, Bishop had energy absorption:

It could look something like that, but she doesn't channel her power into a gun and yellow is more her color. She shoots energy blasts straight from her hands, which is unheard of in the MCU. Combine all her powers together and you're going to have a CGI spectacle, one of Marvel's most powerful heroes. She's more of a Thor than an Iron Man, especially with her blond hair and when she goes binary. Now, that will be insane to see that on screen. She could pretty much nuke a whole planet with that much power.

I can't wait to see Carol absolutely wrecking **** in her movie and in Infinity War, knocking villains back like nine pins, launching them in the air. Oh, and with energy absorption, I think it would be cool to see her getting knocked back through a wall, seemingly hurting her, but she absorbed the blast more powerful than before.

I have a feeling she's going to be watered down in the films. Only one has to look at Thor. His feats in the MCU are inferior to what he has done in the comics. Maybe Ragnarok will change that.

I would bet on Marvel not diminishing Carol's powers with this being their first female led solo.

Fanfiction exists for a reason. It fills in the gaps the movies and tv shows will not fill. Given Feige's recent comments on synergy between the movies and tv shows, I have new hope. If not Carol, maybe one of the supporting characters in her movie. Jessica Drew perhaps?

Seriously though, Carol is way overpowered for that show. She would punch bad Inhumans like Lash into orbit, melt Ward and Hydra with energy blasts, and casually ignore the ATCU as they rain gunfire on her for being part alien. Bullets bounce of Carol until she decides to stamp the ground with her fist, taking them all out. The show would be over in five minutes.

If Carol were in the MCU now, she could just go binary and fly through space at ftl speeds and take her back home.

Just to clarify, Captain Marvel shoots energy beam, like Iron Man, but without the armor. Wanda shoots energy blasts or hex bolts, not beams. Really, though, it's energy absorption that sets her apart from the other heroes, and and top of that all her other powers in one package.

Does Thor look watered down here?

He pretty much demolishes the competition and levels a continent. In AOU, FRIDAY said that Thor could crack Sokovia in half with a strike from his hammer. Not Hulk, but Thor. Iron Man was only needed to ensure the city was vaporized. Clearly, when Thor is not holding back, he's as powerful as he needs to be and holds back to protect innocent lives. Could you imagine the loss of life in the Battle of New York had Thor not held back like he didn't hold back fighting Frost Giants? He would have killed more people than the Chitauri. Hell, The World Security Council wouldn't have even needed a nuke.

Given that Carol's movie will most likely take place on Earth and in space, they won't nerf her powers too much. Carol has a lot of, well.. uh space to let loose. That's why binary works so much better in space than on Earth. She wouldn't want to accidentally set Earth's atmosphere on fire.

Pushed back this movie til 2019 - which seriously bums me out.

But at the same time I'm really excited to see the Wasp.

So it's bitter sweet.

Ah that's taken the shine off the Ant-Man and the Wasp news for me. I really don't like this being pushed back, ah well. :(

This film is getting pushed around more often than a skinny guy in a mosh pit, very disappointing. I have a tiny bit of solace with the fact that the Ant-Man sequel is making Wasp a titular female hero, but would much rather see a Captain Marvel movie sooner rather than later.

Gotta hand it to Marvel - they ain't afraid of being nearly completely lip service-y when it comes to prominent female characters.

Seems like maybe they're still trying to figure what to do with Captain Marvel. Bummed but yeah, cant wait to finally see Wasp.

Thor's powers are somewhat inconsistent throughout the films. Though he was an absolute beast in his first film and AoU.
