Yeah, but apparently we needed a 6th Spider-Man movie, so....

Of course they were going to prioritise Spidey over Captain Marvel

It's almost gaurenteed to make $900m+

Well, prioritizing Captain Marvel and Black Panther over Spidey would have been a pretty bold move, but from a purely financial standpoint, yeah... it wouldn't have made much sense.
I can't really blame MS for wanting to alternate guaranteed hits to "riskier" projects... especially because the latter are far less likely to get greenlit without the money and goodwill earned by the former.

With Zendaya as Mary Jane? Not a chance. :o

Yeah, I don't really blame Marvel for that since they didn't have much of a choice if they wanted Spidey back in their toy box. The Ant-Man sequel's a different story, though...

I found it being pushed back twice REALLY annoying. My guess (and hope) is that the second delay was a result of how the movies or timelines will flow. I agree that it's painful waiting for this to be released, but if it wasn't even announced we'd all be sitting around grumbling about how Marvel hasn't made a movie headlined by a woman.

I guess we're a tough lot to please.....I know I am.

On top of Spider-Man, Marvel had to make an Ant-Man sequel. I mean, I thought that was kind of unnecessary, but whatever. I really started having doubts about the film getting made. The casting of Brie Larson was the best Marvel news since they first announced her film. Casting an Oscar-winning actress to the role alleviated my doubts and showed everyone how seriously committed Marvel is to getting this film made.

Anyways, sorry for re-opening that negativity box, but I've been reading Civil War II. It seems as if Marvel is determined ruin Captain Marvel to set her up for her film. How does that even make any sense? I just want Captain Marvel to beat the **** out of Iron Man. Does that make me a bad person?

Oh yeah, make no mistake, I'm glad they've already announced this film. My excitement for this, and just knowing it's on its way, is the main thing keeping my enthusiasm for the MCU alive.

No, I'll admit I enjoyed the issue from back in her Ms. Marvel days when she drunkenly drop-kicked him into a jumbo jet even though it was a low moment for her, but whatever - I like seeing Iron Man get his ass kicked. No matter the context it seems, lol.

To be fair it sounds like the writers (Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve) and Marvel are finding Captain Marvel a bit more of a complicated. We know they want to switch up her origin a bit and they have talked about the pressure of getting the film right.

Here is what Pearlamn said last year.
“We’ve been talking a lot about archetypes and what we want this movie to be about and just how to write a strong female superhero without making it Superman with boobs. … Meg and I are doing a lot of brainstorming and we’ll catch ourselves and say, ‘Wait a minute, what are we saying [here] about women in power?’ Then we have to say, ‘Why are we getting so hung up on that? We should just tell the best story and build the best character.’ And then we have this constant back-and-forth about how to tell a story that is compelling, entertaining, moving, kick-ass, and fun, and also be aware of what those larger implications might be. It’s a lot more complicated than just writing Guardians.”

I just get the vibe they really don't want to rush the movie. They want to get the film right. These days a lot of studios grab a release date and just rush to get a movie made.

In regards to Ant-Man, the film was a success which usually means the studio wants a sequel and they didn't want to wait too long to make it.

That's the thing though. People want a female-led film, and Marvel instead decides to prioritize another sequel. I mean it'll have been a FIVE year gap in-between Thor 2 and Thor 3, so it's not like it's not doable.

Oh gosh, some people are never happy, aren't they. It's Ant-Man & the Wasp. You can call it Wasp & the Ant-Man if it makes you feel better. There you go, you have your female-led movie... sort of. It totally counts! :o

I swear, when the time for the Phase 4 announcement will finally come, I'd better see an A-Force film somewhere on that slate... it's the only way for MS to make up for 10 years of male-led movies.

Which makes sense. The 4Chan rumors might have been fake, but the one about Marvel possibly trying to turn her into one of their new leading heroes wasn't that far off from the truth, imho. The Post-Phase 3 MCU can't survive on just Spider-Man movies.

Thor has a solo movie gap but the character showed up in Avengers AoU.

It easier to wait on introducing a new character than benching characters you have already establish for a half a decade.

I get that Marvel is overdue on a solo female lead movie but people seem to want stuff right now and are upset about waiting.

It sounds like they are taking their time because they want to get it right and at the end of the day isn't that the most important thing. I would rather wait for a awesome movie than have something rushed out because the fans are impatient.

Don't people want the movie to come out and be the best it can be because they took their time getting it right? I've seen a lot of criticism on the DC movie boards from fans complaining about WB rushing their movies.

Captain Marvel was only pushed back four months anyway. Better being pushed back a few months than put on hold for a undetermined amount of time like The Inhumans movie.

I don't think anyone is questioning the logic behind prioritizing Spider-Man and Ant-Man & The Wasp over Captain Marvel. I don't like it but it makes complete sense. One is a complete unknown and the others are the biggest superhero on the planet and a guy who while not as popular, had a hit movie. They're just annoyed about the wait, is all.

That pretty much sums it up for me. It may be that AM/W will be important to setting the stage. Don't know if that's true, but it could be.

Just get CM right and all of my moaning and groaning will go away. It's early yet, but at this point, Marvel seems to be making the right moves. Getting Larson was a coup. The MCU stable of actors is getting really, REALLY strong.

I don't mind waiting, just make this a breakout film and make CM a massive character in the MCU from that point on.

Delay of gratification is overrated. :cwink:

Agree though.....make CM a major, major player going forward. They have most of the pieces in place to do this movie right. Next up is the director. Then we'll have years to grumble about having no news.....or I will..

I like pretty much everything that's being worked on at the moment so it's not really a delay of gratification as I'm being continually gratified lol. She should be a standard bearer for the post Phase 3 MCU too so should become a leader and have a long future.

That's true. I'm greedy and want it all now. I'm totally psyched about DS and then Thor and BP. SM not so much. Prolly because TASM2 left me disappointed and I've seen what seems to be about a billion SM movies. I did, however, like Holland in CW so maybe there's still hope.

I expect I'll love Spidey but because it's not new I don't have the same anticipation as I do for the others. With Thor being about Ragnarok and having a different tone, hopefully more epic, more Asgard, less useless tagalong characters and of course Hulk, it feels new too lol. Nothing can match up to my IW anticipation though, not even Star Wars.

I think they'll knock this out of the park. With Boseman, Larson, Cumberbatch and Holland they have a great line-up of Phase 3 Avengers.

I feel the same way.

A John Hughes Spidey movie sounds cool and I liked Holland in Civil War but I've seen five Spidey movies already so I'm not all that hyped for the movie yet.

I'm hyped for seeing new stuff we have not seen before like Doctor Strange. I've seen every Marvel Studio's movie and I will probably will see all the upcoming ones as well.

Yes not a bad pick among them.

I'd see everything even if I wasn't interested, but I am BLOODY INTERESTED in everything coming out! :woot:

I felt the same way about Spidey in Civil War as I do about the new movie in general: He was great, but totally unecessary

I think the new movie will be good, but will hardly set the world on fire

BP is the one that has me most pumped.
Panther was great in CW, cast is fantastic, director is quite good, and they have a different tone and setting to explore. And it's strange this is my most anticipated new solo, seeing as I never had any particular affection for the character in the comics.

As for Capt. Marvel, she's my favorite character out of the freshman, but Marvel's cautiousness about their approach to the character still has me equally as cautious, despite thinking Larson is a great, if not completely perfect, pick. Add that to Marvel's current mishandling of the character in the books, and I'm just praying the film writers have a better handle on her than the current comic writers **cough**BENDIS**cough** do.

Marvel is being cautious about Black Panther and Captain Marvel but that is because they are super important to them. They really want to get those properties right.

It is actually refreshing to hear the directors and writers say these characters mean a lot and we want to craft a movie that serves these characters well.

oh no, totally, I get that

But there seems to be more confidence in how they're dealing with BP, like everyone involved knows exactly what they're doing

CM, on the other hand, is a bit more "well we're working on getting that tone right" and "well we may need to mess with the origin a little".... I fully believe they'll get there eventually, but right now BP's production has a lot more 'swag' than CM's does

Well that's because BP's production is much further along because it's coming out sooner. Let's not forget this time last year people were panicking because they weren't even sure BP still had a screenwriter, lol.

Black Panther has a director while Captain Marvel doesn't yet.

It is kind of hard for them to solidify a direction without the movies directors input.
