Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 3

I'd bet 175 -200 million. This is a no holds barred statement film. One a long time coming. The first Guardians cost over 200 million, this should really approach it. Or better yet, I HIGHLY doubt Marvel will be afraid to.

With the early Marvel studios movies, like the first Thor film, it really felt like there was an effort to keep costs down, which was a good strategy for them at the time. It meant that the movies didn't need to be mega-hits in order to be very successful financially.

The movie that came out around the same time as Thor was Green Lantern, as I recall, which was much more expensive and basically flopped.

But anyway, I think we are in a different era for Marvel Studios.

This is an important movie for them, the last thing they would want would be for it to feel cheap compared to the rest of their slate.

Didn't Doctor Strange have a budget of 165 million or so?

I can't see it being any less than that, and it could easily be more.

Absolutely, completely different era. The early years were about building up an indie studio and it's brand by not subverting their long term goals with reckless spending. They had a game plan and stuck to it.

Also Ike is out of the picture on the film side, so Feige doesn't have to haggle any longer about budgets. He reports to Alan Horn at Disney, who is all about innovation and pushing boundaries technically.

There is no need for 200 mill. The first Guardians cost 170. Vol 2 cost 200...

The movie is a solo origin in the vein of Dr Strange. 165-175 is more than fine.

And like Civil War did for Black Panther and the new Spidey.

Especially Black Panther. When I was younger I always thought of him as a Batman wannabe but after seeing the character up on the big screen in CW delivering epic lines like "So I ask you, as both warrior and king, how long do you think you can keep your friend safe from me?" I wanted to see more of this guy.

Yes, loved that line. He's one of the most intriguing new heroes and I can't wait for his solo as well as seeing him as part of this team.

It was revealed much later on that the first Guardians cost well over 200. We also don't know what's 'fine' because we don't know what's in the script. I'd imagine they want to make a statement with this film, something that will be well worth the wait for those clamoring for more female rep.. I think the minimum will be 175 m.

Any appearance of Brie Larson in Avengers Infinity War (don't forget the end credits) will been done to create interest for her movie. Like BvS did for Wonder Woman.
I think she will appear briefly in the movie. They need to get her origin out the way as being in the Air Force. I don't think her movie origin can be done like Dr.Strange, where we briefly see him as a doctor.

And show a connection to the Avengers through Rhodey or even Sam.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around about putting her in the Quantum Realm (if that's the plan). I'll be disappointed if it looks like someplace the GotG routinely visits.

I hope its high. She has a potentially much larger and more extravagant power set than a good bunch of the others.

I think Marvel is going to make both BP and CM statement movies and I think both will do very well. BP was awesome in CW. I am SO looking forward to seeing him in his own movie. I don't think there's ANY WAY we won't see Carol (no powers other than being a generally bad ass pilot) in IW. The hype for IW is going to be NUTS and there's no way they miss the opportunity to set the stage for a very important new character. I'll be stunned if I'm wrong. Carol will disappear (supposedly die?) during IW and I wouldn't be surprised to see a credits scene showing where she is and leaving us hanging (cut to more credits).

Marvel has two very, very strong actors for these roles. The have a very impressive crew on board.

Captain Marvel has special effects heavy powers and a significant amount of her movie is confirmed to take place in space so her movie will probably be on the more expensive end of the scale.

I don't think her powers are expensive effects. While she has some other stuff, it's mostly flight and strength, which are powers they use in Supergirl for a TV budget.

Yeah but Supergirl looks like crap.

LOL this. I like the show but it doesn't even come close to being able to do her powers justice. No, that power set being done right looks more like MoS, and that had quite a budget.

I'm looking forward to seeing HISHE take on Captain Marvel when she's sitting down with Superman and Batman in the coffee shop. Lets face it, Superman will not be happy.

Superman (staring at Captain Marvel) "Impressive, you can fly, indestructible, super strong, shoot beams and your outfit is blue, red and yellow. Done with trying to be subtle?"

Captain Marvel: "Your just jealous because my movie made more than yours."

:sly:

The potential world building alone for CM demands a pretty hefty budget.

I definitely see this having a large budget. Supposedly BP is 150-170 million. I figure the same for this.

I was amazed WW was 145 million as months ago there was mention of it being slightly over 100 million.

Watched the Black Panther trailer last night. One reviewer mentions that being a warrior, T'Challa probably found it easy. He's the protector there to stop the bad guys from harming his country. However, being king is much different now. Everything is no longer just black and white but grey and finding out who he can trust in the political arena.

They need to do something like that with Carol. She's an Airforce pilot, a ranking colonel, basically a good person that will get INHUMAN power levels (fly through the sun and punch a moon?). She was not born a demigod like Thor or had training like Doctor Strange. Chances are these powers will be dumped into her lap with no instructions or guidance. How can any of us can keep a level head if we should suddenly gain that much power. That needs to be explored.

I definitely agree that that is the way to go with Carol

I think the relatable situation you described is a good reason to have the script emphasize her military training and background. It would be nice to see her apply the same discipline she she did to her military career to mastering her powers and role as Capatain Marvel.

One thing I liked in Kelly Sue's run was this air speed record she was chasing as a pilot - once she got her powers, she could break it in a heartbeat, but it wasn't the same. She was still determined to break it in a plane, and didn't see her powers as something to make her previous goals/achievements easier - they just add new goals, new things to reach for. I hope to see that side of her in this.

Something like this would be best handled in the second movie. She'll probably won't have time to process what happened to her and how much it's going to shake up her life until after Thanos is defeated. Her military discipline would help and sitting down and talking with the rest of the Avengers for guidance. To highlight her normal life is gone, I can see her just trying to go home only to find an army of reporters waiting for her. They swarm her and she flies away to escape.
