Cate Blanchett is the Mysterious & Powerful Villainess HELA! - Part 1

Maybe, but I'm not sure. It seems more likely to me that they took the conscious decision to try and cast a big name actress as Hela once they decided to give the character a key role in both Ragnarok and IW, if indeed my theory is correct and that's what is happening here. Cate said in an interview that Marvel directly approached her about the role of Hela and it was her kids that convinced her to do it. If Cate had turned the role down, I imagine Marvel may have gone on to approach other A-list actresses. I do recall reading something about how Charlize Theron was under consideration too. I'm eternally grateful to Cate's kids for convincing her to play Hela though, Marvel never could have cast the role better. :woot:

She ended up as absolutely perfect for the role. I actually prefer Cate's Hela to her Galadriel! She has a real edge as a baddie lol. And yes, all of us owe a life debt to her kids.

Was there a lot of re-shoots with Cate Blanchett? There were some scenes for example when she breaks Mjolnir & when she meets Hogun/Asgardian army in which she seemed to look different from shot to shot..

You know, I'm wondering if [BLACKOUT]that effect was put in the trailers as a bit of a misdirect, it lead a lot of people to think she was using the power of the soul stone, maybe that was the point.[/BLACKOUT] Who knows. *shrug*

I'm sorry everyone, I hate to lower the tone but for those that have seen the film, I was just thinking about that scene where Hela is kinda... draped over the throne with her hair loose and talking to Skurge and dear lord... :hmr: Cate looked so ridiculously hot in that scene.

Yeah...my jaw literally dropped and I needed a drink and started eating popcorn furiously that was a very beautiful sight

I would love to see a Hela vs Doc Strange fight on the big screen someday...make mine Marvel!

The Mjolnir destruction scene was definitely reshot, for reasons that the director has already explained, but for some reason they kept the single shot of her destroying Mjolnir and smiling from the original alleyway scene and just superimposed it into the reshot scene which meant that Hela's makeup and hair was slightly different between shots. I don't really understand why they did that, it was the most obvious, poor CGI shot in the whole film and kinda took me out of the scene a little. I didn't notice anything about her scene with Hogun though, that seemed to be consistent from what I can remember, having seen it four times. :cwink:

Hela vs. Doctor Strange would be so freaking epic, two powerful magic users at battle. Seeing Blanchett vs. Cumberbatch would also be like Galadriel vs. Sauron: The Rematch. :woot:

Seeing it today :D

Awesome! Come back and post your thoughts ASAP, dude. :woot:

Hela would eat Doctor Strange for breakfast, that would be a very one sided match.

Especially without Strange having the time stone.

Hela is more of a universe villain than being appropriate for any one hero to face off against.

What exactly was her power in this movie? Manifesting weapons? Because it seems like that's all she did but i doubt that would be enough to take over Asgard.

Don't doubt Hela's capabilities. She is a BEAST and really OP.

She is insanely strong, has massive durability, she is super fast, amazing fighting skills... and you don't really get the sense of how insane the "manifesting weapons" thing is until you see the movie. There are several scenes involving that particular power that just shows how big of a threat she can be.

Not once he started nagging her into submission, which seems to be his true superpower. Resolve... is dead.

Just saw the movie literally an hour ago and yes people are right. Hela seems to transport herself out with the green misty thingie (the same one which she used to come to norway earlier in the movie) before surfur drove the knife through her.

So i do think she is still alive :woot:

I will have to catch that next time. I had no doubt she was alive but I didn't notice her green misty move.

Seeing it tomorrow instead cause cousin bailed out on me in seeing it today. Grr

There was a couple of shots from the first meeting, the one where she appears out of the portal & the shot of her crushing Mjolnir looked different compared to her actual dialog shots. As you say, her hair & makeup looked noticeably out of place.

The same with the Hela vs Hogun & Asgardian army scene, I've only seen it once but it's the same as before, it looked like it was near a complete re-shoot as some of the shots of Hela she looked different to me from shot to shot. Some of the dialog & close up shots that were present in the trailer weren't in the actual movie.

Putting this behind a cut because some of it is spoilery:

- She's virtually a one-woman army who can slaughter hundreds of elite soldiers in one go without even breaking a sweat;
- She's one hell of a combatant who can beat a warrior as strong and skilled as Thor in direct combat, not to mention she has insane levels of endurance;
- She's pretty much invulnerable - she got stabbed right through the chest and blasted with 'the biggest strike of lightning ever' and kept on going like nothing had happened;
- Like you said, she can manifest all kinds of weapons out of thin air, not just weapons either, she also manifested gigantic black spikey things out of the earth at the end when she was battling Surtur;
- She can also magic her headdress out of thin air when she appears to be powering up for battle, her entire outfit seems enchanted in some way because it was just black and silver (and torn) at first, but when she got back to Asgard the silver parts turned green and the outfit 'healed' itself;
- She can seemingly teleport and when she does, she is surrounded by some kind of green magical energy.

Just saw the movie literally an hour ago and yes people are right. Hela seems to transport herself out with the green misty thingie (the same one which she used to come to norway earlier in the movie) before surfur drove the knife through her.

Yes! Quite a few of us here have seen it, I noticed some folks over at reddit saying the same thing too.

Blanchett is a goddess.

Yep.

I saw the film this morning :D I enjoyed it way more than Guardians Vol. 2. And I loved Cate as Hela. :hrt: i hope she'll come back for more:)

Finrir. Oh i hope we see him back too. I love him. He'd make an awesome mount! I'd ride him on his back!

She was awesome in her role. Amazing what a difference an A+ actor/actress makes even with what is essentially a hammy character.

For the life of me I can't remember her musical score. Really wish they had something more ominous.

Can we get a Hela movie? Pretty please?

This one track was featured in one very significant scene of hers and this track is like my second favorite of the hole soundtrack. It's pretty ominous.

After seeing the film, and seeing her pull off intimidating, physical, and sexy she's my choice for the DCEU Catwoman.

So glad you like it, dude! :woot: I'm almost convinced this isn't the last we'll see of Hela, Marvel Studios would have to be fools not to get Cate into another movie if she's willing, and she's repeatedly stated how much of a blast she had making Ragnarok so fingers crossed. :yay:

She definitely had a leitmotif and it was pretty ominous too, there was a piece of music that played repeatedly through her scenes, usually sung by a lone female voice. You can hear it on the soundtrack a few places, but especially in the following two tracks:

Oh god, I would kill for a Hela movie centered around her final days before she was imprisoned, showing how it was done. We could see the Hela vs the Valkyries battle in full, and Tessa Thompson could return as Valkyrie. I know Marvel Studios would likely never do a villain origin movie, but a girl can dream... :oldrazz:

Cate has proved in Ragnarok that women that are over 40 can definitely kick ass and look extremely hot whilst doing it in these kind of movies, let's hope we see more of it in the future. I'd love to see her in a role like Catwoman (and I definitely think she'd pull it off if they were going for an older Selina who is more age appropriate against Affleck), but I'm not sure I'd want her anywhere near the DCEU in it's current incarnation. We'll see after the Snyder era is over though, Aquaman looks very promising.

So Grace Randolph is officially on the 'Hela is going to be in IW' bandwagon:

Good video. I don't agree with absolutely everything that she says (and she misses out a lot of my reasoning for thinking that Hela will be in IW) but I agree overall. :woot:
