Sadly, like many other films, I am betting the dearth of scripts green lit for black leads in such movies doesn't help.

There really doesn't have to be scripts written specifically for black leads. The overwhelming majority of roles in Hollywood can be played by actors of any race or gender, they just choose to not give certain actors opportunities.

You summed it up perfectly. Girls Trip is a recent film that maybe 5 years ago would exclusively be featured by white male actors, but instead has a Black female lineup and is a big hit. I do wonder if the studio might release it overseas. Things are changing, hopefully Hollywood takes note of it.

I'd say he has the talent and charisma to be crowned the next "Denzel Washington", but considering he's 40

Hopefully we see him in some other type of films soon. BP will boost his recognition. Like Idris Elba, there has some Hype for several years, now is the time for him.

His leading roles as Black Panther to James Brown, Jacob King, Jackie Robinson and later this year as Thurgood Marshall including his supporting roles in other films and his TV work are all decidedly different and display a range of talent that makes him distinguishable not just from any other black actor but an actor; period.

I totally agree. It also disregards the accomplishments of say Don Cheadle or Laurence Fishburne or even Chiwetel Ejiofor. Sadly, Black actors are pigeonholed. It's worse for Black actresses. Let's not even get into for Asian American actors/actresses. Hell, the most famous Asian people in America tend to be Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Perhaps Lucy Liu, whose career is bigger than any other Asian-American ever. (maybe Bruce Lee).

I recall Michael B. Jordan saying a few years ago that he wanted a career like Ryan Gosling. Something I admired. Especially as the interviewer clearly wanted to announce him as the "next Denzel".

Chad is quite talented. His wikipedia page lists that he was an aspiring writer/director who just happened into acting. Or maybe I'm wrong.

The hype for Idris is like Huge, yet I can't think of any film of his which was a hit box office wise. He got critical buzz due to the Mandela film and also Beasts of No Nation. I guess Dark Tower was his opportunity, but that kinda flopped.

You're right about Smith. He's like up there with Johnny Depp/Tom Cruise in their number of hits over the decades and incredibly popular with audiences. I wanna also mention Wesley Snipes. Wasn't he kinda popular in the 90s?

Actors like Will, Tom, DiCaprio and Depp became huge during a time where movie stars were treated and seen as rockstars and could open and draw movies. That era has passed now. The era we have now, the one that Idris came up in, box office draws and true stars have all but faded. People like Idris, but unlike the 90s, most people are not going to come out in droves to see a film solely because he is in it. People are pickier with their movies nowadays. Most films that are huge are either sequels or adaptations that have built in audiences or brand recognition. That's what drives most ticket sales nowadays.

You're right. Such an age is gone. I think only the likes of The Rock and DiCaprio can still be assured of opening a big budget film. Even Downey Jr isn't so legit outside of Iron Man (or Sherlock Holmes).

I hope Chadwick gets more film options after this comes out and is a HIT.

I saw an interview with him saying he wanted to try the blockbuster thing so yeah Dark Tower was his attempt at that. Hopefully this won't be his only shot at something like this.

Yeah. Snipes can do it all: drama, action, comedy. Unfortunately the era when he was in his prime was when hollywood typically wouldn't "allow" more than one black leading man at a time per genre (and really things haven't changed that much). Eddie was the king of comedies and action comedies in the 80s going into the 90s. Denzel to this day is hollywood's go to guy for a black lead in a drama. He'll do action too but drama is his main thing. Scripts would have to be passed on by Denzel (then later Denzel and Will Smith) before they would filter "down" to other black male actors. Snipes started doing lots of action flicks IMO because it was a lane that was more open for him as there really wasn't a black Schwarzenegger or Stallone figure and with his martial arts background it was a natural fit. Most of those movies were pretty forgettable outside of the Blade franchise, so hollywood began moving on. Then Will Smith started blowing up and became the new (and biggest ever) black king of action movies and action comedies with a wave of hits which lasted until After Earth just 4 years ago.

Same here. Not that many young Black leading actors that I can think of. Literally all are over 45/50 (Denzel, Will Smith, Don Cheadle, Laurence Fishburne...). Chadwick is 41 and MBJ is 30. Many other Black actors that we can think of that are "young" are pretty much tv stars. Idris Elba being 45 and David Oyelowe is like 40 I think. Quite a dearth.

I don't think I'd have known about Fisher without JL and Boyega obviously saw a big boost from Star wars but at least I'd already seen him in stuff. There must be more guys with potential out there.

Fisher is 30. Contrary to what many teenagers think that's not old, lol. I don't know how much traction he'll get in hollyweird but Jordan at the same age is doing pretty well.

Oh Boyega I totally forgot. Yeah with the likes of Detroit and Star Wars, he can do just about anything. Which explains Pacific Rim. Fisher is a newbie, but hopefully his appearances in the DCEU might help him branch into notable roles.
