Chapter 23 - "How To Stop An Exploding Man" - Discussion Thread 5/21/07

Am I the only one who noticed that Kensei was played by George Tekei?

Yeah that's what I thought as well. Makes me wonder if it is supposed to be the same guy. Does he have the same powers as hiro?

Anyway, I thought the last episode rocked. Sure the fight between Sylar and Peter sucked, as it did in the five years gone episode mainly because both times, there was no fight. But it's a tv show and I wasn't really especting much of one.

and as much as I am saddened that Nathan is probably dead. I think he went out the best way he could.

think i know why peter told claire to shoot him, alot of u guy's are mad and were like whats that gonna do cause you imddiatly tought about the healing ability peter has thanks to claire, but i think he intended her to shoot him in the head.

the bullet would have hit is brain cancelling all his powers or something like that so i hope i right.

I just couldn't overlook this post.

Want a list of the things that sucked about the episode?

1) Security guards not being able to find the three "Minorities abound" family in the Lindermin building after he was killed. That place would of been locked down and had poliece surrounding it in minutes.

Not necessarily, and they got out of there in minutes so there's that.
They didn't find out Linderman got shot until the other guards came in last i recall. In the end I felt there where enough guards for who he is: Some guy with Illegal connections not the President. Not too mention how many ppl in the organization probably where EVACUATED!! :p

2) DL would of died. Fast. None of that walking around and being like "ohh this hurts!" bit. He would of died in Nikki's arm's like it was showing at the end of last episode.

First of all it's TV and second of all this isn't the first time someone is shot on this show and survives especially with ONE bullet.

3) Parkman going to kill Sylar alone. He already shot him with a full clip in one of the first episodes and he survived, or did the writers forget that because they changed so much of what they were gonna do with the show.

So? It doesn't mean he wouldn't try again especially when the man seemed distracted.

4) The little girl going off about how theres someone more scary than Sylar.
That's an opinion. I for one thought it was pretty cool. :)

5) Suresh not getting shot or hurt at all. He should of died. Long ago.
:whatever:
I don't see why since he's been established as an essential character to the show but if that's how you feel it's your problem.

6) Nikki, for NO REASON WHATSOEVER, stopped Sylar from beating Peters head in with a parking meter.

Last I checked she had Superstrength not Superspeed.

7) Clair not being able to shoot Peter, when he obviously would of survived.

Based on recent Sylar experimentations i'd say having your brains blown out or disected isn't good even if you have healing abilities.

8) Peter not being able to fly away when he was about to explode.
Again if he's trying to control himself from exploding i'm sure it's not that easy to access another ability.

9) The Clair/Nathan scene at the end where Peter's just chillin in the back tapping his foot looking at his watch.
....

10) The whole "Sylar got away / was dragged into the sewer!" bit. Should of just had his body disappear and not make any mention of it. He's in the next season as a regular, probably going to go through some "anti-hero" changes, but seriously.

I suppose it sucked for you, I don't see the bad in that.
I'd highly doubt they'd take the route of the anti-hero after everything that character has done. IMO you're making a bad assumption.

11) No big "Peter VS. Sylar fight". It was like 15 seconds, and Peter was getting help from all kinda of people randomly.

That's the only one I'll agree with but none the less i enjoyed "the battle".

I could probably go on if I wanted to. But seriously, NBC screwed the pooch by not airing last weeks and this weeks episodes in 1 2hr season finale. If they did, it would of been MUCH better. There was a lot of action and an "epic" feel to last weeks ep. This one felt more like a "Ah ****, we were only signed on for 23 ep's for the season? Alright, lets just lump everyone together and throw some glaring mis-characterizations out there and hope no one notices because, get this, we'll throw Hiro in Fuduel Japan at the end!"

Yea..... No! I don't see it. This week had more action than last week which only had too moments of action. Sounds like you hyped yourself up and expected to much from a television series. All just my opinion of course. :D

Peter can obviously use more than one power, or he would of been dead by now. Hello being invisible and getting glass throw into the back of his head like 4 episodes ago? I think it's pretty safe to say that Peter and Claire can't die unless they get decapitated or something along those lines.

What's being said is not that he can't use more than one ability (like he's clearly demonstrated throughout the season. :cwink: ) What's being said is that if he can use more than one at the SAME TIME. :)

Oh and a bullet to the head would literally blow your brains out, so unless the heroes came together to find Peters brain pieces...I don't think he would of healed from a bullet.

When Hiro stabbed Sylar and said "Yatta," I seriously had THE biggest geek-out moment of my life. HTSAEM was an amazing episode. I also liked finding out that HRG's real name is Noah, even though I was SURE that he would die because of it.

^Thank God I'm not you, because I loved what we got. :D

Everything tied up perfectly and worked great especially for a TV series. :)

Overall I liked the finale, but there were annoyances.

[1] We've established that death for Peter and Claire isn't permanent. All she had to do was shoot the spot, and take the bullet out later.

[2] It's not inevitable Nathan was going to die. He could have released him at any point up in the air and flown away supersonic.

[3] Sylar has fallen off a building and survived before. Why was the sword wound so fatal to him? And why, having prevented Hiro getting close to him on many a time, did he just stand there and let himself get stabbed?

[4] The Peter / Sylar 'showdown' was a huge let down.

Since Peter was near Nikki/Jessica, perhaps he will become Peter/Nathan. God would THAT be annoying.
I think Nikki/Jessica is only Nikki with superstrength now. Pete also seemed to have absorbed Nikkis strength when he was pounding Sylar.

His falling off the building I always chalked up to telekenisis slowing his fall...plus didn't he land on Peter? Same thing with the bullets from early on...he stopped them, I assumed.

Now why he was able to catch Hiro's blade a couple of episode's back is a mystery to me (and to the writers as well, I think) and like you said why'd he get stabbed this time?

Go shoot someone on the head and tell me if their brain pieces remain in their head.

I believe they both have the ability to regenerate any piece of body except their brain. :)

As for Nathan he served his purpose and his arc is over. IMO there isn't much left for the character to do.

I was hoping for more Peter vs. Sylar as well.

I liked the little girl's introduction of another villain, but hated them keeping Sylar alive because of it. They should've killed Sylar and had the new guy for next season's villain.

Earlier someone asked why is that every single one of Isaac's paintings have come true except for the ones dealing the season finale. Well, I'm thinking that the only painting that didn't come true was the one on the floor and the one of Micah in a burning building. The one of Micah could still very well come true, he could be in a burning building at anytime. Also, maybe the nuclear explosion can't be stopped, maybe they only delayed it. Mama Petrelli could still be scheming up a way to get one to set off in New York.

Anyone else find it kind of odd how Niki just jumps in the "fight". She has no clue to who is good or bad. Yet she just starts swinging. Speaking of which. It would've been better if that swing sent Sylar flying into a nearby building or some ****.

^She watched Sylar send Noah flying, stop Matt's bullets and fire them back at him, and hold Peter in a telekinetic choke. It was quite obvious who the bad guy was.

Uh .. no she doesn't. Niki & the rest of the gang don't come out of the building til after Matt is lying against the wall after being shot back at. She doesn't see anything. As Suresh separates from the group to tend to Matt. She, Molly, DL & Micah go a few yards away. Not once does she glance back to see who is good or bad. After she lays down DL. She just walks over to join the fight. The telekinetic hold could be seen both ways. A hero holding a villain & vise versa.

She could have seen them through the windows, plenty of buildings have large windows around their lobbies.

I've been browsing and I must say i've read some silly posts, u know who u are

I'm just going to contribute this one thing for now

all this talk of peter regenerating
plus all this talk of nuclear fission explosion
throw in this talk of bullet or object or more to the point, brain being really damaged hindering healing powers?

doesn't seem to all fit

he needs a working brain to use his healing power, how does he exploding not throw a wrench into that plan?

I don`t understand how can u guys want more of a fight. This show isn`t a blockbuster movie. The episode had a lot of special effects and in case u didn`t remember, it was the bomb and the characters that were the most important thing, not the fight. If u want a brawl, go watch Matrix Revolutions. The episode was amazing to me because it showed the meaning of being hero more effectively in 30 mins than Superman Returns and Spider-man 3 couldn`t do in 2 and 1/2 hours.

How can u not think Nathan`s speech in the end was amazing and touching? Nathan didn`t care for those people of NY but because Peter with compassion saved the cheerleader, his daughter, then he understood what being a leader and a hero really meant.

Plus Ando mentioning Superman was just great. He could`ve said Batman or Spider-man. No! He mentioned the greatest hero of all time.

Heroes is to me the best show i`ve ever seen on TV and a school of how to treat comic book with respect and knowledge.

Bryan Singer, learn with this!

Thumbs up and thank you, Tim Kring.

Here it comes Volume 2!!

He doesn't need to regenerate, except from the fall. Think about it... did Ted have cancer? Did Ted burn himself everytime he created those energy balls? In the webcomics Ted even explodes, just a lot smaller. He can't be hurt by his own power, so neither can Peter.

I'm sorry but this finale was blue-balling on the level of the Matrix Revolutions. So many contradictions and ridiculous conclusions plagued this episode. Here are the most glaring:

1) It's already been established that you don't need to kill someone to keep them from exploding. Claire accomplished this by knocking Ted out with a drug when he lost control of his power. Keep in mind that this is the same power that Peter has absorbed. Couldn't have Claire done the same thing?

2) Peter mentions to Claire that she is the only one who can get close enough to stop him and yet Nathan walks right up to him.

3) If these guys are really supposed to be "heroes", they suck at their job. Hiro could have finished the job but instead, Sylar lives. Nathan gave up his life needlessly. Claire did absolutely nothing except manage to NOT to be killed. Parkman went after a semi-god with a handgun. Nikki stood around and watched for the most part. Heroes? Hardly. Apparently, with great power comes lots of standing around and doing nothing.

4) An empty NYC? I've walked around NYC (and Kirby Plaza) at all hours of the night and it certainly doesn't look like a ghost town. Are extras that expensive?

5) We're teased with a Peter/Sylar fight in Suresh's apartment. Then we're teased in the future episode. So what happens in the final episode of a 23 episode long story in which we've been following these two characters in their progress and power training? A vader grab, three punches, a parking meter to the face, and sword to the gut. Wha-? I realize that the show is on a budget but a little creativity can go a long way. A telekinetic battle woulda required just a little bit of wire work. Not that much to ask for considering that the entire season was building up to this confrontation.

6) When Candice's projection fades, shouldn't the illusion of how she looks fade as well. She clearly stated to Micah that she was, in reality, a big girl. Even in the voting booth, she makes it pretty clear that the form we see her in isn't her own.

7)How am I supposed to care about Molly's cryptic "scarier than sylar" line when Sylar was fairly easy to to take care of.

8) Maybe it was Sylar's plan all along to let Hiro kill him but couldn't we have seen something a little more believable than a five-step jog to stab Sylar? The guy stops bullets but he can't stop a short Japanese geek from walking up to him with a sword?

9) What purpose did Shaft play? Hey, Peter, you're gonna save the world with love! What's my power? Let's leave that really vague so the lazy writer of the show doesn't have to explain it. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Peter about to blow up NYC when Nathan's "love" saved everybody?

And this is coming from a die-hard fan of the show. I don't think I've ever been this dissappointed in a series finale. This show promised so much only to deliver so little. Looks like the real genious behind this show were the staff writers and Jeph Loeb, not the creator - Kring. I always wondered how a schmaltzy TV writer could create such a great show. And now I get it. Up until now, he let everybody else do the work.

now i know why i coudn't get on the hype yesterday morning the HEROES fans were becoming the crowd scene from SPARTICUS posting about the finale

He did, he told her to shoot him exactly where she pulled the piece of glass out of his head
